Up "A Dry Creek Bed" with Avery Flynn
Grab your copy right now! Click image.
You guys are going to have a blast today because my guest Avery Flynn is a character in herself. So much so that I'm pretty sure she and I have already bonded, and you guys know me so that oughta tell you something. HA! So those of you not backing away slowly, hang on. You're in for a treat, and heck, one of you is even in for a free book! Details follow the sit-down, so stay with us. In the meantime, say hello to Avery!
Welcome, Avery, and congratulations on your release! A DRY CREEK BED is the second book in the Dry Creek series. Without giving too much away, can you catch readers up on what happened in book one? How do the two books tie together?
OK, everyone got their seatbelt on? Let's blaze a trail. In Up a Dry Creek Claire Layton is taking out the trash when she finds a dead body and the killer forces her to look for the victim's phone and flashdrive or he'll harm Claire's family. Then, it gets worse, like house-trashing, psycho killer worse. Enter super hottie private eye Jake Warrick. There's danger, there's adventure and there's smokin' hot sexual tension. The heroine in Up a Dry Creek is the connecting wire between the hero and heroine in A Dry Creek Bed. Beth Martinez is Claire's best friend and she is in serious denial about a lifelong crush she's had on Claire's eldest brother, Dry Creek Sheriff Hank Layton. While you can read the two books as standalone, I think it's more fun to read them together.
How incredible does that sound? I think you've sold me already! LOL. There's a totally awesome line (one of many) in your blurb: Hank can't stop thinking about Beth to the point where he's afraid of becoming permanently bowlegged. I love this description! I've got to ask . . . what's going on to make him bow-legged? *grin*
Poor Hank. He has it so bad for Beth and she just refuses to admit her crush on him. Sure, she has her reasons but since she isn't sharing those with Hank, he is in an uncomfortable place. Of course, all that sexual tension does boil over a few times and then you just need to step back because those two are drawn together like magnets.
An uncomfortable place — I love that! (I bet he's even "blue" – LMAO!) What's your favorite scene from A DRY CREEK BED? Why?
Man that one's hard because there are so many that I love. I can narrow it down to three:
When Beth wakes up in a panic thinking she and Hank got married.
Any time Beth and Claire interact because they are so funny together. They are the type of friends who finish each other's sentences and know exactly what the other is thinking with out the lift of a waxed eyebrow.
The scene when the villain gets just desserts – it is a fitting end for a real baddie.
I did a double take over the first one. What a way to wake up! LOL. Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
I read everything. There is not a genre (fiction or not) that I won't read. My goal is to read 100 books this year as part of The Book Vixen's reading challenge. You can check out what I've read/am reading here: http://averyflynn.com/amreading/
Holy moley, woman. I'd have to give up writing (or motherhood) to read that many books, LOL! Have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
Not about personality traits but definately about plot twists. I wish I could say I won those battles, but I would be lying.
Ah, yes. I am a bit too familiar, LOL. (And as a side note, I'm still thinking of poor Hank and his bowlegs, LOL.) Have you ever made big changes in your story because someone – your crit partner, a friend, or beta reader – really didn't like it? Are you glad you did (or didn't)?
Great question. I've rewritten and made huge changes but those usually happen because my gut keeps telling me the stories not right. I've learned to listen to my stomach twitches.
OMG, I do the same thing! Something just doesn't feel right and it nags me until I figure it out, then all the sudden the writing is SO much easier! Yay-it's-not-just-me! LOL. (Although that's a really cool radar – I love it.) How do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
Most of it is in my head, but thanks to technology I can do a quick electronic search whenever needed.
Yes. That is me. I wonder if we're related? *grin* Which of your novels most reflects who you are as a writer? Why?
Man, there'se pieces of me in all of them. I don't think it's any one thing in a specific book so much as the humor that threads through the Dry Creek series.
I love it when there's humor mixed in. (You're not about to get a restraining order on me, are you? Frankly, I'm starting to worry myself, lol.) Okay, let's have it. What are you currently working on?
I'm hard at working writing Sam Layton's story. And let me tell you, he's really met his match in Josie Winarsky, a tall, platinum blonde, tattooed painter who is hell bent on finding a long-buried treasure. With Sam at her side and a Las Vegas loan shark's muscle hot on her trail, the treasure she finds turns out to be much more valuable than emeralds and rubies.
Well, can you say *hook*? LOL! Okay, let's get back to A DRY CREEK BED since we can grab it right now. Y'all stay tuned to find out how you can win it!
[image error]A DRY CREEK BED | blurb & links
"I do believe I can arrest you for looking at someone like that. You've got to be breaking some indecency laws."
Taking a deep breath, Beth recovered her bearings. Mostly. "You're out of your jurisdiction sheriff."
Dry Creek County Sheriff Hank Layton is the stuff of dreams. Nasty, steamy, delicious fantasies that leave Beth Martinez weak-kneed and desperately wanting the man she can never have.
Hank can't stop thinking about Beth to the point where he's afraid of becoming permanently bowlegged. And even though the sexual tension between them is thick enough to trip over, she runs every time he chases.
But when a mysterious developer forces her neighbors off their land, Beth becomes the one person standing between the scoundrel and millions of dollars. Only Hank can help her uncover the truth. Together they risk their lives exposing decades-old secrets and learn that everything is not as it seems in their rural Nebraska town.

The name Avery Flynn is a pseudonym for the author who, at least for now, prefers to remain behind the scenes. She believes having Avery as her alter ego is a very good thing because, as she says, "Pen name Avery is way cooler than me. Her favorite color is hot pink. She drinks single malt scotch on the rocks. She loves the Argentinean tango and stays at Iceland's Ice Hotel."
Author Avery has been writing since she was a child and her father gave her a baby blue Brother typewriter. She couldn't read but nonetheless wrote numerous stories about her stuffed animals in gibberish. She hasn't stopped since, though she maintains that her spelling has gotten much better and she now prefers to write in English.
Today she's enjoying her own happily ever after with her dashing husband, three crazy kids and two arthritic dogs. She dreams of one day having a floor-to-ceiling library à la Beauty and the Beast and is working to perfect the coffee IV drip.

