Josiah Cromwell is back in Salem for only 1 thing, Anne. After the death of her brother, his father sen
An Unexpected Sin was a great story that took very little time for me to fall into the historical cadence. I was looking forward to this book because I was hoping to cleanse my reading palette with something a bit different and this book fit the bill perfectly.

In this novel, we get to meet Josiah and Anne as they come together after years of separation because of a tragic event that occurred when they were teenagers. When Josiah comes back to Salem, it’s in the midst of the Salem Witch Trials w

AN UNEXPECTED SIN is a well-written, American historical romance that provides chilling insight into the tumultuous times of the Salem Witch Trials. Amidst this backdrop, Ms. Ballance delivers a captivating tale of forbidden love, guilt and forgiveness and the mysterious past that shapes the hero's and heroine's path to love.

Anne Scudder has been in love with her brother's best friend, Josiah Cromwell, since they were children. As kids, Josiah would seek her attention with his endless teasing an

An Unexpected Sin caught my attention because it was different. Author Sarah Ballance instead of writing a book about Recency England, which is the "in" setting these days, stepped out of the box and chose Salem as her setting. Salem, during the Witch Trials, to be exact.

Ms. Ballance tells a love story in a time where any behavior that is considered different is suspect. Where being prettier, nicer, wealthier can be dangerous. All
This is my first historical romance set in the Colonial period - more specifically during the Salem witch trials. I always thought this was a very interesting period of time. Sarah Ballance managed to capture the time period perfectly for me. The accusations flying, innocent people accused, not defending anyone for fear you'd be named next. It was a very tense period in which to live. These issues all touched the story of Anne and Josiah in different ways - ways they could have been disasterous. ...more
The setting of this story is set during the famous witch hunts in Salem. At that time there was so much suspicion. Anne Scudder lives in a lodging Inn that her parents owned outside the outskirts of Salem. One day Anne got a big surprise. Anne cannot believe Josiah Cromwell came back to town. With the death of her brother, her life was altered forever. Her parents never the same. Josiah carried this guilt. He knows he might never be forgiven, but he wants to claim his love, Anne. Josiah wants to ...more

I enjoyed the more unique time period and setting for this historical romance. However I found it a bit frustrating how repetitively the concerns of the characters were stated, and yet so much of the conflict was built around them not voicing these concerns to the others. This also made the ending, where everything is finally aired feel too forced. But overall it was a fine read, I did especially enjoy the setting and the chemistry between the two main characters. I also appreciated that the her ...more

Really enjoyed this novel. Like the last book, I felt one or both characters made some silly decisions in the end, but easy to overlook as a minor problem. As a whole, I was really impressed by the story. I love the time setting. Also appreciated how the actions and language felt true to the time period. Even the smallest of details felt authentic. The background of this couple was more in tune with the tropes I traditionally adore (I've love you for years, forbidden love, first lover for both p ...more

An Unexpected Sin is a book that breaks new ground by reinventing the old into something new. A tale of forbidden love between a woman and her brother’s best friend, two tropes that have been used before but the difference is setting the book in a tumultuous period of American history. The Salem Witch Trails, a period that is rich with history which is not a common setting for historical romance novels. Something that I’m disappointed about a there so much

I keep trying historical romances because I have friends who swear by them but I don't know- I just can't get into them. Maybe it's the dialogue, maybe it's being chaste but wanting to really let go anyways, I don't know. One thing that did get me to stick with it was the secondary story line of witch craft in Colonial Salem, something that I've always found fascinating.

The story centers around Anne and Josiah. Anne loses her brother to a tragic incident years ago. Josiah, her brother's best fr

I received a complimentary copy of the book for an honest review.

I found the story quite simple in regards to the previous one of the series, it was a straightforward, uncomplicated and had a more light hearted tone which I think made it charming to me.

