So many comics, so little time

Hello hello!

I hope this summer is treating you well, that you're safe from disasters, natural or not. Me, I've been extra-super busy with work work work. I know, everybody is, aren't they? If I didn't have my beloved pup, I doubt I'd ever leave my office. Like, ever. At bedtime, I strain to uncurl my fingers from the semi-permanent brush-holding pose they freeze into, and drift off to dream about working some more. A friend suggested that maybe I should take it easy, step away from the desk, stop canceling social engagements and give my brain a break, but there's this deep-seated fear I have, that one day my drawing arm will become incapacitated--perhaps I'll lose a finger in an industrial accident, or perhaps my whole hand. I have been known to be rather clumsy, so it's not that much of a stretch. And what then? I need to get as much out of my brain and onto the page as I can, while I still can. Is that nuts? Do all artists share that same fear? Because it's true. One day my drawing arm will be incapacitated, either by accident, arthritis, carpal tunnel or death. And then I'll need to find something else to occupy my time...With that said, I have a number of things to share with you today that I hope you'll enjoy, the fruit of my labor.

* THE RUMPUS - HAVE A NICE DAYThis is a short piece about a man in my neighborhood who was the victim of a violent hit-and-run. I feel odd calling stories like this "comics," although admittedly there's a panel in it that makes me laugh.

* FRISCO AL FRESCO - THE HILLS OF SFMore lighthearted is this short comic I did about my experience with a certain dog's poop.

* FRISCO AL FRESCO - THE WALDO GRADE TUNNELAnd another short, about Marin County's rainbow tunnel, which I've spent over three decades driving through (making a wish every time).

* THE COMICS JOURNAL - GALAPAGOS ISLANDSThis past week, The Comics Journal has been running five days' worth of my journal pages from my trip to South America. Someday, when the deadlines thin out, I plan on turning the entire (ten-day) trip into a book or a zine. But that won't be for a while.Day 1, traveling Day 2, Quito, Ecuador Day 3, Baltra, Galapagos Day 4, Santiago and Rabida, Galapagos Day 5, Isabela, Galapagos

* FIVE TRUE FANS - THEM'S THE BREAKS, KIDI am very proud to announce the release of the anthology by the mini-collective I'm a part of, Five True Fans. One of our members, the talented Tessa Brunton, has been nominated for two Ignatz awards this year, for her book, Passages (Sparkplug Books)! Yay Tessa! And I think what's in the pages of this anthology is some of her best work ever, so you should definitely take a look. Read about it here (and maybe place an order?). (Note: Both Tessa and Ric will be at the San Francisco Zine Fest this weekend, selling this zine and others. Visit them if you can!)

* SPXIf you're going to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland (Sept. 15 and 16), please come by my table and say hello! I'll be there with my friend, mentor and hero, Robert Kirby, who is the maker of excellent comics, some of which inspired me to start making comics myself in the mid-nineties. I'll be selling my book, as well as copies of the anthology. Details are here.
* SOLO ART SHOW AT CYKEL
Have you had a chance to check out the art I have up at Cykel? If not, don't fear! The show will be up until September 30. I'll also be doing a book signing during the North Beach ArtWalk on September 22 and 23, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here is what the art looks like (and it looks way better in person, so get over there if you can!).
* TUMBLR BLOGLastly, if you want up-to-the-moment info about what I'm doing, feel free to check in on my Tumblr blog every once in a while, where I post bits and pieces, comics, works in progress, and the occasional photo of my animal menagerie:Well that about does it for now. Have a great weekend, and keep in touch!
Love,MariNaomi
