Six Kids and 6,000 Miles: #RoadTrip Pics from Arches National Park in Moab, UT

Yesterday we drove from the Rockies to Moab, Utah. Today we’ll stay put as we visit Arches National Park. More than 2,000 natural stone arches fill the park’s landscape, and believe it or not I didn’t take a picture of every one of them, LOL, but it’s safe to say I captured one or two. Here’s a closer look.

Arches National Park in Moab, Utah

IMG_8734

Notice how big those rocks are compared to the cars – if you look carefully you see the road wind ahead and you’ll gain a better idea of just how huge these landforms are. Also of note, if you’re creative you’ll see faces. In the upper right, that almost looks like a critter sitting on the white rock. Just over the green trees there’s a gnome vibe going on.

These are my kids at Arches National Park. The oldest is 16 and the youngest is 4 and after three days in the car they aren’t choking one another. Awesome.

Yet another arch with my kids in the foreground.

IMG_8801

See the elephant? (In the rocks…not a real one. LOL.)

IMG_8851

Tunnel Arch in Arches National Park. (It’s the bigger hole).

IMG_8852

This arch from this angle looks like a heart.

IMG_8872

This is one of my kids standing on what appears to be a sheer rock wall. And it sort of was. O.o

IMG_8881

My eight-year-old found this little lovely. I’d been worried about rattlesnakes all day so I nearly lost it when she nearly stepped on it and backpedaled, at which point all six kids converged on this snake. I hadn’t seen it well enough to know it wasn’t poisonous so I was freaking out until the verdict was in. Fortunately he was relatively harmless, albeit a bit annoyed by the attention as you can see by the flared head (a defense mechanism) and that look in his eyes. (Do you see it? I swear he looks irritated!) He was about four feet long and nicely camouflaged in the desert.

IMG_8898

Another glimpse of the wildly varied formations found in Arches National Park.

IMG_8902

More of the variety found in Arches National Park.

IMG_8908

This is Delicate Arch, the very formation found on Utah’s license plates and the state’s welcome sign, which you saw in yesterday’s pictures. (Link below). If you look closely you’ll see a person standing in the center of the arch, almost precisely on the shadow. That gives you a good idea of the size of the arch and the surrounding formations.

Remember that snow-capped mountain from yesterday’s trip through Utah? Here it is bathed by the sinking sun.

IMG_8984We left Arches National Park under the light of a full moon. After spending another night in Moab, we’ll head west across the desert, so tomorrow here on my blog will bring more pictures from the road. I hope you’ll rejoin me then. :) In the meantime, if you’ve missed a previous post you can catch up here:

Six Kids and 6,000 Miles: #RoadTrip Pics from the Rockies to Moab

I’m sharing pictures from our cross country road trip. Yesterday we ended with a Colorado sunset and today we wake in beautiful Vail. Let’s see where the road leads, shall we?

IMG_8272

Early morning in Vail, Colorado with a stunning view of the Rocky Mountains

IMG_8291

Another breathtaking view of the Rocky Mountains near Vail, CO

IMG_8292

Before the trip is over, we’ll ascend to 11,158 feet and bottom out at 282 feet below sea level. The views at both end of the spectrum are absolutely amazing.

IMG_8301

Morning clouds over the Rocky Mountains near I-70 in Colorado.

IMG_8318

October on the western side of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. This looks like I used a filter on it, but it’s all natural. :)

IMG_8331

I intentionally included vehicles in a lot of my pictures so you can see the massive scale of the landscape. These mountains are unbelievable (especially for us geology geeks, lol).

IMG_8343

This is another photo that almost surreal with the changing colors. Also, that water in the lower right? That’s the mighty Colorado River.

IMG_8352

This was one of my final glimpses back at the snow covered peaks of the Rockies as we headed west toward arid Utah.

IMG_8428

This is I-70 quite literally THROUGH the mountains of western Colorado.

IMG_8454

Here’s another glimpse of the Colorado River. It goes on to do great things. :)

IMG_8485

I love these mountains beside I-70 in western Colorado.

IMG_8491

Western Colorado’s changing landscape.

IMG_8623

I-70 in western Colorado. When you see the road winding ahead, you gain a glimpse of just how massive this landscape is.

IMG_8633

You’re in Colorado looking at the Utah state line. This vast emptiness is prevalent throughout the I-70 corridor. In fact, here you’ll find the longest stretch of interstate in the United States without gas or other services – a whopping 108 miles.

IMG_8668

This curious snow covered mountain was a constant companion once we entered Utah, so it was pretty cool when we found it was quite near our destination.

IMG_8676

The changing rocks throughout Utah are pure artistry.

