Can she be more than a mistress?
With a tarnished reputation, Mercy Lyndhurst expected to become the Earl of Rochford’s mistress, not his wife. Immediately abandoned by her husband after their wedding, Mercy transformed herself from commoner to countess, vowing to protect the lands and people her husband was forced to leave.
Over the past six years, William has restored the family fortune all the while tortured by his memories of Mercy…and the dark night he killed a man. When a threat draws him home, William learns just how much has changed—including his wife. While the passion still flares between them, he fears he has wounded her too badly to regain her trust. But as the danger grows they must unite to save the estate…and possibly their marriage.
Now enjoy an excerpt:
William stopped beside his horse, staring into the gray hills.
“Back there,” Beck said. “My lord, it was murder.”
His heart squeezed tight. Murder. “He was going to hurt her. You saw it.”
“He was drunk and unarmed but for a piece of glass. You came to the house with a pistol. It will look like revenge. There are limits to what the law will accept, even for a peer.”
William paused, swallowed. “No. There aren’t.”
A part of him wished Beck was right, that someone would punish William for what he had done, that someone would protect this young woman from his misuse. But that part of him was very small and William spoke the truth. That was the problem with being an earl, even a poor one—there was no one to stop him.
The young woman crossed the marshy grass in her thin nightgown—already halfway to translucence in the rain. She faced him with a blankness he recognized in himself. Shock at what had happened. Acceptance of what was to come.
Sweet little Mercy Lyndhurst, and here he was to defile her.
The last time he’d seen her she’d been a waif of a girl. Now she was all woman. And why shouldn’t he take her? He could have her and help her at the same time.
A poor excuse.
He examined her, struggling for detachment. Already the rain was clearing some of the fog from his mind, allowing rays of sanity to peek through. The thought of going home alone to the empty cavern of a house chilled him. He might as well be a stranger in his own lands for all that he knew anyone here.
He was selfish to take her this way, but concern whispered, too.
What would she do here? Jasper may have been a poor excuse for a caretaker, but a young woman with no means could starve in the next cruel winter. She deserved better than him for a rescuer, but he was all she had.
Another excuse. The simple truth was, he couldn’t quite bring himself to leave her here, in a place that reeked of death.
“Did you send the note?” he asked suddenly. He didn’t know where the idea had come from, but he knew the answer even before she nodded.
She’d sent the note, because she knew there was trouble. She’d used code from their childhood, so that he would understand. And that was as good a reason to take her as any—there were very few people he could trust.
Just her, perhaps.

Robyn DeHart on Naughty Barbies and “For Her Spy Only”
Robyn DeHart is here with a glimpse at her new historical romance, FOR HER SPY ONLY, but first she’s giving us a glimpse into her childhood. Alas, this hits home for me because I, too, played with Barbies…and for longer than I’d like to admit. For that matter, I’d probably STILL be playing with them if my best friend’s dad hadn’t mistaken the huge garbage bag full of Barbie stuff she’d toted to my house and back as actual trash. (ERMAGERD). But I digress. Let’s get to the good stuff. Please welcome Robyn!