"The Curse of Gremdon" with Ciara Knight
Get the CURSE! Click image.
Two fabulous things about today. One, it's February, which means spring just sounds closer than it did in January. Two, and the better by far, is the visit we have today from Ciara Knight, who is here with her new book AND a copy to give away. Details for entry follow, but first let's chat with Ciara.
Welcome, Ciara, and congratulations on the release of THE CURSE OF GREMDON. The story sounds amazing—can you tell our readers a bit about it?
It is a high fantasy romance. There is more sword fighting in this book than sorcery, that comes into play more in book II. J In this installment, all the inhabitants of the kingdom are locked behind the castle walls due to a hideous curse that has robbed them of their land, family, friends, and freedom.
That sounds like such an intense, high-stakes plot! As I read the blurb, something immediately snagged my attention. Forgive the way my mind works (most of the regulars around here are all too familiar, LOL), but I have to ask: If the male warriors are the only ones allowed sex, how do the women qualify to serve them? Are they a separate subset of this society?
There are woman specially trained in the art of pleasing a man. They are kept in the Elders tower and only sent out when needed. They are granted to the male warriors as rewards for fierce battles and warrior accomplishments.
Yowza! While I've still got my nose in the blurb, I'll say I love the twist — that of a great deception — you reveal at the end. Is the point at which this is discovered near the end of the story (the final showdown, so to speak), or is it just the beginning of your characters' battles?
Actually, it is in the middle. I know, strange place, but you'll understand if you read the story.
Aw, we're hooked and you're just reeling us in, LOL! If a reader is unfamiliar with your work, which of your books would you suggest he or she read first? Why?
If the reader enjoys young adult/sweet romance then they should check out my Battle for Souls series. Love's Long Shadow, a prequel novella to the series, was released in October 2011. Book I, Rise from Darkness, will be released late March 2012.
If they prefer a spicy romance then they should read The Curse of Gremdon.
Action and romance is an incredible combination, and it sounds like THE CURSE OF GREMDON is packed with both! Let's switch things up a bit. Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
I read anything and everything, well, not long technical kind of stuff or anything too extreme. Some of my favorite books are Redeeming Love (Christian), Hunger Games (YA), and Ender's Game (sci-fi). I'm about to read my first Karen Marie Moning book. I'm so excited. J
LOL. Definitely a variety of interests! Let's sneak back into the bedroom. Looking back over all of the intimate moments you've created between characters, which scene would you most like to experience for yourself? What makes it so alluring?
I'd love to experience the scene near the lake. There is something about being totally alone with the one you love in the great outdoors.
I totally agree with you there. Being outside is incredible! (Why is everyone looking at me? Hmph.) Okay, Ciara, moving from love to war, have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
Yes, Tardon is headstrong. Um…he won, but don't tell him that.
My lips are totally sealed! ;c) Have you ever made big changes in your story because someone – your crit partner, a friend, or beta reader – really didn't like it? Are you glad you did (or didn't)?
Absolutely, there is nothing better than a beta reader or crit partner's opinion. I'm blessed with some amazing people around me.
Oh, how I love critters with their fresh eyes! LOL. How do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
I don't really keep track of plot elements or twists, but I do have spreadsheets for other elements of a story. Who has what power, age of characters, and traits.
That's a great idea, and especially when you have those extras to keep track of, like their powers. (I don't think I'm organized enough to write fantasy, LOL.) Which of your novels most reflects who you are as a writer? Why?
Wow, tough question. I think each shows a different side of me as a writer. That's what I love about writing, I can create anything I want. There is something about that kind of freedom. BUT, I'd love to be Arianna. She is so strong, independent, and fearless. I think she's my idol. J
LOL! Writing such a fabulous character makes YOU fabulous, right? *grin* And on the subject of writing, what are you currently working on?
Rise from Darkness, YA Paranormal book, will be released March 2012.
WIP – Cyperpunk – Think Terminator vs. Heroes with YA characters in a Firefly (earthbound) setting.
Plenty to look forward to, but we can start right here with THE CURSE OF GREMDON. Let's take a closer look, then readers be sure to stay tuned for giveaway details!

In a world where marriage is forbidden, sex is only granted to male warriors, and the outer realm is full of murderous creatures, Arianna fights to protect the life of her only living relative, her brother.
Tardon, an elite warrior, is granted anything he desires by the Elders, but finds little joy in the voluptuous women presented to him. Born for the bloodlust found only in battle, complicated emotions emerge when he discovers his equal in the alluring warrior, Arianna.
Charged by the Elders with saving the castle from attack, Tardon and Arianna risk thecurse when they traverse the vast outer realm to retrieve serum from the Tree of Life. If successful, the Elders have promised Tardon the right to marry and Arianna the cure for her brother's death fever. Will their love carry them through or will the discovery of a great deception be their ultimate demise?