IMG_8684

Note the green layers in this rock, and also how far beyond this formation the rocky landscape extends. Don’t let the nearby shrubs fool you – most of those boulders you see are bigger than a car.

IMG_8691

Here we are much closer to that snow-covered mountain. We’ve left I-70 and are headed toward Moab, UT.

IMG_8692

Red rock is abundant in Moab. It’s gorgeous, the enormity of it nearly incomprehensible.

IMG_8696

If you look near the center of this picture, you’ll see a road ascending these rocks near Moab, Utah.

IMG_8704We stayed here with this incredible view in every direction. Next up, a visit to Arches National Park right here in beautiful Moab. And in case you missed it, here’s a link to yesterday’s travel photos:

Six Kids and 6,000 Miles: An Epic #RoadTrip to the Desert Southwest

This October my husband and I loaded up the Suburban and packed up our RV travel trailer and hit the road, this time driving cross country to the desert southwest. I’m sharing my favorite pictures on my blog this week, so be sure to visit daily to see some amazing sites! Today we’re on the road headed west.

You just don’t see these like you used to.

IMG_7984

Folks, this is a grainery–one of many–in Kansas. We’re farmers and have seen plenty, but nothing on this scale. The capacity here is unfathomable.

IMG_7996

A broken windmill visible from I-70 in Kansas.

IMG_8071

Wide-open Kansas and the makings of a storm that nearly blew us off the road.

IMG_8086

The approach of a weather front in Kansas. You’re looking west down I-70 and the front is approaching from the north.

IMG_8104

When this front hit us, the digital temperature readout on my vehicle dropped 20 degrees almost instantly. Traffic that had been going 70mph slowed to a crawl as the  midday sky turned black and sudden wind gusts hit us broadside and nearly knocked us off the road. Fortunately it was a short lived event that resulted in…

IMG_8129

Gorgeous rainbow after a freak Kansas storm. It was actually a double rainbow, but the second one didn’t show up in the pictures.

IMG_8133

Another shot of the rainbow with the storm behind it.

Whether you like your ghosts scary or sweet, I have the perfect Halloween read for you! RUBY HILL and HAWTHORNE are both novellas, making them the ideal way to end a perfectly haunting All Hallows’ Eve. Pick one up…if you dare!

Scary….or Sweet?

RUBY HILL (scary!)

One reunion. One ghost. One night that will change everything…

From her earliest memories, Ashley Pearce has been drawn to Ruby Hill Lunatic Asylum, and she’s not the only one. Decades after the abandoned hospital ended its institutional reign of torture and neglect, something lurks in the shadows. Since she’s a paranormal investigator, it’s Ashley’s job to find out what.

Crime scene expert Corbin Malone doesn’t believe in ghosts. A born skeptic, he has no interest in entertaining the hype surrounding the mysterious deaths at Ruby Hill, but he won’t turn his back while more women die. He agrees to an overnight investigation, never expecting his first encounter would be with the woman he pushed away a year ago. But when he discovers Ashley is a target, he learns his greatest fear isn’t living with his own demons, but losing her for good.

$25 #Giveaway: The Sins of a Few by Sarah Ballance (Salem Witch Trials Romance)

Hi, y’all! I have a $25 giveaway out there today thanks to the good folks of Goddess Fish Promotions and I thought you all might like to enter. :) You can do so via Rafflecopter by clicking here.

Here’s more on the book:

The Sins of a Few

Salem, 1692

The moment he steps off the boat and into his hometown of Salem, Nathanial Abbot knows the rumors about Salem are indeed true. For in the two years since he’s left Salem—disowned by his family and seeking a fortune of his own—the town has changed. It is dark with discord and suspicion… and accusations of witchcraft. Now all that remains for him is the woman he’s never forgotten.

But Faith Downing isn’t happy to see Nathanial. In his absence, his younger sisters have ignited the chain of hysteria that resulted in twenty deaths—including Faith’s aunt, to whom Nathanial owed his life. Yet through her acrimony, Faith can’t prevent herself from responding to the man Nathanial has become, handsome and kind. A man who kindles something in her that speaks of sin.

Cover_The Sins of a Few Excerpt

“The accused would not be in need of defense if someone had bothered to put a stop to what your sisters were doing,” she said, her jaw tight. “And if you wish to walk out of here without a limp, take heed now of your opportunity to go.”

“And if I do not?”

She lifted her hand as if she meant to contact him, but he did not allow her the chance. With undue speed, he captured her wrist and pressed her arm, gently but firmly, against the plank wall at her back. “Careful there, little one.”

“Or what? Do you mean to threaten me?”

“Not at all. In truth, my intentions are exactly the opposite.”

Her hazel eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?”