When I was a little girl, my most favorite thing in the world was Barbies. I loved them. I loved dressing them and fixing their hair. I never had one of those big Barbie houses, no, that was too limiting for me, I needed more space, more options than the doll house would provide. No, I made furniture by stacking paperbacks and covering them with washcloths (perfect sofa!), and I had a great bed and using all the space in my room, they always lived in a sprawling mansion. My friends loved playing with me because I would always create elaborate story lines and sometimes these games would last well into the night. There was always adventure and danger and romance. With lots of kissing.
It was a sad day when I had to put up those Barbies. Much later than all my friends I had tried to keep playing, but somehow the magic had died for me in between elementary and jr. high. I still have all my Barbies, tucked away in my big, red suitcase, and someday they’ll be played with again.
I learned a new way to play Barbies though. A new way to create those adventurous and romantic storylines with lots of kissing. And now I get paid for it. It took me a while to realize that’s what years of Barbie playing was for me, I was cultivating myself as a romance reader and writer, learning the rudimentary steps of story and character creation. Luckily some things have changed. I no longer have to name my Barbies (uh…characters) Toni or Ashleigh. Not that those are bad names, but they don’t really fit into Victorian times. And my heroes, unlike Ken, aren’t plastic everywhere and have more than just a subtle bump.
I think about those times though. Staying up way too late, listening to New Edition’s remake of Earth Angel or Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam’s All Cried Out (yes, I’m dating myself here), and playing Barbies who would dress in their costumes and go to Masquerade parties and dance and laugh and, of course, kiss. I had no idea then that those times were building on something bigger for me, no idea that I was rehearsing for the coolest job on the planet.
I love creating stories. I love coming up with characters that are unique and special in their own way, yet so familiar, you could swear you know them. I love watching these characters hit obstacles and grow and change and become stronger, better people. And I love making them fall in love.
Can you look back into your past and see tells of the adult you were meant to become? And the real question…did you love Barbies as much as I do…uh did?
Teaser from “For Her Spy Only”
“More favors? What have you been doing for so long without me in your life?”
“Yes, well, perhaps our little reunion is merely good timing.” She smoothed her skirts though there was not a wrinkle in sight. “In any case. The aforementioned guardian who wishes to marry me. I believe it might be a deterrent if he thinks I am connected to another man. A man of your station.”
He wasn’t quite believing her words. He’d told her years ago that he wasn’t interested in marrying again. “You want me to marry you?”
She frowned, shook her head. “Of course not. I merely want you to pretend you are going to marry me. At least until he loses interest in me as a prospect.”
“What would this charade entail?” he asked.
“Nothing more than me being able to tell him about our pending nuptials. Perhaps he could meet you, too. You are formidable. I suspect if he saw you, he would lose interest in me rather quickly.”
“Formidable.” He nodded. “And these are your conditions for allowing me access to the maps?”

Amber Lin: Why Does a Pirate Make a Great Hero?
Amber Lin’s sexy pirate historical, Falling for the Pirate, is brand new from Entangled Scandalous and only 99 cents for a limited time. Those of you who haven’t already fled for the buy links are in for a treat, as Amber is visiting today to tell us why pirates are yummy. Welcome, Amber!

Thanks so much to Sarah for having me today! I’m excited to share my release with Entangled Scandalous. Falling for the Pirate is a historical romance with a brooding hero and the heroine who isn’t afraid of him…much ;-)
When I came up for the idea for my historical romance series, I decided to call it Men of Fortune. That’s a historical term for pirates—which all four of my heroes are. Or, they were pirates. Now they’re reformed and trying to run a legit shipping business, but those shadows and secrets keep dragging them back. They have to fight to break free, and in the process, they find love. The heroines who love them are fierce in their own right. For them, a (barely) reformed pirate is the perfect hero. Here’s why…
He’s loyal. A crew relied on the men working together as a team for success. That included sailing the ship, capturing other ships—and in the case of the Men of Fortune, working with his band of brothers in the investment firm.
He’s protective. As captain, his crew would follow him anywhere, and he takes that responsibility seriously. In Falling for the Pirate, the hero Nate has also started a school for street boys to learn how to be a sailor, and provides food and safe shelter while they do so.
He’s confident. Well, he’d have to be to confront other ships in battle. It’s a confidence born of experience, a jaded wisdom that comes from seeing the worst of mankind—and of himself. But Juliana, the heroine of Falling for the Pirate, sees the best in him.
He’s a little bit wild. Okay, a lot wild. Nate has had to be determined and even feral to survive on the streets, in prison, and on the high seas. He snarls and growls at anyone who comes near. The heroine can tame him… but sometimes pirates are better untamed.
He’s good with his hands. Well, all those knots he’s had to tie. Enough said.
For those reasons and more, the heroines in the Men of Fortune series are very pleased with their heroes, dark pasts and all.
Thanks again to Sarah for having me today to share my new release. If you decide to read Falling for the Pirate, I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading – Amber

Vengeance is a dish best served in bed…

Juliana Hargate is not only the daughter of his enemy, but is destitute, very much alone—and exquisitely desirable.
And now that Nate has saved her life, she’s at his complete mercy…
Captive. All Juliana wanted was to clear her father’s name. Instead, she’s been struck with amnesia—unable to recall even her name—and imprisoned by a tall, imposing, and entirely unscrupulous pirate. A pirate whose eyes seem to look past her skirts and many petticoats, and whose touch sends delicious ripples of desire through her. With every passing day, she finds herself tempted to give him the very thing he’s determined to take…