Rosalie Lario Unleashes "Demons of Infernum"

Can you resist the HEART OF THE INCUBUS? Click image to learn more.
Hi, y'all! I know you're looking at that gorgeous cover over there, but Rosalie Lario is here and she used to be a lawyer, so that power stare-down of hers is going to get intimidating if you guys don't pay attention. *grin.* She's got a very cool, very popular series to tell you about and a book to give away, so let's give her the floor, shall we?
Welcome, Rosalie, and congratulations a phenomenal series! Demons of Infernum is wildly popular with readers and critics alike. Can you introduce our readers to the series and its titles thus far?
Thanks so much for having me here today! The Demons of Infernum is a paranormal romance series featuring four half-demon brothers who work as interdimensional bounty hunters for the Elden Council. The stories are set in modern-day New York City, in a world very much like our own…with one exception. Supernatural beings roam the streets, undetected by most humans. They aren't the stuff of horror stories—at least not in the traditional sense. Rather, they're species from other dimensions who've traveled to Earth by means of interdimensional portals. Most are law-abiding citizens, but every now and again a fugitive is on the loose…and that's where these half-demon bad boys come in. Bred to be genetically superior by their father, a demon and an evil scientist, Keegan, Taeg, Ronin, and Dagan are hybrids. Each bears unique genetic makeup, but the four of them are similar in their loyalty for each other and their love for apprehending the criminals who seek to cause harm.
Each book in the series—Blood of the Demon, Mark of the Sylph, Touch of the Angel, and Call of the Siren—features one of the brothers and his love interest. I've also written a novella entitled Heart of the Incubus, which features an incubus friend of the brothers.
Wow! That's such an amazing concept (and a great summary!) What can readers expect next from the series?
I'm currently hard at work on the final book, Call of the Siren, which is the youngest brother Dagan's story. Print release is tentatively scheduled for March 2013, though the ebook version will likely release earlier.
You've had some amazing reviews and points of recognition. Which of these accolades brought with it the biggest wow factor for you as an author?
Thank you! For someone who has dreamt of writing her whole life but never really thought she could get published, each and every authorial recognition is an amazing milestone. I'm over the moon with excitement at how well-received the series has been.
I can only imagine, but I love how you view the experience. ;c) This may be an odd question, but I'm struck by your covers. How did you come upon the design theme?
They're gorgeous, aren't they? The cover artist came up with them based on the storylines. I think she did an amazing job, but the series is being re-covered as part of my publisher's agreement to distribute books with publishing heavyweight Publishers Group West. I have to say the new covers are even more striking. I'm totally in love with them!
I could quite honestly hang those covers on the wall as artwork! But which one to start with? *grin* If a reader is unfamiliar with your work, which of your books would you suggest he or she read first? Why?
I'd suggest starting with Blood of the Demon, Book 1 in my Demons of Infernum series. Even though the books stand alone, each story builds upon the last.
That makes total sense! Now let's put you on the other side of the book for a moment. Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
I absolutely love the paranormal, and I have ever since my early obsession with the vampire-bunny series Bunnicula. Once I discovered paranormal romance, I knew I'd found my one true love. By far the majority of books I read are paranormal romance, but I do read broadly within the romance genre. Anything but westerns. J
Aw, really? That sounds like a story I'd like to hear, LOL! Looking back over all of the intimate moments you've created between characters, which scene would you most like to experience for yourself? What makes it so alluring?
Any scene featuring Taeg. I'm totally in love with the bad boy demon!
And now I am totally intrigued by him! LOL. How do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
I have no idea! Just kidding… sorta. I do have an outline that I prepare prior to starting a story, but I tend to veer off of it. Once I've completed a manuscript, I'll go back through to make sure I've kept everything straight.
Now THAT I can relate to! I'm glad I'm not the only one, lol. Which of your novels most reflects who you are as a writer? Why?
I think each story in the series represents my progression as a writer, but if I had to choose one, I'd pick Mark of the Sylph (see my aforementioned admission of love for Taeg).
You do realize you're teasing us mercilessly about Taeg, right? Mmmm hmmm. What are you currently working on? (And if you say Taeg …)
I'm currently hard at work on Call of the Siren, Book 4 of the series, which features the youngest brother Dagan.
Now that we know what we can look forward to, let's take a closer look at book 3.5: HEART OF THE INCUBUS. Then y'all stay right here for details on the giveaway!

Biochemist Cresso Taylor lives the sort of lifestyle most men would envy—he has wealth, natural incubus charm, and more women than he can handle. But it's not enough anymore. Not after meeting Genevieve Russell, the sexy scientist who works with him at Elcorp Laboratory. And she wants absolutely nothing to do with him.
After her fiancé broke her heart, Genevieve has had enough of womanizers. She's determined to steer clear of sexy-as-sin Dr. Taylor, despite the fact that his incubus allure makes her want to rip his clothes off. But when a secret admirer's affection turns to the macabre with threatening notes and grisly gifts, Cresso appoints himself her protector. As she and Cresso hunt her stalker, she discovers there's a lot more to the sensual incubus than she ever imagined.

I'm Sweet . . . and 7 More Surprising Revelations
Congratulations to melorabrock(at)etc, who scored a gift card in this week's giveaway. To enter, simply subscribe by email using the box to your left and you'll be automatically eligible each week as long as you remain a subscriber. For full details, click here.
No one was more surprised than little ol' me when my new pal Christine Warner honored me with the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award last week, and in the past I've received similar endorsements from Renee Vincent and Krystal Wade. (My husband is amazed I've convinced one person, let alone three. LOL.) I'm now bound by duty to tell you seven things about myself, so let's get to it. ;c) (PS: If you missed my previous list of 7 Things you Didn't Know About Me, check it out here.)
1. I got married when I was 19 which, as my husband loves to say, was a "long, LONG" time ago. Going on 15 years later, I still like him. Even when he says that.
2. I have a bizarre connection with one of my friends. We met when we were pregnant and due the same month — her with her 4th, me with my 6th. Our due dates were back to back. Then we were scheduled for induction on the same day two weeks before our due dates. THEN we ended up having our babies before the scheduled induction . . . on the same day. And we live hundreds of miles apart!
3. I can't find the remote for the TV, the bottom of the kitchen sink, or the end of the laundry pile.
4. My husband can fix anything, which really came in handy recently when one of the kids flushed a bar of soap and *we think* the stopper for the bathtub.
5. (This one is for you, Christine!) I LOVE Ghost Adventures. I don't know why, but the words come so much more easily when it's on TV. (And it has to be on TV. It doesn't work if I stream it.)
6. I totally dig NFL football. And my husband does not. What are the odds? (He says he'd rather go outside and play with the kids than watch TV. Is he awesome or what? And then, well then I can see my football in peace! LOL.)
7. I love hot peppers and hot sauce. I put jalapenos on everything, and when hot sauce makes me cry and sweat, I'll buy it by the gallon.
There you have it! Seven more things you might not have known about me. Oh, and that sweet thing? It's just a rumor. *grin*
If you haven't already done so, please consider "liking" my FB author page as well as my brand new page with Elaina Lee, For the Muse Publishing. Both boxes are to your left, lower in the sidebar — one click and you're done! And if you *really* have a taste for the bizarre, my husband has a FB page made hilarious by his commentary. (You'd have to see the pics to understand, LOL.) Check it out!

