Heinlein and my name in the same paragraph = Cloud Nine!!!
“The way [Tina O’Hailey] treated time… reminded me of Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein.” “Absolute Darkness gave me the science fiction feel I was looking for.” “I would gladly recommend this book to fellow sci-fi/fantasy aficionados.”

That was the reply I received when I asked for a serious critique on the time travel aspect of Absolute Darkness from reviewer JD DeHart, who had given a five star review on Net Galley. (Quote and review used with his permission.)
Humbling.
It’s been nearly 30 years since I voraciously read all of Heinlein, Varley, Asimov and others I can’t remember unless I’m in front of the book case in TN. I wonder what influence they had on this book? I might have to re-read to find out.
A very kind review and quote that has me on cloud nine. Super sweet and I could only dream of being in the same league. I did a quick interview for JD’s blog:

Absolute Darkness is no longer available on Net Galley. It is still available on Edelweiss where reviewers can request a copy:

Is Alexander a vam…..?
…vampire? I left the question unanswered in the book description of Absolute Darkness purposefully. Most of the reviews left the question unanswered and only hinted at the nature of Alexander by calling him and his nemesis Yindi “a great change from the regular paranormal characters”, “very different from the normal books in this genre”, “a fine mix of the supernatural and real world elements”, “unique paranormal”, etc. Yet no one actually has called out Alexander for what he is.
Alexander is a vampire.
Better put, he could be mistaken for a vampire. I don’t have a name for his species yet. In the prequel (currently being written) you will find out his origin story and learn more about his relationship with Yindi, the energy being that keeps trying to destroy the universe. Also, you’ll find out why Alexander has a thing for linears (what you and I are – those who must experience time linearly).
This five star review finally called Alexander out: “I love when storytellers go “all in” on a genre. In other words, they “go deep” and commit to a specific audience without a superficial need to attract the mainstream. O’Hailey does this and that is what I really loved about this book. If you’re into vampires and your tastes lean towards the quantum or even the metaphysical in terms of story premise, this book is for you. O’Hailey reveals a unique story-world that definitely has potential for more novels and her take on the “vampire” is unique.”
When I found the character Alexander – he literally appeared onto the page as a near-crazed, time-shifting being who was feeling the collapse of time across the universe as he ignored his duty of saving said universe from destruction. You can read more about his origin here (https://thescaryreviews.com/2018/07/03/guest-post-by-tina-ohailey/) and how I fought against writing about how Alexander fell in love with my main character Brandy. (https://dashfan81.blogspot.com/2018/06/blog-tour-absolute-darkness-30618.html)
Alexander and his species are detached from time and can shift in and out of time somewhat easily after they come of age. They do need a certain type of food that can only be acquired when experiencing time and from those that are part of time (linears). Alexander has a soft spot for linears. You get a small glimpse of his past as he walks through his home to realize that Brandy is not his first linear love.
The prequel will explain where that need to save linears comes from. But the concept of being a vampire is not the heart of the book. He just happens to be someone you could think of as a vampire. I would say that my strongest influences for Alexander would be the character St. Germaine by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. I read many of those books as a 18 year old and favored that type of vampire: a “cultured, well-traveled, articulate, elegant, and mysterious” vampire [http://www.chelseaquinnyarbro.net/saint-germain.html] vs the blood, lusty vampires of Anne Rice. Though I read all of her works as well and enjoyed them. Yet, St. Germaine has a special place in my heart.
If I were casting a movie with either St. Germaine or Alexander they would probably be played by the same person. And it would not be Tom Cruise. (I like him in other roles, but not for this vampire.) Read this character interview if you wonder who that would be. https://www.dlieber.com/single-post/2018/06/08/Tina-OHailey-Character-Interview
If you haven’t read the book yet, you can get your copy here:

Please leave a review when you finish the book. That helps an indie author making it into the Amazon marketing algorithm.