His gaze dropped to her lips. Drank in the sight of her tongue darting to moisten them. Her chest heaved, sending his heart into uncharted territory. Sending him away from her.

He released her arm and took a step back. He had been a breath away from kissing her, and the only thing that promised to be more delicious than those ripe, moist lips was the fury she would no doubt cast his way. But now was not the time, nor was it the place. “Nothing,” he said. “It means nothing.”

Leaving her staring slack-jawed after him, he turned on his heel and left.

#Review: “Christopher’s Diary: Secrets of Foxworth” by VC Andrews

About the Book

Jealousy, tragedy, survival, and revenge—the discovery of Christopher’s diary in the ruins of Foxworth Hall brings new secrets of the Dollanganger family to light and obsesses a new generation. With Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind both now major Lifetime TV events, this first new addition to the Dollanganger story in nearly thirty years is a timely look at the events in the attic—from teenage Christopher’s point of view.

And don’t forget to preorder the follow-up, Christopher’s Diary: Echoes of Dollanganger!

Christopher Dollanganger was fourteen when he and his younger siblings—Cathy and the twins, Cory and Carrie—were locked away in the attic of Foxworth Hall, prisoners of their mother’s greedy inheritance scheme. For three long years he kept hope alive for the sake of the others. But the shocking truth about how their ordeal affected him was always kept hidden—until now.

Seventeen-year-old Kristin Masterwood is thrilled when her father’s construction company is hired to inspect the Foxworth property for a prospective buyer. The once grand Southern mansion still sparks legends and half-truths about the four innocent Dollanganger children, even all these decades later. Foxworth holds a special fascination for Kristin, who was too young when her mother died to learn much about her distant blood tie to the notorious family.

Accompanying her dad to the “forbidden territory,” they find a leather-bound book, its yellowed pages filled with the neat script of Christopher Dollanganger himself. Her father grows increasingly uneasy about her reading it, but as she devours the teen’s story page by page, his shattering account of temptation, heartache, courage, and betrayal overtakes Kristin’s every thought. And soon her obsession with the doomed boy crosses a dangerous line…

My Review

At first glance, and for most of the book, CHRISTOPHER’S DIARY: SECRETS OF FOXWORTH felt like a retelling of FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC. The book makes no secret of this, but present-day Kristin’s story was little more than background noise as I revisited the original telling of FLOWERS I knew and loved so many years ago. Kristin is a distant relative of the Foxworths who lives in the shadow – literally and figuratively – of what happened in that house. Thanks to her father’s protection, she seems to be one of the few people in town not privy to every dirty little secret the walls held. Needless to say, when she finds Christopher’s diary on the property she is quickly pulled into his first hand account of his life, both before and during the time he and his siblings were imprisoned in the Foxworth attic.

As a reader of FLOWERS, I didn’t learn anything about the story I hadn’t before. To that end, I found the watered down version of the original (that is, the text of Christopher’s diary) bland, while for most of the book, Kristin’s story likewise lacked substance. The combination left me in a holding pattern as I waited for something to happen. Fortunately, something finally did. Unfortunately, it was at the nth hour. It wasn’t until the last couple of pages of the book that I found myself truly intrigued, and learning more will of course require that I pick up the next book in the series. Will I? Probably, but I wish I felt more of a pull toward the sequel.

The verdict: If you haven’t read FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC, I’d suggest you grab that one instead. The story deserves the depth found within the pages of its own book. If you have read FLOWERS, you might enjoy this retelling, but if you’re looking for anything scandalous, you won’t find it here. It’s a pleasant and well-written read that neither adds to nor takes away from the Dollanganger saga, and whether because of or in spite of that fact, it’s a volume belongs in the personal library of every FLOWERS fan.

October Reads: AN UNEXPECTED SIN (Salem Witch Trials Romance)

An Unexpected Sin

Colonial Salem

The moment the stranger’s dark eyes meet hers, Anne Scudder’s world is immediately overthrown by chaos. That single flare of desire is immediate, driving away all notions of propriety. Instead, Anne is consumed with sinful thoughts – ones that no unmarried girl should ever have for a man who isn’t her husband…

But Josiah Cromwell is no stranger.

It’s been six years since Josiah stole kisses from Anne, his best friend’s younger sister. Six years since Josiah left after his best friend’s death, burdened by the knowledge that he was responsible for destroying Anne’s family. Now he’s returned to claim the woman he can’t live without. But even as their desire threatens to consume them both – body and soul – the dark workings of suspicion and witchcraft are afoot.

Because in Salem, too much passion can lead a woman to ruin… and condemned to death.

