Terrible neighbors, saucy beaches, and CAKE!

Hello, and happy July!

How are you? I'm good. Well, to be honest, I've been all over the place, juggling several projects that are all inspiring me to the point of distraction. It's a good problem to have, I think. Last month, I was literally all over the place: Los Angeles, Monterey and Chicago. Despite all the hub-bub, I did manage to make a few new comic-type things that will hopefully entertain:

A new Rumpus comic about this one time I was a terrible neighbor (sigh).

A short piece about the time I inadvertently took photos at the saucier side of Baker Beach--whoops!

An oldie (2009) but goody about internet dating and disillusionment.

My illustrated diary for Chicago/CAKE.

In a couple of weeks, I'll be at the Galapagos Islands. Maybe I'll even make a comic about it. After I get back, I'm having a small solo art show at the cutest little bicycle shop you've ever seen. I've got all new gouache painting-drawings of dogs and a cat and a pig, and the reception is the day after my birthday! Please come by and say hello. There will be prosecco, and there may be party hats.

August 3, 6pm - 8pm
Cykel SF, 548 Union Street, San Francisco

Here's the Facebook event page if you'd be so kind as to RSVP.

Also, a story from Kiss & Tell has been reprinted in this exciting new Fantagraphics anthology edited by Justin Hall!

Thanks for reading, and here's a little something from my upcoming art show:
Ono Puddle 1

Love,
Mari

Comics, Art...and CAKE!

Is it warm where you are? Because sitting here in my home office, my AC is going full blast, and even so a thick heat is seeping into the room like pudding, making it difficult to concentrate. But it's okay! Because now is the time for fresh strawberries (ripening on the balcony) and shorts with sandals, and maybe a visit to the roof later to treasure that cool breeze drifting up from the bay.

But this is not why I'm writing this. Why am I writing this? Oh yeah, COMICS and ART! And holy smokes, I have so many new comics to share with you! And a couple fun events, so here goes:

COMICS:
Note: If you enjoy reading these, please do leave comments on the site and/or share the links with friends. That's the sort of thing that makes doing this worthwhile, and I very much appreciate even the littlest hello.

On theRumpus.net:

Smoke In Your Eyes ~ Independence Day
This is a short comic I made about a magical evening I had on a beach in the late-eighties.
http://therumpus.net/2012/06/smoke-in-your-eyes-independence-day/

My interview with cartoonist legend Alison Bechdel
This is a long-ish interview, some of it illustrated. Read to the end to see me make a fool out of myself. A fool!
http://therumpus.net/2012/05/the-rumpus-interview-with-alison-bechdel/

On SFBay.ca:

Taking a walk at Bernal Heights Park ~ Thinking about old and new friends
http://sfbay.ca/2012/06/12/bernal-heights-park/

Ladies' Night Out at Hillstone Embarcadero ~ restaurant review
http://sfbay.ca/2012/05/29/hillstone-embarcadero/

My day at the de Young Museum ~ I worked really hard at these drawings!
http://sfbay.ca/2012/05/15/de-young-museum/

EVENTS:

June 16 & 17, Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE), Chicago, IL
If you're in the Chicago area, that's exactly where I'm going to be this weekend, for CAKE at Columbia College's Ludington Building, 1104 S. Wabash, Chicago, IL
http://www.cakechicago.com/
On Sunday at 5 p.m. I'll be speaking on a panel about the Ladydrawers, who I did some illustrations for and who are raising awareness about gender in/equality in the industry. We'll be on the 8th floor of the Ludington Building.

August 3, Cykel SF, 548 Union Street, San Francisco, CA
Cute things post-birthday art show!
The day after my birthday, I'll be having a little art show at a bicycle shop in North Beach. These guys are the best, and they have the sweetest little bulldog, Zoe. I've made some animal art for the show, featuring Zoe, my dog Yoko Ono, and other cuties. Yeah, that's right, I'm getting soft in my old age, so what? I'm guessing it'll go from 6-8, but it might go later. I'll say more as we get closer to August, but for now, save the date!

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you soon!

So much to do, not enough time to draw!

Hi there!

I've had a pretty crazy month, and I want to share all my craziness with you. Doesn't that sound fun?

1. RIGHT NOW!
2. New Illustrated Journals
3. New Comics
4. Upcoming Events

1. RIGHT NOW!

TONIGHT (Thursday 5/10) I'll be participating in a trunk show at a San Francisco wine bar, The Pour House (1327 Polk St., between Pine & Bush). I'll be there from 6 pm to 8 pm attempting to sell zines and art. If you're around, please come by and say hello.

A Snail Mail Miracle
Did you ever have pen pals? Once upon a time, I used to write to other kids in these pen pal programs, with friends in England, France, Minnesota, Montana...As a kid, all those places sounded equally exotic to me, and to be honest, they kind of still do. Every letter I got was like a gift from the stars--I always wanted to open them elegantly with a letter opener or knife, but I was never able to keep it together. Each of those letters sits in a box in my bedroom, contained in its raggedly torn envelope--proof that I've never had much patience.

