Hi there!
Congratulations to the winner of my January avatar contest: Ramon Solis!
For the rest of you who participated, thank you for entering! I was so happy with the results of this contest, maybe I’ll do it again sometime. But in the meantime…
For the next couple months, I’m having a HUGE (75% off) art sale. Details are here.
Also, here are some new comics to read:

Said While Talking episode 3: A Waking Death
Yosiell an I contemplate whether it’s better to die awake or in your sleep.
Said While Talking episode 4: Scent of a Hippy

And:
What would I be like if I had a penis?

It's time to relaaaax and draw.
Hello, friend!
I am happy to announce that my year-long run of cons, voracious traveling and public presentations is finally OVER. I have no more readings scheduled until next year, no more standing at tables until my feet are numb, no more hemorrhaging money, no more flying on planes, no more rental cars and keeping my liquids in a little baggie. Hooray for sitting still and drawing for a while!
Since my last newsletter, I did a bunch of readings (including at the infamous City Lights to celebrate the release of the Sister Spit anthology!), went on a week-long family whirlwind trip to Japan (ate amazing food, appeased grumpy tempers, watched my sister get bit by a deer), taught a workshop at CIIS (I actually really enjoyed teaching—who knew?), made my very first music video (for Terese Taylor—I’ll post it next month, after it finds a home on the internet), finished some comics that will appear in printed books in 2013 (a sexy, full-color, sixteen-page story for Rob Kirby’s anthology THREE, and a six-pager for the next HENRY & GLENN FOREVER), and did some illustrations for Stephen Elliott’s HAPPY BABY. Despite all the traveling and teaching, this has definitely been one of my more productive months. So why do I still feel like it’s not enough?
Hm…
Okay, to divert from this existential dilemma, I’m just going to give you the good stuff and shut my yap.

Good-bye, blue skies!
And festivities seem to come with the cool weather! Tonight, for example, is the opening of a sexy art show that I’ve got something special in: eight (of sixteen) watercolored pages depicting a threesome I had with a couple of lovely ladies once upon a time. I’ll be donning my new favorite glamorous dress, and I hope you can join me.
Then on Sunday I’ll be reading at this Litquake event at the Jewish Contemporary Museum.I was excited to read that it was a pick on SF Weekly!
I’ve also got a couple Sister Spit readings coming up, including a book release party at City Lights!!!! You can get details on my website.
And now for some NEW COMICS!Smoke In Your Eyes – What’s New, Pussycat?Frisco al Fresco – Coit Tower StepsFrisco al Fresco – Double RainbowFrisco al Fresco – Fort Funston
And art:Here’s a commission I did of a dog named Floyd with his favorite toyYes, I do commissions, when my deadlines allow for it. Let me know if you want me to draw your cat or something.
And here’s a photo I took of my husband and my dog in the Richmond. Thanks for reading, and wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, I hope that today brings a smile to your face.
Do you need a little help?
How about this:
FART!
You’re welcome.

So many comics, so little time
I hope this summer is treating you well, that you're safe from disasters, natural or not. Me, I've been extra-super busy with work work work. I know, everybody is, aren't they? If I didn't have my beloved pup, I doubt I'd ever leave my office. Like, ever. At bedtime, I strain to uncurl my fingers from the semi-permanent brush-holding pose they freeze into, and drift off to dream about working some more. A friend suggested that maybe I should take it easy, step away from the desk, stop canceling social engagements and give my brain a break, but there's this deep-seated fear I have, that one day my drawing arm will become incapacitated--perhaps I'll lose a finger in an industrial accident, or perhaps my whole hand. I have been known to be rather clumsy, so it's not that much of a stretch. And what then? I need to get as much out of my brain and onto the page as I can, while I still can. Is that nuts? Do all artists share that same fear? Because it's true. One day my drawing arm will be incapacitated, either by accident, arthritis, carpal tunnel or death. And then I'll need to find something else to occupy my time...With that said, I have a number of things to share with you today that I hope you'll enjoy, the fruit of my labor.
* THE RUMPUS - HAVE A NICE DAYThis is a short piece about a man in my neighborhood who was the victim of a violent hit-and-run. I feel odd calling stories like this "comics," although admittedly there's a panel in it that makes me laugh.
* FRISCO AL FRESCO - THE HILLS OF SFMore lighthearted is this short comic I did about my experience with a certain dog's poop.
* FRISCO AL FRESCO - THE WALDO GRADE TUNNELAnd another short, about Marin County's rainbow tunnel, which I've spent over three decades driving through (making a wish every time).
* THE COMICS JOURNAL - GALAPAGOS ISLANDSThis past week, The Comics Journal has been running five days' worth of my journal pages from my trip to South America. Someday, when the deadlines thin out, I plan on turning the entire (ten-day) trip into a book or a zine. But that won't be for a while.Day 1, traveling Day 2, Quito, Ecuador Day 3, Baltra, Galapagos Day 4, Santiago and Rabida, Galapagos Day 5, Isabela, Galapagos
* FIVE TRUE FANS - THEM'S THE BREAKS, KIDI am very proud to announce the release of the anthology by the mini-collective I'm a part of, Five True Fans. One of our members, the talented Tessa Brunton, has been nominated for two Ignatz awards this year, for her book, Passages (Sparkplug Books)! Yay Tessa! And I think what's in the pages of this anthology is some of her best work ever, so you should definitely take a look. Read about it here (and maybe place an order?). (Note: Both Tessa and Ric will be at the San Francisco Zine Fest this weekend, selling this zine and others. Visit them if you can!)
* SPXIf you're going to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland (Sept. 15 and 16), please come by my table and say hello! I'll be there with my friend, mentor and hero, Robert Kirby, who is the maker of excellent comics, some of which inspired me to start making comics myself in the mid-nineties. I'll be selling my book, as well as copies of the anthology. Details are here.
* SOLO ART SHOW AT CYKEL
Have you had a chance to check out the art I have up at Cykel? If not, don't fear! The show will be up until September 30. I'll also be doing a book signing during the North Beach ArtWalk on September 22 and 23, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here is what the art looks like (and it looks way better in person, so get over there if you can!).
* TUMBLR BLOGLastly, if you want up-to-the-moment info about what I'm doing, feel free to check in on my Tumblr blog every once in a while, where I post bits and pieces, comics, works in progress, and the occasional photo of my animal menagerie:Well that about does it for now. Have a great weekend, and keep in touch!

I just got back from Ecuador last evening, where I took an amazing tour of the Galapagos Islands. It was such a gorgeous place, and my god--the blue-footed boobies made my heart explode! I'm thinking of doing a zine/comic journal about it. Someday.
But for now:
My new Rumpus comic came out yesterday, about a girl I wanted to beat up.Smoke In Your Eyes: Kick-Ass Boots
This cute, very San Francisco thing happened recently:Frisco al Fresco: Saints Peter and Paul Church
Here's a little something I doodled about feminism:
Fem-i-nist, Adjective
I've been doing diary comics lately. Here's one to get you started, and follow the links at the bottom of the page to see more.
Also: FRIDAY evening (8/3) I'm having a little solo art show/birthday hurrah, from 6 pm to 8 pm. And since I'm still on island time, chances are I'll fall asleep at 8:15.Cykel, 548 Union Street, San FranciscoPlease come by and say hello! There may be party hats.
Love,
Mari