An Unexpected Sin | Excerpt

She raked his hair. Clutched desperately at his back. Found it was she who moved against him, for he had eased his grip in favor of taking fierce hold of her breasts. In the dark and through her clothes, he put his mouth over first one, then the other. Desire toppled her sensibilities until she was left arching her back, every part of her begging to be closer. Begging for the kind of fulfillment she knew in her heart only he could deliver.

Begging until he broke free.

Breathing heavily, he bathed her in the lopsided, boyish grin she had long adored. “Your father will see me to the gallows for this,” he said in his low, husky voice.

Though the logic of his words found her, she wanted not for sensibilities. She wanted Josiah. “My father sleeps upstairs.”

Josiah took a deep breath. “It is not often I wish to be a lesser man,” he said, “but a lesser man has a certain advantage when a beautiful woman comes to him in the dark of the night.”

A beautiful woman. Anne had never imagined such a description could belong to her. “You could never be a lesser man.”

“Rest assured, if you return to my room in the dark of the night, I will be nothing more.”

Though his tone was light, she did not miss its undercurrent. His serious nature made his words all the more thrilling, for they left little doubt as to what he wanted—or how badly he wanted it. She could not keep the smile from her voice as she asked, “Are you saying I need only walk from the room for a minute’s time to make a lesser man of you?”

“I would like to think myself more honorable, but I make no promises in my current state.”

“Perhaps we should test that supposition.”

He grinned and leaned in, kissing her softly. “As much as I ache to know every inch of you,” he said, “it is not my desire to make off with your honor like a thief in the night.”

She splayed her fingers across his warm, bare chest and took a deep breath of courage. “You have long stolen my heart. My honor will not be far behind.”

October Reads: HER WICKED SIN (Salem Witch Trials Romance)

“A thrilling romantic historical that deals with the Salem witch trials in a way that’s never been done before. Amazing!”  - NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken (cover quote)

Her Wicked Sin

SALEM, MA 1692

On a moonless night, he rides into the winter forest on his beast as black as midnight….

Dashing stranger, Henry Dunham, comes to Salem on a mysterious errand, but is thrown from his horse in the dead of night and rescued by the local Puritan midwife, Lydia Colson.

Haunted by her past, Lydia is running from her own dark secrets, avoiding intrusive questions by pretending her dead husband is simply…away. But when she and Henry are caught in a compromising situation, one punishable by Puritan law, he saves her from scandal by claiming to be her errant spouse…and claiming her bed.

Forced to fake a marriage, Lydia and Henry find their passion overwhelming and their vows a little too real. As their lies become truths, a witch hunt closes in on Lydia, threatening not only their burgeoning love, but her life.

Her Wicked Sin | Excerpt

“Willard, you beast.” A round of profanity followed the utterance. Though the stranger’s words were foul, they offered for his equine companion both comfort and reassurance. Their soothing cadence eased the alarm from the horse’s eyes, leading his ears to relax from their pinned state.

Lydia found herself enchanted by the man’s tones and by his obvious affection for the horse.

He shifted in the leaves, still facing away, and he had yet to acknowledge her. She should flee. She had freed him from his quandary, and his voice tinged itself not with pain, but with humor. She would feel  no remorse for moving past, yet her feet did not budge.

If she remained silent, would he not know her there? No, eventually  he would wonder what held the reins aloft. She watched, waiting for that moment. Through the profound darkness, she noticed his hair was a nutty brown and longer than that of a Puritan man, though its richness showed no trace of the powder worn by many wealthy travelers. He was a study of contrasts, this man. For all of his finery, he seemed to shun the ways of society, and his roguish nature appealed to those innermost desires she had thought long lost. Her husband, as he were, had ruined her womanhood.

This stranger, in the most insignificant ways, had roused it.

“Sarah Ballance has done an exceptional job with this release. The story is well built, plot flows effortlessly and the language is true to the era. An exciting read, start to finish! Definitely a must read!” – Joe Breedon via Goodreads

“This was wonderfully written and I just feel in love with the characters and the story.” – Crystal via Goodreads

“I loved and adored this book! Historicals are tricky because I often find that the characters use modern language and have modern opinions and feelings. NOT true here. The author has clearly researched the period and uses language that the people of the time would have used.” - Negar Arvanaghi via Goodreads

“This story is a page turner. There was one particular incident I never saw coming when it happened I was like OMG it can’t be. This is a must read for lovers of historical romance.” - Nadene via Goodreads

“This book was so good! … The relationship between the two characters is sensual and has twists that made me gasp. … I would definitely recommend this book and would read it again in a heartbeat.” - Darcus Murray via Goodreads

“I loved “Her Wicked Sin” from the first page. … I fell in love with her writing and characters. Sarah is able to make you feel as if you are a part of her character by her descriptions of their settings and feelings.”Vicki Lake via Goodreads
