In hindsight…
… I think my bad day started yesterday. Possibly even Monday, actually, when I had to collect Miss Six from school, “sick” (where “sick” means complaining of a very bad headache with no other apparent symptoms – high temperatures did manifest later, but really have no clue what is wrong with her). This meant a half day off work, followed by a full day off yesterday, which was at least productive. But last night I received the month’s bundled phone bill to find the delightful surprise of nearl...

Sick day (not me, one of the kids!)
Miss Six is home sick today. There have been some horrid bugs going around. My immediate line manager and a co-worker were down for a week each recently, the kids’ school apparently had about a quarter of the students out ill yesterday. Knock on wood, we’re drifting past much of it (Master Two was crook on the holidays, but coped okay and recovered well), but on Sunday M6 started complaining of a headache. We, being the disbelieving parents that we are, sent her off to bed to sleep it off. Sh...
Two posts on editing (in various forms)
In the past few days I’ve read two very interesting posts on different forms of editing. As I’m about to restart my studies in this area, this is rather timely for me.
First was the Angry Robot post about what the copyeditor does (by Anne Zanoni) – really interesting insight into the process.
Then Justine Larbalestier wrote a piece on what she meant by saying editors are not allowed to rewrite their authors’ books (and no, she doesn’t mean her words are precious!). Useful to see a pro author’s...

Going back to study
Maybe I’m a bit crazy, but I’ve decided to hop back on the study horse and head back to uni (online)for another go-round I started a Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing several years ago, but put it on hold when we moved to WA. What with one thing and another, I didn’t get back to it, but I’ve decided to have another crack. I spoke to the uni today and while the course I started is not current, I can be reinstated to it, with a view to switching to the new option, the Master of Arts s...

New Who in Conversation: Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords (S03E12/13/14)
David is coming to New Who for the first time, having loved Classic Who as a kid. Tehani is a recent convert, and ploughed through Seasons 1 to 6 (so far) in just a few weeks after becoming addicted thanks to Matt Smith – she’s rewatching to keep up with David! Tansy is the expert in the team, with a history in Doctor Who fandom that goes WAY back, and a passion for Doctor Who that inspires us all. We’re going to work our way through New Who, using season openers and closers, and Hugo shortli...
A homelife updatelife
We’ve been back at school – can you tell by the radio silence? Had our 19 week scan last Monday, all looks well and we know the gender (can’t say it in public though, because Granna doesn’t want to know!). Feeling lots of little wriggles now, and looking on the scans bubs is rather active indeed, which could mean I’m in for a bit of booting about as growth continues!
I’ve been granted part-time status at work as of next week (full-time was not fun for family life), and it seems I’ll be finishi...

So this is the end of the holidays
And what have I done? Not quite as much as I would have liked, but I’m relatively satisfied! The list!
Sort the garage – need to be able to get the car inside, and hopefully find space for some gym gear for husband.Think I need to call this a Work in Progress. Husband has fitted new gym gear in, but no hope for car yet. However, I did find lots of things I was looking for and did some sorting and throwing out.
Sort the kids clothes – pack up too smalls, find next size up hand-me-downs for Maste...
Brave – a brief review
I just came home from watching Brave with the kids. I really enjoyed it, and the kids did too, even Master Two, who sat through most of it without his 3D glasses on but coped admirably (this is an achievement, as I’ve not tried to take him to the cinema for a while – last time was a debacle!). I think this movie has great messages in it for adults (especially those of us who are mothers) and teens, and is probably a bit scary for lots of younger kids, but there’s a lot to like. Merida is awes...

Four days left
Why do holidays go so darn QUICKLY? We’ve just four days left of our three week break and time simply has vanished, I’m certain. The list does not look so healthy:
Sort the garage – need to be able to get the car inside, and hopefully find space for some gym gear for husband. Hmm, some progression, but not nearly enough. Can probably fit the gym gear, but not the car!
Sort the kids clothes – pack up too smalls, find next size up hand-me-downs for Master Two, find the baby clothes!Have done Mast...
