Dark Drink launch date—July 7, 2022!!

I am ecstatic to announce my third novel will launch July 7, 2022!!!
Dark Drink is a psychological thriller.
Every single beta reader has reported having nightmares. Every. Single. One.

Sorry. Not Sorry. 🙂
Here’s the current blurb and a very TEMP cover. We’ll get a cover reveal and marketing rolled out shortly.

Dark Drink

Jude and Mercedez have kept deadly secrets from each other.

Jackson’s suicide haunts Jude. She burned all evidence of her brother’s depravity. One less monster in the world, right? Tech-savvy Mercedez is the last living witness to a teenage amateur horror film that ended with a gruesome death. She never told.

A viral video (thanks, Whiskers) brings internet fame—forcing flip-phone wielding Jude to choose between her job as the second female in the VP motorcycle motorcade or her mixologist hobby.

Global visibility brings naked vulnerability—someone has subscribed to Jude’s channel.

Missing neighbors found dead in side-by-side freezers, viral drunk “I quit” videos, spammed porn magazine subscriptions, snail mail severed fingers, sabotaged cave trips, cryptic social media comments, and stalking photos push the codependent friends over the edge (literally, off the side of a bluff) when best friends find out that secrets can kill.

The publishing landscape — I found a map!

I love maps. Maps of hiking trails. Maps of caves. Google Earth. I like to see how big things fit together. Lately, I’ve asked myself—is there a map to the publishing landscape?

The industry is always in flux. There are many myths, misunderstandings, and assumptions. I found this wonderful guide to understanding the publishing industry as it stands today. I want to share with you—or anyone who will listen to me, even just barely—what I’ve found.

The PDF that you see below shows an outline of the Key Book Publishing Paths. I love it. You can download it here: janefriedman.com/key-book-publishing-path/ Created by Jane Friedman, who is my new hero.

The Key Book Publishing Paths: 2021–2022

I’ve read this and re-read it trying to see where I’ve been fitting in with my books. Small press, Assisted, and Hybrid publishing is a lawless land. Every publisher has a different take on how to do it, what they represent to the author on how they do it, and what they actually do. To that, it depends on what type of author you are as to what you need from your publisher. So researching and understanding the lay of the land is paramount.

This past month I’ve spoken with DIY authors who own all of their rights and show up everywhere with a table, a stack of their books, and an effervescent smile. I’ve published with a small press and with a big publisher (textbooks), done the DIY path, and have stuck my toe in the water with securing an agent.

This chart is helping me, and I hope it will help you too. What do you want from your publisher? What do you want for your writing career? I’ll post more as I think on these things.

warmly,

…tina

Meet Tina O’Hailey – An Author!

What a nice hug to receive today from my friend and fellow author Joseph Lewis. Here’s a fun interview about my writing.

jrlewis85's Blog

I met Tina through my publisher, Black Rose Writing. We appeared together on a podcast, and we’ve struck a friendship ever since. Having read two of her books, she is witty, has a gift for placing words together in just the right way in the right moment. She has a knack for setting and atmosphere- two separate elements in writing that I will tackle in my next post.

I’ve read both Absolute Darkness and When Darkness Begins. Both are amazing and made me sit back and think for hours. After reading both, I found myself wondering if I would ever be that good!

Tina is a professor by day and a writer by night. In between and as much as she can, Tina explores caves. She has a wonderful sense of humor that oozes out of her writing- yes, even in her dark thriller material. And I am absolutely…

Dark Drink goes Alpha

temp cover -royalty free art Temp cover, so I see it on my Kindle. Royalty free art from (dreamstime.com)

A handful of trusted alpha readers have the manuscript for a Dark Drink in their ereader this week. I feel naked. Exposed. Apologetic for the monsters I have captured within the pages. But curiously watch to see if the readers shiver.

I have a little more editing to do – to make sure each chapter hits with a bang. The story is there, and the destruction that goes with it.

I’ll send this one through Pitch Wars in June, to see what that experience is like. (https://pitchwars.org/pitmad/) This manuscript is from #nanowrimo2019.

No time travel in this one. No fantasy. Just normal suburbian life. There are caves. And motorcycles. And monsters.
To find monsters, you need look no further than down the linoleum hall.

Rig it Right – chapter 3 Answer

This is to answer the following reader question for Chapter 3:

“I’m stuck on chapter 3 connecting the bend2 via the node editor. I can’t find a node for bend2, just one called “nonlinear” that seems to match it, but the relevant controls aren’t there (I’m very new to the node editor)”

I hope I can answer this and get you clicking in the right direction. In the picture above, I’ve downloaded the chpt3_Toothbrush_InProgress file. I’m looking for the bend 2.

Click on the toothbrush since it has the bend deformer applied. We can see the applied deformers in the channel box under the Shapes area. If nothing shows up here — the deformers haven’t been applied. If you see the desired bend2 node there, then you can click on the name. This selects it.In the node editor click on the “Add Selected Nodes to Graph” buttonThere is the bend 2 node. Not shown – if you select that node you’ll see it’s attributes in the channel’s box. Also if you hit “4” on the keyboard the node will open up and show the attributes too.

Best of luck and Happy Rigging!

Remember your first kiss?

Remember your first kiss? When you nailed that interview and received a job offer? The involuntary squeal as the roller coaster spun upside down?

All of that and more when you actually see your book on the shelf at Barnes & Noble. And then—

You see they have two of your books. Wow.
I autographed them both. B&N gave me stickers to put on the books.

It’s my first time back out to the book store and the mall since March. And what a great first trip out! I was tempted to do a facebook live video, or a selfie, or any numerous things to share that moment of finding the book. Yet, I selfishly kept that few minutes to myself. I earned that one. It was a very good moment.

Hugs.