Can't wait for this one? Check out FAMILIAR LIGHT(only $3) to get the early scoop on the unsolved murders leading to the LIES! Here's today's snippet between Holden and Julia, ex-lovers who haven't seen one another since she disappeared years ago without a word of explanation.
Reasons not to trust him begged for her attention, but she wanted nothing of them. It had been far too long since anyone had held her, and Holden was like comfort food to her battered soul. Her reasons for leaving existed as petty little bits of debris scattered on her emotional floorboard, years of pain and regret not enough to stop the crashing of her defenses when he was around.
Although every moment they'd once shared had been some version of a lie, she'd managed to sleep at night just fine … there was certainly nothing stopping her from doing it now.
Besides, this time, she had absolutely nothing to lose.
Everything was already gone.

01.28.12 #SweetSat Samples: Unforgiven

Riley Beckett's past just came back to haunt her ... and this time he's got a gun. UNFORGIVEN ... click image.
Gage and Riley were once lovers, but a deadly twist of fate tore them apart. Now, one year later, they're thrown together by a murder in which Gage was the intended victim and Riley is wanted for the crime. Last week they tracked down someone who might offer answers, but found his house doesn't look lived in. Here, they return for a closer look.
This time, Gage parked several houses away alongside a patch of woods. He tucked his gun in his waistband, shifting so he could do so before exiting the truck. "If you want to stay out here . . . ."
"Forget it," she said.
"Figured as much." He grinned, sending tingles of awareness cajoling with the nerves she was already wrestling. Their unspoken truce strengthened under the warmth of his gaze. "We should be able to follow the tree line to the house," he said as they climbed out. "Maybe if anyone sees us, they won't connect us to the truck."
"So we're just regular loitering burglar types. That makes me feel better," she said. Her stomach turned at the idea of coming face to face with Tom.
Gage responded by lacing his fingers through hers. It felt right.
Too right.

If you thought Friday got to be cool because it's, well, Friday, you better think again! She's all kinds of excited and once you see what she has to say, you will be as well. Why? Well, now, you'll just have to keep reading, won't you? Deena, welcome . . . and take it away!**Contest Closed: Congrats to Anne @ acm05(at)etc, who was chosen by random.org as our winner!**
OH, THE JOY OF RELEASE!
Thank you so much, Sarah Ballance, for allowing me to enjoy the release of RELIC, my second novel in the Brethren series, with you and your readers! Make sure you read to the end since there's a surprise waiting for you there.
What is the meaning of RELEASE? As a verb, it means to allow or enable to escape from confinement; set free. Well, I am setting something free today. Raphael and Serena's story! It's a story of love lost, love found, and love that is eternal.
Rather than wait any longer, here is the blurb and an excerpt from RELIC for you to enjoy:
BLURB:
Raphael, a Brethren Savior, an angel with a forgotten past, has lost his power to heal and is on a self-imposed guilt trip to get it back. If he can't, his tour of eternal duty as Brethren Savior will be revoked. On his journey, he winds up enmeshed in a web of attempted murder and resurrection all thanks to a woman he's only seen in a photograph and by chance on an Arizona desert hiking trail.
Serena Sikes is a wanted woman. Desired by "undesirables" for a gift her brother gave her- a stolen relic with suspected healing powers. Hunted down in the Arizona desert and left for dead, she is found by none other than the angel who cannot heal.
Raphael and Serena are inexorably bound together, for locked deep within the relic's heart had lived the soul of his long lost wife. Now, it resides inside Serena. Evil lurks around every corner as Raphael tries to keep both Serena and his dead wife's soul alive and lustful temptation at bay.
Three souls bound together by an ancient relic, bound by a timeless gift, and bound by a love that is eternal.
EXCERPT:
Serena lay asleep in her hospital bed, a small, seemingly fragile wisp of a woman. The way the setting sun cast a glow about her face, she looked enchanting and more like a delicate flower. He could almost smell the sweet scent of a Lily of the Valley in the air. He shook himself free of his musings as he moved into her room and quietly took a seat next to her.
Glancing around the room, he found the sweet-smelling culprit that had captivated him—a small bottle of perfume. Returning to gaze upon his enchantress, he noticed the bruising along her jaw line much more pronounced since he'd first come upon her. A cold, steel anger welled within him. His eyes trailed down to her slender arm outfitted with an IV, and to all the machines with their bells and beeps.
"I'm sorry, Serena," he whispered. "You wouldn't have needed all of this if I could've done my job properly." He bristled in frustration and leaned his head against his arms resting on the bedrail. He noticed her stirring in her sleep. She seemed agitated and surprised him by blindly reaching out to grab hold of his hand.
"Mmm…I cannot die. I am immortal. An feidir le heinne cuidiu liom? Can anyone help me? Graim thu, Raphael, anam chara. I love you, my soul mate." Serena whimpered and fell silent once again.
The chair screeched across the floor as Raphael sprung out of it like a Jack-in-the-box. Her hand stayed firmly gripped around his, and a flood of memories—well-hidden for centuries—came crashing through unbidden. Sirona, Goddess of Healing—the love of his immortal life, his wife—smiled at him as they walked in the mountains. She bathed him in the hot roman baths. She made love with him under the stars. She was lifeless in his arms as he carried her to her temple. He was asking E.L. to wipe his memory clean of all remembrances of her and to harden his heart.
Raphael wrenched his hand away from Serena's tight grasp, involuntarily backing up to the door. He clutched his chest over his racing heart, now filled with centuries of unresolved anguish, his mind buzzed with too many questions.
Serena's eyes fluttered open. He must have had a look of utter horror on his face because she raised her hand to her face shielding the bruise. "It appears worse than it feels," she stated quietly. "Really. Have you come to fix the TV? They told me someone would be coming by this afternoon to fix it."
"Uh…no," Raphael croaked. "I, uh…I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I'll be on my way." I have to get out of here. Who the hell is she, some kind of witch? Why is this happening now? And where do I begin to process what I just experienced?
"But wait. Who are you? Why did you come to my room?"
Now she doesn't know who I am? What gives? "I'm the one who found you and brought you here to the hospital, actually. I was checking to see how you were doing. Now I see you're doing much better, so I'm going to leave you to your rest." Raphael headed to the exit.
"Wait! Please, before you go I'd like to say something." He turned around slowly and stood transfixed by her glittering emerald eyes. "Thank you. You saved my life, and I'm forever grateful." She smiled, and her eyes brimmed with unshed tears.
"Make no mistake," he grumbled. "I didn't save you. The doctors did. But you're welcome for bringing you here. Now, I really must go."
"Hey," Serena shouted as he walked out the door, "what did you say your name was?"
He stopped but couldn't face her again. "I didn't."