Josiah was honest and true to his feelings as well as Anne, which I found pretty refreshing since most stories are twice as lenghty as this one and the main characters are constantly denying their true emotions. However, since the beginning of the

Sarah Ballence did an excellent job of stepping outside of the box, and writing an engaging historical romance set in Salem during the height of the witch-trials, not a time or place that was well known for it's romantic atmosphere. In addition to setting the story during an interesting time period, she also managed to weave mystery into the plot.

When Anne first lays eyes on Josiah, she's instantly attracted to him. She also gets the sense that she know him from somewhere, though she can't figur

An Unexpected Sin, the second book in the Sins of Salem series, is set in the time of the Salem witch hunts and speaks to the bleakness of the time and the care each person had to take to avoid being unjustly accused of witchcraft. I like learning more about this time period, even though I find it upsetting at how little it took to be accused. The author’s research and attention to detail is very apparent.

Josiah has returned home, after six years, seeking his childhood friend, Anne. He’s loved h

Such a sweet, heart-breaking, and ultimately heart-WARMING story. And being that it is set during the Salem witch trials, with the examples of human treachery and evil those brought forth, such an endearing story was certainly unexpected. I am not ashamed to admit that I had *tears* in my eyes at the end.

Anne and Josiah were once very young and in love, until the tragic death of her brother tore them apart. When they are reunited 6 years later they are destined to pick up where their hearts lef

This love story of Anne and Josiah is poetically beautiful and tender. Set in the time of the Salem witch trials, these two have been separated by the death of Anne’s brother. After six years, Josiah returns to Salem to find Anne – the woman he’s realized that he cannot live without. When Anne discovers that Josiah has returned, her heart starts beating again and she’s desperate for him. But things are tricky for the two of them, as any strange behavior is suspicious and can cost them their live ...more
An Unexpected Sin was a sweet, young love story set in one of the eras in American history that we are ashamed of -- the witch trials in Salem, MA.

Josiah Cromwell has returned to Salem after years away, following the death of his best friend, Samuel, brother of Anne. Fraught with guilt for young Samuel's death and packed off to school, Josiah dreams of being reunited with Anne, Samuel's younger sister whom Josiah fell in love with.

Anne sorely missed Josiah after he left when her brother died.

Another great read by Sarah Ballance. This is book two of The Salem Series and can be read as a stand alone. Anne and Josiah were teens in love when Josiah was forced to leave by his father, leaving behind Anne who was devastated to have just lost her brother - Josiah's best friend. 6 years later Josiah returns.

Emotions run deep with these two. Their love goes through a roller coaster ride leaving you breathless. This is a multi pov read (the best kind in my opinion hehe) and did not disappoint.

An Unexpected Sin is a young love romance set in and around Salem at the time of the burnings of witches by the Puritans. It's the story of Anne Scudder and Josiah Cromwell, who had been infatuated with each other from a young age, then struck by a common tragedy and separated, and reunited six years later as Anne became of marriageable age.

The plot kept me engaged from beginning to end as their passion was rekindled and faced obstacles to being together. Anne had a strong and feisty personality

I really enjoyed the relationship between Anne and Josiah! They have many obstacles to overcome, mainly Josiah's own issues and Anne's family issues.
They have that forever love that always makes for a nice read. :)
They were sweet in my opinion, especially the way that Josiah is with Anne. She is daring and one of a kind.
I liked the secondary characters as well. I hope that Prudence gets a story with the man that I think will be popping up. ;)

Another amazing addition to this series. A second chance romance that has to overcome lies and deciet.
Anne and Josiah fell in love at a young age, Josiah had to leave town but 6 years later comes back to redeam himself and reclaim the love of his life.
Again we take a mildly known historical event and give it life. Ms. Ballance has done a fantastic job of bringing history and the puritan ways to life. Well done!

I've read book three, hoping to see a book for as I love the characters

The history is wobbly on the part of the reaction of the parents. Predictable "caught in a storm" union. The pregnant woman travels more than Mary on the way to Bethlehem.