$50 #Giveaway: Son of War, Daughter of Chaos by Janette Rallison
Son of War, Daughter of Chaos
Aislynn is accustomed to watching for the enemy. Her parents instructed her from the time she was young to look for the signs: people with greater than normal strength, eyes that can glow green, and have the ability to jump long distances. Over the years, Aislynn has come to view her parents’ fears as quirks—things that get in the way of having a normal high school life.
When Aislynn’s mother dies under suspicious conditions, her father doubles his restrictions. But all his precautions can’t stop the boy with glowing green eyes from finding Aislynn. She realizes too late she’s been drafted into an ancient Egyptian war, whether she’s prepared or not.
Janette Rallison is old. Don’t ask how old, because it isn’t polite. Let’s just say she’s older than she’d like to be and leave it at that.
Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family’s fearless little Westie dog can drive them off.
Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

Excerpt
I’d always heard the view from Top of the Mark was exceptional. When San Francisco Life listed the top ten places to view the skyline at night, Top of the Mark was ranked number three, so when the invitation to Harrison’s wedding arrived, I finally had an excuse to take in the view for myself.
Stupid, stupid me. I should have taken a cab up the steep hills to 999 California Street, hopped on the elevator to the nineteenth floor, and looked out the windows. I could have come with or without makeup, and I could have worn jeans and a t-shirt. If I’d brought Mia or Aleena with me, we could have had a nice dinner or dessert. If I’d brought Angus, we could have had both. Since Top of the Mark was built at the crest of Nob Hill, I could have snapped a jaw-dropping photo or two with my iPhone and made the sparkling skyline my screen saver.
But no. I had to come see it on the night my old boyfriend was marrying a 49ers cheerleader named Nicki, who’d had more remodeling than an episode of Property Brothers. She looked like a Who’s Who of Hollywood parts—Scarlett’s nose, Angelina’s lips, and Kim’s cheekbones. Her bias-cut dress clung to her other (ahem) purchased body parts and made me feel very un-girly in comparison.
“Nicki, this is Charlotte.” Harrison looked me level in the eye, and for the first time all evening, I felt an inch of relief that things hadn’t worked out between us. Five-eleven is pretty average for a guy, and Harrison towered over Nicki, even in her stilettos. But the only way he’d ever have been able to look down at me the way he’d looked down at Nicki when they’d exchanged their vows was if he’d stood on a stool. I know it’s not important, and it makes me sound completely shallow, but I read a romance once where the leading man “gazed down at his true love with tender eyes.” Someday, I’d like a guy to gaze down at me with tender eyes. And I’d rather not have to be standing in a hole for that to happen.
“It’s fabulous to finally meet you.” Nicki’s voice was chirpy, and her lips didn’t move quite right. “I want to thank you for breaking his heart”—she puckered up and baby-talked—“so I could put it back together.” She pulled him down by his tuxedo lapel to kiss his cheek, then wiped the red smear away with her acrylic-nailed thumb.
Well, this was awkward. And I wasn’t the only one feeling it. Harrison’s eyes begged me not to set the record straight.
You see, Harrison had broken up with me. “I’m not ready for the whole settling down with one woman thing,” he’d said four short months ago. “You’re ready to get married, and I won’t be ready for that scene for years.”
Maybe he’d meant dog years.
“Congratulations, you two. You make a much better couple than we ever did,” I said, although it stung to admit it.
“Did Will come? I saw Angus a little while ago,” Harrison said. Will is my twin brother. No, his name is not Wilbur, although we’ve been asked if our parents had a thing for Charlotte’s Web more times than I can count. His name is William, and he’s the reason I ended up dating Harrison in the first place.
Our families lived on the same street in Fairfield, but I barely remembered Harrison, who was two years older than us. Nearly a year ago, Will and Harrison had been at the same concert, and Harrison had asked Will if his little sister was still available. Will wasn’t sure if he meant me or McKayla, but since McKayla was already married, he gave Harrison my number. On our first date, Harrison admitted he hadn’t been asking about me, but he was decent enough to say he was glad for the mix-up. And the rest is history.
A short and tragic history, but history nonetheless.
“Will and his wife are in D.C. right now interviewing.” I stepped on my tiptoes and scanned the room over the groom’s head. “I didn’t know Angus was here.”
“I talked to him earlier, but he might have left already,” Harrison said.
“Aaahhh!”
I nearly knocked over a waiter as I jumped away from Nicki’s scream. “Look, Kitten. It’s Baxter Kensington. I didn’t think he’d actually come.”
Kitten? Did she really call him that? Harrison’s red face confirmed that yes, she had. “He plays for the 49ers,” he explained, and I nodded.
“I’d better go and make room for the celebrities,” I said, and Harrison grinned. He’d always appreciated my sarcasm, and his cute grin jabbed at my not-quite-healed heart.
“Thanks for coming.” He pulled me into a hug while his bride arranged her dress to best flatter her cleavage and patted the sides of her platinum fauxhawk. “Are things good with us?” he said quietly in my ear
I pulled away. “Oh sure.”
“I was worried—”
“Nothing to worry about. Go. Be happy.”
“Thanks, Charlotte.”
I turned away, my eyes stinging, and nearly barreled into one of the most stunning specimens of athleticism I’d ever seen. His pale yellow shirt and silvery gray suit contrasted beautifully with his dark skin. No wonder the bride was swooning about someone other than the groom. Poor Harrison looked like a little boy in comparison.
Ah, one of the hazards of marrying a cheerleader.
Through slightly blurred vision, I saw Harrison put his arm around Nicki. Not too long ago, I’d thought that would be me, though the venue and guest list would have been drastically different.