Featured Author: Coral Moore with "Broods of Fenrir"

Discover the world within the pages of BROODS, available in ebook or paperback. Click image.
Greetings, y'all! Today's guest is Coral Moore, whose stunning new book BROODS OF FENRIR is keeping the charts warm at Amazon. The readers are loving this one, calling it a must read for lovers of paranormal romance, shifters, and werewolves. And I'm excited to say one of you will walk away with your very own e-copy, so stay tuned to find out how to enter to win.
Welcome, and congratulations on your book BROODS OF FENRIR! This story promises to be powerful, with strong conflict on many levels for hero Brand Geirson. Can you tell introduce readers to the story? I love, BTW, how you have history for the story posted on the site. That's both clever and fascinating.
Hi Sarah! Thanks for having me on your blog today.
Brand is a five hundred year old member of a race of werewolves called the Broods of Fenrir. He's spent much of his life trying to escape the brutal nature of his culture, but events draw him back into the political snarl he's been evading since he killed his father.
The history was a bit of background I made up while I was writing the novel and I decided to put it out there for people who wanted more information on the origin of my werewolves. I hope to expand on it before I put out the second book.
Whoa, that's an intense plot! Did you plan to write a series all along, or did readers (or characters!) demand it?
I had originally planned for this to be a standalone book, with the possibility of writing other stories in the world at some point. As I was getting ready to publish this one I got an idea that has grown into a second book in the series. Book 2 won't be the same as Book 1 for a lot of reasons, but it will be a continuation of Brand's story.
It's so rewarding when stories take lives of their own, and such a testament to the author's talent. :c) I checked out your bio, and a science geek myself, I love how you pursued biology in college. How do you feel this complements your writing, or do you think there's a relationship there at all?
Absolutely. I think my biology background comes through in everything I write. It keeps my stories grounded in the essential rules of the universe, even when I write about fantastical beings that don't exist. The rigorous methodology driven into me by my science training helps me to resolve problems in my plots. Plus, knowing a thing or two about genetics comes in more handy than you might think. *grin*
Grounded with the essential rules – what a great approach. And how much do I love the tease about genetics? LOL! If a reader is unfamiliar with your work, which of your books would you suggest he or she read first? Why?
If readers want a brief introduction to the Broods world, there are two short stories available.
"Feral Attraction" is the story of how Erik and Bera meet. They are two secondary, but important characters in the Broods novel. It's available for free on the Broods website.
"Chance Encounter" is the story of how Brand meets Alice. Their relationship is an integral part of the Broods storyline. It's only on Amazon right now, and will be free on February 1st and 2nd.
I'm marking my calendar! Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
I read a lot of genres, even more than I write. In general, I gravitate more toward the speculative fiction realm—fantasy, horror and science fiction in particular. As a reader, discovering the strange and interesting details of made-up worlds and creatures really appeals to me.
I love horror! And let's hope that's not a good segue to this, LOL: looking back over all of the intimate moments you've created between characters, which scene would you most like to experience for yourself? What makes it so alluring?
Wow, what an interesting—and difficult—question. All of my stories have a very strong romantic element to them. I like to write about complex relationships and their growth. There is something I love about every couple I've written, so it's very difficult to pick one specific scene. I'm going to go in a slightly less sexy direction than the question probably intends. There's a scene about halfway through Broods where Brand and Dagny share a hunting dream and then cuddle for a while. It's a very sweet scene, and a pivotal moment in their relationship. For me it personifies that first intimacy between a couple.
Those first intimate moments always give me butterflies. And on the flipside of love, there's war. ;c) Have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
Definitely! Before I started writing Broods, I would have said that my characters always behaved and never did anything I didn't want. But, then came Brand. He's a stubborn guy by nature and very single-minded. Once he has an idea how a situation should be tackled, he won't be swayed. He and I have had words about this character flaw several times, but usually I'm the one that ends up giving in, because I know he won't let it go. I've had to write several scenes around him as a result. In the end I think it made a better story, so I'm not too mad at him.
LOL! He may be a huge pain, but he sure does vouch for your strength at characterization! Have you ever made big changes in your story because someone – your crit partner, a friend, or beta reader – really didn't like it? Are you glad you did (or didn't)?
The advice I listen to the most consistently comes from my editor, because she has a good feeling for what readers need at different parts of the story. She didn't care much for the original beginning of Broods after she read it, and I took what she said to heart, reworking the first four chapters quite significantly. I think the new start works much better to ease readers into my world, and the initial scene (with Brand at a murder scene) is now one of my favorites, so I'm definitely glad I made that change.
That's quite a scene to kick off a book – I bet readers are hooked there! And of course there's much to follow. How do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
I don't have an organized system, and I know that's one of the areas I can improve on. I use a combination of handwritten notebooks, Word and Excel files, and a storyline tracking program called Storyboard. Depending on the book I use a different combination of those tools. Some stories require very detailed tracking, and some I can get by with a few scribbled notes.
*Sheepishly raises hand at mention of scribbled notes* LOL! What are you currently working on?
I like to work on sevearl projects at once, because I'm a mood oriented writer. Right now I'm editing my next release, Elements of Rebellion, which is not in the Broods world and is a little more of a traditional fantasy rather than paranormal. I'm also writing the next Broods book, tentatively called Fenrir's Chosen. Two other books wrestling for my attention right now are a fantasy romance and a science fiction. I guess I'm proving the point I made earlier about liking multiple genres. *wink*
That you are! LOL. And while we're enticing readers with your work, let's take a closer look at BROODS OF FENRIR. Then we'll get to know you a little better and spill the details on the giveaway. Shall we?

