September 1, 2022: The T'reo School Of Martial Magic Now On Kickstarter

David Pulver brings us a 92-page sourcebook for The Fantasy Trip . . . and it is now funding on Kickstarter! Click here to join the campaign to get the book in PDF or print. The project's print rewards are being offered to Canada, the EU, the UK, and the US. 

The graduates of the T'reo School are among the best martial wizards in the world. Trained by masters, honed by constant duels, they'll never face anything in their lives as tough as T'reo was. A class of 32 students will be cut to 2/3 that size when they graduate three years later. Some quit, some are expelled, but most die in duels.

Some of the masters worry they're not tough enough.

August 31, 2022: Knightmare Chess Variants And Optional Rules Now Available

With the Kickstarter campaign successfully behind us, we've released the Knightmare Chess Variants and Optional Rules booklet at our online store, Warehouse 23. This A6-sized booklet collects Knightmare Chess articles from the 1990s into a physical format that fits right inside the newest Knightmare Chess box. The articles are useful with any edition of the game, including the newest edition that was reprinted earlier this year.

Both the new book and Knightmare Chess are available today, at Warehouse 23.

August 30, 2022: See Steve At DragonCon!

A legendary Labor Day tradition is back this year, with DragonCon in Atlanta, GA, September 1-5! Steve Jackson will be at the show to host events on game design and show off some of our new and upcoming releases. You can find a full schedule of events on the DragonCon site. He will be signing – and showing off a cool new thing – at the Bard's Tower booth on the second floor of the dealer area. I'd highly recommend the design panels with Steve to any aspiring, new, or even veteran tabletop game designer. With over 40 years of experience, he's seen just about everything in the design space. Having an opportunity to learn from a master is rare, so take advantage of that if you can. And his What's New panel on Saturday will give you a sneak peek into our future releases (and there will be one bit of really BIG news), so there's something for everyone.  If you're in Atlanta this weekend, make sure to go by and see Steve at DragonCon!

August 28, 2022: Playing Around With Squarescape

A lot of my time for the past few weeks has gone into the upcoming-sometime Squarescape release. You might remember we did an introductory release a few months ago. A few lucky gamers got in on the ground floor and sent feedback, and a few things were learned. So we geared up and kept going!

The big effort currently has been designing the rest of the tiles (Jean McGuire is now officially a sculptor), printing out a bunch of them, priming and painting and setting up. When we're through we will have a huge and beautiful dungeon to photograph for the campaign. And the process of producing all those tiles gives us the iterative playtest we need to debug both the system and the individual tiles.

In the pictures, you can see an individual tile, some closeups of multiple tiles, and a 5-square-foot dungeon. It looks kind of patchy because some of the tiles aren't even primed yet, while others are fully painted. (As I write this, a hundred or so tiles are behind my garage getting a primer coat.) But it is already awesome.

I don't have a release date yet. It will be a Kickstarter project, maybe our first one in 2023. I can't wait. I have to wait. But it's coming.

August 27, 2022: Adventures Around Jalovhec

If you've enjoyed the artistry of the Octopus Lair , Melee , and Wizard playmats, then you're already familiar with the beautiful cartography work of Dyson Logos. Dyson is an expert cartographer, specializing in maps for use with many fantasy roleplaying games that use square grids in combat. But he does hex maps too! His maps are stunning, recommended, and best of all, many of them are free to download and use today.

One map that may interest fans of both The Fantasy Trip and GURPS is the Adventures Around Jalovhec, a regional hex map just waiting for a talented GM to come in and devise an entire hex crawl. Although the specifics of the map are left open to the GM's imagination, Dyson does provide a little bit of background flavor for those of you who need a springboard to adventure.

"Sprawling over the area where the Greenbeck river joins the Vhec is the trading centre of Jalovhec. A "point of light" in an area of dark forests, wastelands, and inhospitable low mountain ranges, Jalovhec is walled and well-defended against predation by the locals and assisted by its trading partners."

You can find a high-res version of the map – as well as many more maps! – at Dyson's website. 

But don't blame us when you spend hours scrolling through the site.

August 26, 2022: John's "Bike The Barns" Charity Ride

John Kovalic's annual Bike the Barns bike ride for FairShare CSA Coalition fundraiser is back, and it's aiming to break the 2021 record! With still a few days left, John has already raised over the $18,000 mark and is working toward unlocking even more stretch goals.  Stretch goals are a mix of fun bonuses for folks that are donating and nefarious challenges to add to the bike ride, like wearing plush tentacles and Ducks of Doom! Sure would be a shame if John had to wear two ducks on his helmet; we'd just hate it if we unlocked the $21,000 stretch goal. (Let's make it happen.)  There are still a few days left to support, and supporters can get a number of unique rewards (notably a new Munchkin promo: Duck Decade!) We're proud to support this excellent charity ride, even if it means our friend must suffer. Sorry John, but thanks for being amazing and biking for charity!

August 25, 2022: Bad Luck Die In Production

While we do not yet have an exact release date, and have not yet officially announced it, our new Bad Luck Die is in production at the factory and is a beast. This photo shows the die alongside some of the new 16mm Ocean dice (see our current Indiegogo campaign or your local game store!) to give you some sense of scale. As you can see, a 45mm 26-sided die is massive.

The die features 13 different icons: twice! Once in white ink and once in red ink. This gives gamemasters options whenever they sit down to devise ways to introduce the die to their campaign.

Not shown is the red version of the die that has both white and black ink icons. We're producing half-as-many of the red version as the black version of the die, and this behemoth will be a direct release and not offered to distribution. (It's too expensive to manufacture for us to successfully send the die through the standard distribution channels.)