Librarians, your patrons need excitement.
*Absolute Darkness isn’t actually in the library of congress. I achieved a life goal last week and was able to spend an afternoon doing research there. HAPPY BOOK NERD am I!*
Absolute Darkness is available for request on both:
Edelweiss (https://tinyurl.com/ycgtu6yl)
and
NetGalley ( https://tinyurl.com/y7dmurgx).
Excerpts and author interviews are listed here: https://coffeediem.wordpress.com/interviews-excerpts/
#Librarians Don’t miss this thrill ride! A twisted tale through time that will make you hold your breath.
Sitting by the campfire, Brandy admitted a secret to her friends. She swore she saw a ghost when exiting a cave earlier that day. Was she seeing things? Did they believe her? The next day, breaking a cardinal rule, she snuck back to the cave alone. No one knew where she was. What if she fell or was trapped? There would be no rescue.
For ten thousand years Alexander had kept the time streams of this universe safe from an eternal destructive force that continually threatened to tamper and destroy all. Locked in an unremitting battle, the two foes become sidetracked by an unexpected visitor. An entangled journey begins with chilling twists and turns until becoming locked into an inescapable death in a submerged cave.
Who will come out of the watery depths alive?
“…the author has really put a lot of thought into how the time theme would work and she has managed to do it in such a way that it was understandable.” “It is a paranormal, time dimensional, friendship and love story, it was an intriguing and very interesting read, one I would recommend to other readers.”
–@yvonnembee, Me and My Books (vonnibee.wordpress.com)
“Tina has borrowed bits of myth and made characters and a world that is truly her own… Throughout the book you feel like something is coming, something big – it just keeps building and building to its ultimate crescendo.”
–@purplekizz, Over the Rainbow (overtherainbowbookblog.wordpress.com)
“…couldn’t help but hold my breath during some of the incredibly tense cave diving scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed Absolute Darkness, it’s a fresh and intense read with a fine mix of the supernatural and real world elements. The idea of other beings able to manipulate the time stream of our lives is one with so much potential for further books and I’d love to see this world expanded upon”

7 Ways to Help the Author in your Life
I couldn’t have said it any better myself. Look at Hannah’s book. Could it look any more delicious? She’s not kidding: cats and baked goods. I’ve people watched at book signing events and they always stop at the covers with cats and sweets.

This past six months of hanging out with indie authors and getting an education on the indie publishing world has been such an eye opener. It’s been great to learn from everyone. The hard work that goes into indie publishing has changed how I approach my reading list. I actually read more now, on the treadmill, before I go to bed, all the time. 90% of my reading list is indie authors. The result: I appreciate indie books so much more.
Today, I dropped by my local public library and donated a copy of my book, Absolute Darkness, and the nice librarian there asked me, “Do you make money writing?” I had to explain that this is my passion side-hustle that I hope breaks even. Sure, if you keeeeeeep at it, study and hone your craft, pour all of your passion into it—some people do make it big. I’m fortunate that the text books fund the novels and the love of the narrative form in animation, film and written fulfills my obsessive nature. I HAVE to write. It isn’t about the money. But seeing people enjoy the book, LOTS of people. That’s what drives me. I want you to read this. I want you to take this journey I’ve created and then tell your friends.
Certainly, one hopes that the multitude of friends and acquaintances will take a moment to appreciate this work. Reward us with a good review on amazon and goodreads so that the books can have a chance at being seen by everyone. It takes time to read. I know. It takes time to write.
Hannah’s blog post below gave me a literal gut laugh. She’s a riot. Buy her book next week and take a picture with a doughnut to promote it. That’s a win-win for everyone. Read the book on the treadmill if that makes you feel better. —happy indie reading, everyone. …tina
This list comes to you from someone who has ridden the roller coaster of publishing more times than I would like to discuss or think about… mainly because I get very nauseous on roller coasters. This list is meant to be entertaining, yet there is a very serious message that I absolutely mean at this stage of both my life (I’m 43…you know, all that mid-life-I’m-not-bullshitting-anymore stuff) and this stage of my writing (so-called) career:
7 Things YOU Should do right now to help (me) the author in your life:
Here we go:
BUY a copy of my book. Listen, I know you want me to just give you a copy because we’ve been friends for years (either virtually or in real life). Or, maybe you have some rule about never buying books because you want to save a tree? Whatever your…