Shapeshifter Brand Geirson was raised to rule the Broods of Fenrir, but he refused his birthright. Instead, he killed their brutal leader–his own father–and walked away.
For hundreds of years he's avoided brood society, until a werewolf kills an innocent human woman and Brand finds himself dragged back into the violent politics of the shapeshifters. When the two brood women who mean the most to him come under threat, he must take up the throne and risk becoming the kind of vicious bastard his father was, or let the broods descend further into chaos–taking the friend he swore to protect and his lover with them.

Coral Moore has always been the kind of girl who makes up stories. Fortunately, she never quite grew out of that. She writes because she loves to invent characters and the desire to find out what happens to her creations drives the tales she tells.
Prompted by a general interest in how life works, her undergraduate schooling was in biology. She follows science news and enjoys conversations about genetics and microbiology as much as those about vampires and werewolves. Coral writes speculative fiction and is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Writing at Albertus Magnus College.
Currently she lives in Connecticut with the love of her life, who offers both encouragement and kicks in the tail when necessary. Also in residence are two mammals of the families Canidae and Felidae.

Featured Author: P.R. Mason's "Entanglements"

You have GOT to read this first chapter! Click image to see it.
Welcome back, dear readers, and thanks so much for joining me again for your daily dose of someone awesome. (No, not ME. My guest! LOL!) Today we are joined by P.R. Mason, who really put her heart into this interview. You're about to take an amazing look at this author, and when you're finished one of you will get an equally fabulous close up of two of her books. Yep, that's right — she giving away e-copies of ENTANGLEMENTS *and* FATED HEARTS. Wanna know how to win? Stay tuned!
CONTEST CLOSED! Congratulations to Krista, who was chosen by random.org as the giveaway winner. Thanks to everyone for commenting!
Welcome, P.R. and congratulations on your new release, ENTANGLEMENTS. While stalking you for this interview, I found the inspiration behind this story to be fascinating. Quantum physics? Wow! Will you please share the story with our readers while I scrape my jaw off the floor?
As an offshoot of string theory, the idea of multiple universes fascinates me. I think what first attracted my attention specifically to the theory of entanglements was Einstein's quote describing the phenomenon as "Spooky action at a distance." Scientists had discovered that a particle could be tweaked miles away from another and cause the second particle to react even though there was no discernable or measurable connection between them. The scientists theorized that the two were "entangled" in an alternate dimension or universe, of which they believed there are at least seven.
The idea that scientists actually believe there are other dimensions out there we can't see shocked me. I always thought that was just something from science fiction. The more I read about the theory of entanglements, the more interesting I found it. For instance, in the world of quantum physics, effect does not always follow cause. Sometimes they're reversed. I began to wonder what would happen if people or beings were entangled in alternate universes? What if the phenomenon observable with particles were applicable to people and we just don't know it yet? From these thoughts the plot for the novel ENTANGLEMENTS was born.
I usually insert a quip here, but you know, I've got nothing. (Although I want to go look all that up and read about it now, which for those of you who have ever doubted me should serve as proof that I'm a science nerd.) That is just freaking a-maze-ing! And I have to say, I read the first chapter of ENTANGLEMENTS on your website and it sucked me right in. :c) There's a lot of atmosphere in those words—can you tell how your writing is affected by the city you call home?
For one thing, Savannah is beautiful and has an enormous amount of character. As the 13th colony, it was established in 1733 and therefore has a historic downtown that is architecturally rich and a delight to the conscious senses. But Savannah has strangely wonderful layers underneath the surface that appeal to my love of the unusual. This town is home to a plethora of quirky characters, odd places and weird historic happenings that provide fodder for fictionalization. Even after eleven years here, every day in Savannah feeds my artistic core.
Savannah, for instance, was voted the most haunted city in America by a parapsychology group. Ghosts, as evidenced by orbs, EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon), moving objects and full apparitions, are as plentiful as the Spanish moss here. My sister and I once owned an antique shop built over one of the old burial grounds. We regularly allowed paranormal investigations with fascinating results such as an EVP of a panting ghost dog and a child's voice saying, "he likes you".
But there is more to Savannah than just the hauntings. For example, we have a "magic" square in the historic downtown that reportedly grants wishes to those who visit it and use the correct wish-making technique. Vortexes are also plentiful here, allegedly. One of my friends swears he observed a figure pop up out of the ground in the middle of a square. And since my friend isn't mentally ill, I have to give his personal experience some credence. These are just to name a few of the oddities I love around here.
Savannah has opened my eyes and my imagination in ways no other city could and provides endless inspiration.
Um, road trip? Seriously, I love ghostly happenings. I was sold on that alone, but now I think I want to move there (where I promise not to stalk you) just to breathe that atmosphere. Well, you've clearly got a great spot for inspiration, so let's see how it moved your story. Which scene from ENTAGLEMENTS was the most powerful for you? Why?