Well, the thing is, I wrote/drew a letter for The Rumpus's Letters In the Mail. If you recently met me at MoCCA or TCAF, I might have handed you a letter with your purchase so you already know about this. If not, you can read about it here:
http://therumpus.net/2012/05/this-weeks-letter-2/
Aside from the few I printed up to spontaneously hand out, this letter will NOT be available in published form in the future--you can only get it by subscribing (and they're sending it out this week, so you need to sign up soon!). If you love getting real, honest-to-goodness letters in the mail, then you will love this super-awesome program. For a small fee, the Rumpus mails you a letter almost every week from a whole bevvy of writers, such as Stephen Elliot, Margaret Cho, Janet Fitch, Jonathan Ames...and me!

2. NEW ILLUSTRATED JOURNALS

I've done a lot of traveling for conventions in the past month, which means I've been journaling about it all, and that means YOU can read about my trips in my illustrated journals. They're not drawn very well, and they're not planned out meticulously with story arcs or metaphors, but sometimes they're funny, sometimes they're dramatic, and often they're TMI (sorry). Take a look if you dare:

Columbus, Ohio (SPACE)
http://marinaomi.com/space2012.html

New York, NY (MoCCA Fest) and Toronto, ON (TCAF) - I started adding a lot of color in this one!

3. NEW COMICS

In addition to plugging away at my next graphic memoir (it's about how, at age 22, I decided I wanted to be more Japanese, so I moved to Tokyo and became a bar hostess), I've been doing a whole lot more. There's just not enough time to draw, and drawing's pretty much all I do! What's up with that? I have so many stories I want to tell you. For now, here's what I have for you:

The Rumpus . net
A new Rumpus comic about a guy I used to know (warning: it's a pretty sad comic):
http://therumpus.net/2012/05/smoke-in-your-eyes-inner-beauty/

SF Bay . CA
Comics about my favorite SF haunts at SFBay.ca (I do these every two weeks--check out the one about my dentist, who I love):
http://sfbay.ca/category/marinaomi/

Little Heart
I wrote/drew a comic about when I proposed to Gary for the marriage equality comic, Little Heart, which just debuted at TCAF. This book is stunning--although I'm super proud about my submission to this book, there are others that truly humble me. It's one of the most beautiful anthologies I've seen in a long time, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. And it's for a good cause! Pre-order a copy of Little Heart here:
http://2dcloud.blogspot.com/p/previews.html

4. UPCOMING EVENTS

An exciting week of love!

Helloooo, and happy almost-Valentine's day!

I know lots of people hate V-day, and even though I like to think of myself as the kind of rebel who would go against such a mainstream thing (I've never been a fan of required fun--or required anything!), I kind of love having a day set aside to tell your loved ones you love them. Why does it have to be about romantic love? Or consumerism per se? Why not cut out paper hearts for your friends, family and lovers like we all did in grade school and hide them in each other's pockets?

With that said, here is a brand-new comic about love on the Rumpus:
http://therumpus.net/2012/02/smoke-in-your-eyes-leather-jacket/

TONIGHT (Monday 2/13)
If you're in SF tonight, I'm going to be doing a reading (with a lot of other writers who are probably much better at reading than I am) of my favorite cringe-inducing erotica at the Make-out Room. I'm going on first, and I'll be reading a beautifully written, kind-of-nasty story by Anais Nin. I will attempt to not blush. Other readers include Daphne Gottlieb, Justin Chin, Kirk Read and Michelle Tea. Emceed by my fellow Five True Fans buddy, Cassie J. Sneider.
Here are details: https://www.facebook.com/events/335207576519165/

THURSDAY 2/16
This Thursday I'll be at the Asian Art Museum at their monthly adults-only party, Matcha. The theme is sensuality, and I'll have a whole hour to dazzle you with some visual readings. There will also be fragrance-makers, tea tastings, ASIAN ART, and lots of amazing things that you don't want to miss. Believe me! The events starts at 5 but I go on at 7.
Here are details: https://www.facebook.com/events/308013555911167/

FRIDAY 2/17
If you're in the publishing industry, you probably know about the SF Writer's Conference that will be going on all weekend. The legendary Trina Robbins (comics herstorian) and I will be there, giving a presentation about women in graphic novels, plus I'll be doing a short reading. We go on at 2 pm. I'm not sure if this is open to the public, but you can find out about it here: http://www.sfwriters.org/

SATURDAY 2/18
I'll be driving to Los Angeles on Saturday morning, and joining a comics reading in the evening. There's some amazing talent on this roster, so if you're in the Los Angeles area and you want to be entertained Saturday night, this is the place to do it!
https://www.facebook.com/events/354998781184446/

SUNDAY 2/19
Los Angeles Zine Fest! I'll be tabling with the brilliant Gabby Gamboa. Here's another link that you can't live without: http://lazinefest.com/

MARRIAGE EQUALITY ANTHOLOGY
I made a comic about proposing to my husband, and it's going to appear in this anthology about marriage equality. At least, once they get enough funds to kickstart the project. Here is a link to their Kickstarter page, where you can preorder a copy of the book, plus get fun little arty treats if you donate more money to the cause (and it's a good cause!):
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/765505753/little-heart-a-comic-anthology-for-marriage-equali

Okay, that's all I have today. What an exciting week this will be!

Love,
Mari

Roger and Me

Roger and Me, originally uploaded by marinaomi.

Here's a photo of me and Roger Taylor of the pop band Duran Duran, in September 2005. Man, my haircut sucked back then! I wrote and illustrated a comic about partying with these guys, and how frikkin' weird it was to meet my tween idols twenty years later. Here's a link for your reading enjoyment: http://www.therumpus.net/2011/12/smoke-in-your-eyes-heartthrobs/
