Absolute Darkness available now on Amazon and Kindle

If you are afraid of tight, dark, watery places—beware. Absolute Darkness is now available on Kindle and Amazon. You can read it right now on Kindle! The print version will be available in a couple of days from Amazon.

Here’s the scoop on how to get a good deal. Buy the kindle book—I was able to set the price low there. Then you can get the matchbook price—where you get the print version too, at a cheaper price!  The print version alone costs more: Amazon sets the minimum.  If you are patient, I’ve set up a sale for December 3-10th for .99 cents.  That’s the soonest I could run a sale.

I’m so humbled by this indulgent, selfish moment. This one is for me. Everyone that has put up with me, listened, supported, brought wine, consoled, put up with my questions…thank you. The wonderful editor on this project, Sherron Ostrander, deserves a medal. She has taught me more than she could ever know and held my hand so much in these last months. The writer’s club that started it all and helped me with the outline and direction—you all rock: Matt Maloney, Pat Quinn, Kent Knowles and Denise Smith (unofficial member).

I hope you enjoy and that it scares the devil out of you.

warmly,

Alexander

While finishing up the final touches on “Absolute Darkness” a group of us have challenged each other with Novel November. So, I look forward to seeing what can be accomplished in a month. (Sure, with make up classes and recovering from shutting a campus down and making it an evacuation center this past week – why not.) This novel,”Alexander” will be the origin story of Alexander and will explore his relationship with the energy being that he struggles with for all eternity. Unknown to Alexander, there is something more unique about his antagonist than Alexander can even imagine.

Meanwhile, I hope to have “Absolute Darkness” available before the holiday season.

Absolute Darkness

So here’s something different. Last year, I turned down Focal Press for a second edition ofBLOCK

Rig it Right, my apologies for those wanting to see the node editor in that book.  I had another project that I was in the midst of that had to be completed – for me.

A fiction book titled “Absolute Darkness.”

Coming soon to Amazon and Kindle.

I’ve written fiction since as long as I can remember. My first manuscripts being on a manual typewriter – that clues you into how long. I hated all of them and burned them, literally, once I got to around the second re-write stage. Then I’d start another, then another; collecting characters in sketchbooks and plot lines, drawn out on the back of gift wrapping paper all rolled up in my closet.

Along the way I started writing text books to help get those demons out of my head but they never quenched the ongoing list of characters that begged for life.

A few years ago, a group of colleagues and I created the “Shitty Writer’s Club”. All of them are amazing professionals, tops in their own respective fields. Yet, each of us had a passion to write fiction and were held back by our own successes.  What if our work sucked? How could we put our name on something subpar? So, in this club our rule is – it’s ok to suck. That was it – release to fail. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you do not fear failure.  And of course, one could always publish under a pen name  if it was a real stinker.

With that bravado – I will be self publishing a fiction novel under my own name.  It might be awful, I don’t know. I enjoyed writing it, re-writing it and this time – did not burn it.

Why did this one not receive a Viking’s funeral?

1) I was held accountable by The Shitty Writer’s Club.

2) I enlisted an editor who I knew would be brutal, honest and was waiting for that manuscript.

3) It was allowed to suck. There’s plenty out there that does. It’s ok.  I don’t think it sucks horribly, actually. I like this one. I’ve learned a lot over the years and have more to learn.

I’m working on the cover (the image with this blog is not the cover) and book description now and will post updates soon.

For now, here’s what you need to know: cavers, energy being drawn to destroy the universe, time traveling vampire who must spend eternity keeping the universe from being destroyed, time crossed lovers, multiple time lines that must all funnel into one locked moment of death.    Time travel, gore, romance, caving: vertical, horizontal and cave-diving – you get it all!

Watch for updates!

If you are considering self publishing – let me point you to a book that has been invaluable to me. I had my hand held through a lot with Focal Press, so going it alone was something new and I needed guidance.  I highly recommend this book:

“CreateSpace & Kindle Self-Publishing Masterclass” by Rick Smith

Of all the things I’ve done – this is the scariest.

warmly,

HybridAnimation.com is online

HybridAnimationdotCom

The Focal Press team has launched the companion website to Hybrid Animation – 2nd edition.  It looks pretty great!

hybridanimation.com

Happy to see the free online chapters there, the 6+ gigs of data and Jaguar McGuire in its entirety for your viewing pleasure. (A 2d/3d animation example made by SCAD students.)

The cover is imagery from an animation MFA alumn: Paul Tillery. His film is in the film festival circuit. The trailer can be seen here: http://thundercluck.com/

Happy animating! Be fearless.

Hybrid 2nd edition on Amazon! 4 months early! (that cover make me giggle)

Look at that – four months early!        A Christmas present!

Hybrid Animation! Here's your Chicken!!

Hybrid Animation! Here’s your Chicken!!

Oh my gosh, this cover makes me giggle so very much. Y’all don’t even know.  Thank you Paul Tillery (SCAD MFA Animation). The characters are from his thesis film and the book will include a copy of the completed film – among others. The wireframe and loud Tron-like text was not of Paul’s making – don’t blame him for the kookiness.  (Apparently, that is exactly how you spell that.)

Wow – guess we’re going to get into the copy edit part of life super soon.  You know that is going to happen while I’m at SIGGRAPH next month.   Bound to be the timing of it.

Come visit me at SIGGRAPH Vancouver. The SCAD Booth will be easy to spot -we’re right next to Pixar!

You can preorder at Amazon:  http://amzn.com/0415718708

All over but the FTP – Hybrid Animation 2nd edition done.

AlloverbuttheFTPWell, there she goes – “Hybrid Animation 2nd Edition” uploading to Focal. Of course, there is copy edit next and that last moment to adjust and tweak.  But, for now – deadline met – almost three months early. I’ll test out some of the tutorials on this Wacom Cintiq Companion demo unit that just arrived in the mail. Thank you Wacom!!!

CintiqCompanion

(It happens to have Zbrush already loaded on it – so first – I gotta play with my one of my favorite softwares!) Then – back to what I was really going to do – test to see if this unit can 1) be retrofitted to go into the ol’ 2D Disney desk 2) handle the Toon Boom I want to throw at it.  Now that the text books are done – time to get back to playing.  Oh – and I need to go do another author picture. Time to go caving.

Double Oh – looks like I beat my own personal deadline and never made it to someplace special/different to enjoy that last ritualistic FTP. Oh well – I have a Cinitq to play with.