I found the first scene and the last scene the most powerful. Without giving too much away about the end of the story, the two scenes are at opposite ends of an emotional spectrum. Like many people, no doubt, my life has been touched by a moment in time I would give anything to change. My heroine Kizzy feels this very keenly with regard to her brother, Adam and what happens to him in the first scene of the novel. Her guilt drives her to do some reckless but brave acts in order to protect others and save them from a similar fate. In Entanglements, I've given Kizzy the chance to do things I'd love to be able to do in real life.
I'll vouch for the first scene. That was really fantastic (see it here) and I do love how you made it come full circle. If a reader is unfamiliar with your work, which of your books would you suggest he or she read first? Why?
ENTANGLEMENTS is my latest full-length novel and I believe the best thing I've written. It is an urban fantasy with a sweet romance thrown in. The novel was written to unfold at a the pace of a thriller but also to have heart. I hope I achieved that.
A thriller with heart — I LOVE that! Which genre are you drawn to as a reader? Do you prefer to read in the same genre as your WIP or do you mix it up?
My reading is very eclectic. I love paranormal, urban fantasy and steampunk. But I also find myself reading mysteries, romantic suspense, thrillers and mainstream fiction. Lately, I've been reading the Game of Thrones series, Stephen King's new release and Redaction, which is a post apocalyptic romance/thriller by Linda Andrews.
I so love the mystery and suspense genres! ::bonds:: LOL. Looking back over all of the intimate moments you've created between characters, which scene would you most like to experience for yourself? What makes it so alluring?
I would love to personally experience the romance that I created between Rom and Kizzy in Entanglements. It is sweet but powerful. And being able to go back and experience first love would be fantastic.
You're selling me more on this book with every answer you give me, LOL! (YAY!) Have you ever battled with any of your characters over their personality traits? If so, who won – you or the character?
Kizzy from Entanglements battled was a challenge. For me, sometimes a story springs from an idea for a character and sometimes it springs from the idea for a plot. As I described above, the idea for the plot of Entanglements came first and then I had to decide what sort of heroine would be caught up in what I'd envisioned. At least five versions of the first 30 pages were written before I felt I had the beginning and the character "right". The Kizzy of earlier versions had brown hair and was too whiney. She wasn't bold. She didn't have courage…and recklessness. Kizzy didn't fully form into a real person for me until I decided she had extremely curly red hair, which she straightened when trying to conform to societal expectations. Her personality soon followed and became as fiery as her hair. Also, since the novel is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance, I wanted Kizzy, to be engaged in a hobby that reflected the feisty but reckless aspects of her personality. Urban spelunking fit the needs of both the character and the plot.
Urban spelunking! That's wild! It sounds like you nailed her persona but good! How do you keep track of plot elements or twists?
I'm a firm believer in the three-act structure but in other ways would call myself a pantser when it comes to writing style. I will generally start out with an outline that identifies the major plot points and twists and where they appear in the story. I draw up a chart listing the plot points and the scenes, which will be necessary to set forth those points. Then I draw up a character sketch for the main characters listing their major personality traits as well as their goal, motivation and conflict. That gives me an idea of what will happen in the book from beginning setup to ending climax. The three-act structure also provides the proper pacing in my opinion.
Wow. You ROCK! (And I am once again otherwise speechless). What are you currently working on?
I just released a novella entitled FATED HEARTS, which explores the question of predestination. Here's the blurb:
EVE has always played by the rules, afraid to take chances. HOLDEN wants to change that. She's certain they've never met before…or have they? Holden seems so familiar, but who is he? What is he? Yesterday her biggest challenge was trying not to bomb on her SATs. Today, paranormal forces have transformed an ordinary high school dance into a test of fate vs. free will and loving Holden could be Eve's end.
*****I think Fated Hearts is FREE today for download at Amazon.com http://amzn.com/B006XVD53O
(Sarah butting in to say I just got my copy. That's freaking awesome — I don't usually get the free score as a hostess! LOL. Thank you so much!)
A sequel to Entanglements is also in the works. RESISTANCE takes up the story of a human freedom fighter who, along with her alchemist/vampire hero, must defeat an army of soul sucking golems. I expect to release the sequel in March of 2012.
I'm also finalizing another novella entitled THE BANSHEE AND THE LINEBACKER, which is the story of a teen who has a premonition of her boyfriend's death. How far will she go to change fate? Will she cheat on him with his brother to save his life? This story will be released in February of 2012.
WOW, that sounds intense! Can you email me personally when that comes out? Twit me? Somethin'? Okay, no one needs to see me beg. Let's take a closer look at ENTANGLEMENTS.

Teen KIZZY TAYLOR is just hoping for an evening of fun when she joins her friends in a spelunking expedition through an under-city tunnel. But fun turns bizarre when Kizzy accidentally opens a vortex and her stepsister is swept through to an evil alternate dimension. The only way to rescue her stepsister is to reopen the vortex and go in after her. But is her new boyfriend, ROM CALIXO, going to help Kizzy or try to stop her? And if she can get past Rom, will she be able to get back home?

