At the time, when I decided to get to know my Japanese side via working at hostess bars, I consoled a small part of my brain (the small, scared part) with the idea that if worse came to worst I could someday write about it. But by the time I was in the thick of it, I found the whole thing so tedious that writing about it was the last thing I wanted to do. It took another 10-15 years before I could look back on it as something of interest, and see how everything fit together as part of a larger narrative. Perspective is key when writing memoir!(less)

Hi!

Just a quick note that I've started making diary comics! I've been posting them daily for the past couple weeks over at Patreon. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

It's been really fun recording the most interesting parts of each day, and I hope to keep doing this for awhile. It's my new favorite morning ritual, right before my morning run. (I highly recommend you try it if you've g... Read more of this blog post »

"MariNaomi has become my literary equivalent to Wes Anderson. His films have this unique power to make me smile, laugh, and cry like none other. Also, the keyword there is unique and that's what Mari's books have felt to me thus far...unique!

Turning Japanese by MariNaomi
"An excellent read!

I ordered this immediately after completing "Kiss & Tell" as I very much enjoyed that graphic memoir. Also, in-between I'd listened to an interview she done on a podcast discussing this book which made me anticipate my readin..." Read more of this review »

The End of the End of the Earth by Jonathan Franzen
"Sigh. Franzen can write. He is intelligent. His nonfiction is just not my cup of tea. There is an authorial distance I find offputting but I understand why he might write with that distance. As a whole, the collection is uneven. There is a set of..." Read more of this review »
Fingers of Fear by J.U. Nicolson
"This Old Dark House tale was originally published back in the 1930's and clocks in at only 213 pages, but it was still a chore for me to get through. It starts out promisingly, with all the right ingredients in place for a good old fashioned scare..." Read more of this review »
