June 13, 2022: Get In Character, With Character Sheets!

Back in my game-shop days, one thing that many folks did when considering a new RPG is to look at the character sheet in the core rulebook. It was a quick-and-easy way to get a feel for the game, see what information the designers felt was important, and get a glimpse at the game's style. In this brave, new, digital era (PDFs are how old?!), you can get the same experience by downloading character sheets.

Although it had been available previously as part of the preview, we recently added a downloadable stand-alone character sheet for the Girl Genius Sourcebook and Roleplaying Game (direct link to the sheet is here). And we've long had character sheets available for The Fantasy Trip , GURPS , and more.

Of course, if you want to make your experience really snazzy, we're happy to sell you items such as The Fantasy Trip: Deluxe Character Journal . But the core character sheets are all freely available to download, use, and learn a bit about the game.

June 11, 2022: Are You A Storyteller? Do You Want To Write An Ogre Game?

Are you familiar with The Wretched ? Chris Bissette's solitaire roleplaying game is a great experience for those who enjoy journaling games. The core mechanics have been released as an SRD and rules system known as Wretched & Alone. There have been dozens of different games released under the SRD and I think we could publish an Ogre solo game using the Wretched & Alone SRD. If we had one!

There are, no doubt, many Ogre fans who would enjoy the chance to grab their card deck, dice, a notebook and pencil, and a tumbling block tower to adventure through a story . . . and why shouldn't you be the author?

If you're familiar with the Wretched & Alone game, the Ogre universe, and have stoytelling skills and an idea, feel free to email me and we can chat. Serious and professional inquiries only, please, but rest assured that I personally think that this would be a fun project. If we do receive a great idea from a talented game author, we'll seriously explore opportunities.

Before emailing, please make sure you've played some of the Wretched & Alone games – you can find several here – and that you have reviewed and understand our writing guidelines. If your emailed pitch engages our imaginations, we'll issue a contract and, of course, pay upon acceptance of the final work. 

If we receive multiple great pitches, maybe there's a chance to produce a collection of adventures rather than a single title.

June 9, 2022: Another STL Winner From Iain Lovecraft

When it comes to print-it-yourself STL files, Iain Lovecraft has some of the most polished and comprehensive Kickstarters out there. They include really beautiful, professional sculpts, and they deliver so much that even if you only want half of what's included, you get a tremendous bang for the buck. His latest one, now in its last 48 hours, is centered around gloomy Gothic-style buildings. Included are the spectacular Hungry Toad Tavern, which would make a good Kickstarter all by itself, along with a river barge with interchangeable parts, multiple bridges, an assortment of townsfolk, and of course the vampires. There's a stagecoach, a gazebo, parts for a dwarven mine, and a lot more. Almost all the stretch goals have been unlocked already; the final one is a vampire's castle. If you're just starting to build your collection of 3D minis, this will give you a good, and wide-ranging, set to get you started.

Both of us have supported as individuals, and we are both really looking forward to printing the Hungry Toad Tavern; that is going to be a showpiece.

Iain's Kickstarters are always good, but this is one of the best. It's in the last 48 hours, so check it out now.

If you have our own TFT Foes I , the skeletons (along with the ghouls from the upcoming  Foes II  ) will fit in nicely, too; those dwarves don't know what's around the corner.!

June 8, 2022: One Weird Trick To Speed Up Your Boardgames

If you're like our household and enjoy playing lots of tabletop games, one challenge that often comes up is getting on the same page about the rules. Whether learning them, looking up a rules question, or trying to ensure everyone's playing correctly, it can be difficult to keep the game moving when there's only one reference set.

So why not print more?

Most games pages on our site have downloadable versions of the rules. Zombie Dice , Munchkin , SPANC . . . well, heck, I'm not going to link to all our games, but poke around – there's a lot of useful stuff there!

Having extra copies is especially helpful when trying to teach new folks, because some players learn better by reading or following along while a more experienced player explains them. And having more sets makes a lot of the "can I do this brilliant strategy" plans go faster . . . or even those "what does this type of card do, again?" questions. (We could probably squeeze in an extra few games at our family's 7 Wonders holiday marathons if we had more copies of the rules to pass around.)

As an added bonus, since they're not part of your "collection" and printouts are easily replaceable, it's trivial to mark them up, highlight them, scribble important notes, or just doodle when it's not your turn.

So if you're looking to make your games faster and friendlier, fire up the printer and wow your table during the next game night. Extra copies of rules rule!

June 7, 2022: Munchkin Bookmarks Of Ocean Dice Live On Kickstarter

Under the sea, under the sea, turns out it's better when you backstab under the sea! The Official Munchkin Bookmarks Campaign Of Ocean Dice is live on Kickstarter now, for one week only. It features six all-new dice sets showcasing a variety of vibrant ocean life and accompanying Munchkin bookmarks to let you use the dice in the game. 

Each set features six dice in three different aquatic colors: teal, light blue, and dark blue. The one pip in each set is replaced with an iconic ocean creature, either a shark, octopus, turtle, seahorse, killer whale, or starfish. I'm partial to the octopus set; I can use it in The Fantasy Trip with my octopi warriors and wizards! Each set also has a dedicated bookmark with a unique rule to use in your game of Munchkin . No spoilers, but the Turtle Dice  bookmark teases some of the dice-related mechanics that will be used. 

Stretch goals are being unlocked as I write this, with even more swag included for backers. We've also thrown in a few of the  2022 Mystery Boxes  from our previous campaign as add-ons. These are limited, so make sure to add one to your order soon!

June 6, 2022: New Fantasy Trip Kickstarter From Gaming Ballistic!

The small County of Lorne and the Barony of Prufax face an impending invasion from the omnipresent orcs from the northwest. The two realms, long-time rivals, have arranged an alliance – cemented by marriage between the two houses. Lorne's chief retainers must deliver the betrothed (and of course, her lady's maid) to the altar in time for the wedding. It's a simple escort mission; surely nothing could go wrong.You can almost hear a calm, resonant voice saying "Things do go wrong" in the background.  Till Death Do Us Part is the fourth programmed adventure from Gaming Ballistic, played using the In the Labyrinth rules from The Fantasy Trip . You won't need a GM, but there are plenty of options to play with one if desired. Branching paragraphs direct you from encounter to encounter as you make choices. Three characters are provided: a knight, a mercenary soldier, and a ranger. All are 35 points, making them a bit tougher than the 32 points given to starting characters in the game. Development ScheduleInitial playtesting and feedback have been VERY positive, and development is well underway. It's written. It's laid out. It has a cover, and all the art is in commission.