$50 Book Blast #Giveaway: Becoming Lady Lockwood (Regency Romance)
Amelia Beckett is delighted to be a widow. Married by proxy to a man she’d never met, Amelia recognizes that a fortuitous entry into widowhood frees her from meddlesome chaperones and matchmakers. Heiress to her mother’s sugar plantation in Jamaica, she happily anticipates working in a man’s world, with the additional credibility of her new title: Lady Lockwood. But with the arrival of Captain Sir William Drake, her plans quickly go awry . . . William has traversed the Atlantic with one purpose. If he cannot prove that Amelia’s marriage to his brother was a fraud, she will be entitled to a sizeable portion of his family’s estate. He is determined to return this duplicitous Lady to London for an official hearing, and he carries with him a letter that will ensure her cooperation . . . Left with no choice, Amelia joins the captain on his return voyage to England, and the two quickly find that ship life does not allow for evasion. Amelia and William are ceaselessly thrown together, and amidst fierce storms and ocean battles, what began as antipathy seems to be evolving quite unexpectedly. But as they draw ever closer to their destination, will the impossibility of their circumstances shatter any hope of a future together?

The crew released more sails as the breeze quickened, and Amelia watched, craning her neck as her island home, Jamaica, the pearl of the Antilles, gradually became no more than a small green mound on the horizon. A wave of homesickness washed over her. The ship rolled on the larger ocean waves, and she realized that her discomfort was not strictly limited to nostalgia. She was growing increasingly seasick.
Just as she reached this realization, she heard steps coming toward her and turning saw Captain Drake approaching.
“Miss Becket, you are looking most unwell. I must insist you take to your quarters and lie down.”
Even though he was completely correct, and her stomach was threatening to empty itself, the lack of compassion in his demeanor put her on the defensive.
“Indeed, Captain Drake. While I am touched by your concern for my well-being, I have no intention to retire, as I am feeling quite well.” The ship pitched again, and Amelia’s stomach pitched along with it.
“I assure you, my concern is for the deck of my ship and for my crew charged with keeping her in shipshape condition.”
Did the man’s arrogance know no bounds? Amelia felt her head spin in a wave of dizziness, and the captain grabbed onto her elbow.
“Your face is green, Miss Becket. I insist you take to your berth.” He spoke sharply, turning to the marine next to her. “Corporal, fetch Dr. Spinner to Miss Becket’s quarters.”
She wrenched her arm from his grasp. “Captain, I am not in the least ill.” She spoke through clenched teeth, afraid that if she opened her mouth, the contents of her stomach would make a most unwelcome appearance. She rested her hand in a manner that she hoped appeared casual against the netting of hammocks lining the rail of the ship. But truthfully, besides her determination not to allow the captain to order her about, it was the only thing holding her up.
Amelia nearly swooned with relief as Sidney Fletcher hurried toward them. “Miss Becket, are you unwell?” He held her elbow in the same manner as had Captain Drake a moment before, and Amelia leaned against him. “Will you allow me to escort you to your quarters then?”
“Thank you, Mr. Fletcher. That would be most welcome. How very gentlemanly of you.” She looked toward Captain Drake and narrowed her eyes.
A slight smile tugged at the corner of the captain’s lips, and Amelia found that it infuriated her. But when she opened her mouth to tell him so, her stomach betrayed her, and she was horrified to see her breakfast splatter over Captain Drake’s shiny boots.
Amelia and Captain Drake stared at each other in disbelief for one mortifying instant before she felt her stomach clench again and pressed her gloved hands against her mouth.
“A bucket!” Captain Drake bellowed.