Guest Blog: Muse Juice from R. Renee Vickers
SURRENDER? You'll beg for it. (But clicking the image is easier. Just sayin'.)
**Read all the way through to find out how you can win a copy of the sexy, sizzling SLY'S SURRENDER.**
(Contest closed. Congratulations to Niina, who scored her prize after getting the finger from random.org.)
Before I introduce Renee, I need to sneak in a little announcement, which is fine because you guys need to brace yourselves anyway. (Trust me. You just do.) It seems I forgot to announce my weekly giveaway winner over the weekend, and this week we have TWO. Why? Because last week's winner, Krystal Wade, was kind enough to throw her prize back into the pot since she already loves me. Is she awesome or what? So that said, congratulations to hjbmckenna(at)etc and nayjf(at)etc, random.org's nominees for the week. Check your email!
Now, on to the muse juice. Those of you wary of the catering probably missed Renee's earlier adventure here on the homefront, so you might want to check out her interview so you can fully appreciate her post. Oh, and comments there are NOT to be missed. It'll all sort of come together for you … and come to think of it, those of you eyeing the catering probably DO remember that. It's the rest of you chowing down on biscuits without a second thought as to what that secret sauce might be. Ahem. So without further ado (because I think I've adone plenty, lol), take a gander at Renee's Muse Juice. Renee, take it away!
Hi Sarah and friends! *waves*
Thanks for the invitation back! I had a lot of fun last time I was here, what a couple of months back now. If you don't remember me, that's alright. I can barely remember that long ago with all of the holidays and happenings between then and now. Last time I was here Sarah and I had a great time bantering back and forth in an interview that has probably been my favorite to date. I absolutely adore Sarah's sense of humor, so when she extended me an invite for a second visit I was thrilled.
One of the topics of conversation on my last visit was my odd blog name, the Muse Ampoule. Just as a refresher that was a penname I picked out to use in online writing communities. It came to me by accident. I had one of those moments where I had to have a catchy name that would help people remember who I was and my writing, so I popped open my Random House Word Menu and threw my finger down on a random page. I landed on Ampoule. An ampoule is a sealed glass vial typically used to hold medicinal solutions. I took a moment to think on it, trying to find some way to use this odd word in a penname and it came to me like a flash. What better medicine could there be for a writer than a Muse . . . or Muse Juice as Sarah pointed out last time.
It's been a great ice breaker. Most people can't resist asking me what the hell does it all mean. And how does one pronounce it (muse am-pool). Since then, I've been playfully known as Mrs. Muse, Musey, and my favorite Musey-Poo.
So today I'm here to talk about my Muse Juice, what inspires me, what cures my writerly woes. Some authors will go in great depth to talk about their muses, some going as far to say that they can't write without that special spark. Some say there are no such things as Muses. I believe in them and I count myself lucky to have not one but two muses. And though I'm able to write with or without their help, I find my most inspired work comes from a little external prodding on their end. But, there are days/weeks/months where I don't feel that extra something so I had to figure out a way to still function.
Like most do I find myself facing a block or a dry well from time to time, but rather than relying on feeling inspired, I gather up my notes for story ideas I had while my muses were upon me. Before I realized to save those ideas, I relied heavily on writing prompts or challenges by friends during my lows. And though they helped, those ideas felt more like meager rations rather than the full meal that being inspired provided.
So far my methods seem to be paying off. I have one published book, Sly's Surrender, which came as a challenge, but the parameters were loose enough to let me play. I was in between inspiration and needing a challenge when a friend of mine told me that he'd like to see how I'd do writing a M/F erotic romance piece, at least 3,000 words. Three thousand words turned into six and my first foray into romance took me to a place I had yet to consider, publication. When it was finished I submitted it to Noble Romance Publication and they were gracious enough to give it the green light. And, to my absolute surprise, it rose to #2 on Noble's Top Ten Best Seller's list in the first couple of weeks.
Blurb: By day Sly is a take-charge, no-nonsense restaurateur, and at night she plays her hand as a demanding mistress. Sly has everything her heart desires: a successful business with loyal patrons, a gorgeous boyfriend and a flair for dominating in the bedroom. Everything she's ever tried has gone her way, every decision followed to success, every goal achieved, and yet she yearns for more.
One night she decides to try something new, giving up her customary control to the tall, dark, and sexy Jake. Jake is put in a position to prove to his lover just what he's capable of, and Sly experiences the new pleasures to be found in letting someone else handle her reins.
Recently, I submitted for a project being headed by Ruby Green for her Lesbian vs Zombie project. I'm currently in the waiting process for that to see if it'll be accepted or not. (Fingers Crossed)
Blurb: Erin and Sarah have the opportunity of a lifetime, demonstrating a machine with seemingly limitless potential to tap into the power of the human mind. To the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts University of Technology, the girls' project is simply an avenue to further their personal gain and nothing more. During the demonstration, the arrogance of the powerful men proves to be their damnation when an accident they caused leads to unforeseen and terrifying results.
Now the two lovers must find a way to quell the plague their machine has unleashed, but to do so they first have to redefine their perceptions of what is real and possible. When science and magic meet, the line between horror and hope becomes very blurry.
And I'm in the process of wrapping up a short piece for J.S. Wayne's project Writing Out Child Abuse (WOCA). This project is for charities helping to bring awareness and funds to victims of Child Abuse. I have to admit with this project, more than being prompted with a challenge, I felt particularly inspired. Perhaps it was the cause or the topic, but I certainly felt my Muse whispering to me in this one and it's like nothing else I've written. This one is not a romantic piece, just the opposite, but that's not what is setting it apart from me. The characters and the method for delivery have a different feel than my previous two tales.
So now that you know a little about my Muse Juice, I'd like to hear about yours. What inspires you, what is the cure for your writerly woes? Everyone who leaves me their response with their email address will be entered to win a free copy of my e-book Sly's Surrender.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment! Sarah, thanks so much for having me back here!! : )
