In the Wake of Irene

Youdidn’t surprise anyone.

Wegazed with watchful trepidation

Asyou brewed and churned

Indeep blue waters far from shores of island nations.

Growingstronger with each hour.

Movingslowly, building forces

Farbeyond our petty powers to control,

Wepay the toll

As you begin your path of torture.

Icower in anticipation,

Seethe first drops pelt my windows,

Feelthe building strength of winds

Thatdrive the deluge to my doorstep,

Sapsthe power from my veins

Withseemingly relentless power,

Wonderingwhen it will end,

Filledwith dread,

Drainedof will,

Spentand left to feel so small.

Some Days

Distantrumbles from a sky of

Mistygray, hanging low,

Movingsteady, marking time,

Marchingsoldier in your prime.

Crispnesschilling morning air,

Sittingon my front porch chair

Iponder what the day will bring.

Daintilythe wind chimes sing

Asrobins chirp

Andfolks walk by,

Gentlebreezes seem to sigh

Andslide across the pine tree’s boughs,

Whoprotests slightly, but allows.

Planswere made

Butwill they serve?

Willprotests yield what they deserve?
Or should I simply roll along

Tosee what fate holds in her song?

Somedays are like this one,

Nodoubt.

I’llwait to see what it’s about.

Balance

Tiptoelightly into wakeless

Shadesof sweet oblivion,

Fightingsleep and desperate hunger

TilI cross the Rubicon.

Wouldyou please repeat the question?

I’mafraid my memory

-Althoughmy wits remain intact-

Isnot quite what it used to be.

Listingwild from port to starboard,

Tiltinghard in stormy seas,

Musthold tightly to the railing

Lestit brings me to my knees.

Ijust need to find some balance

Somewherebetween yang and yen.

Lookingforward to tomorrow,

Dreamingof what might have been.

Are You Here?

Whereare you right now

WhileI’m trying to talk to you?

Areyou here in this brief moment

Ora thousand miles away

Onsome sandy beach at sunset

Bya bonfire sipping wine?

Doyou hear the words I’m saying

Andthe meaning they convey?

Ina world of daydream stalkers

Doesyour expertise surpass?

Canyou cling for just an instant,

Hearwhat others need to say?

Focus.

Simplefocus is a bane to your existence,

AndI don’t have the patience

Tobring you into the fray,

Sopucker up and hustle up and

Learnto pay attention

                          Just for once.

Itwould truly make my day.

Whose Dream is This?

I won’t hear of worldunrest today,

Even though I know thatit exists.

Can’t let anger penetrate

The wall that I havebuilt,

Nothing to disturb thisrestful bliss.

I’ll be turning off theevening news before it starts.

Nothing there but tormentand unrest.

Nothing of the goodness

And the healing that Icrave,

Puts my patient nurturingto test.

Don’t think for a momentI am callous,

Hardened and unfeeling tothe plight.

Quite contrary. I havehope for all humanity.

I just don’t want tothink of it

Or dwell on it tonight.

Give me just one momentof good graces.

Give me peace to close ahectic day.

Let serenity flood everycorner of my mind.

Really,

Whose dream is thisanyway?

Early Morning Splendor

Thunderrumbles deep and low

Asstorm clouds loom in western skies.

Solhas yet to show his face

AndI shrink down to half my size.

Creeping,crawling, reeling, rolling

Ponderouspeaks of garish gray

Stumbletil they reach my doorstep,

Almosttakes my breath away.

Lightningflashes ever closer

Asthe deluge comes at last, and

I,as witness, gaze in awe

Untilthe spectacle has passed.

Whocreates such splendid splendor?

Whatgreat wisdom might inspire?

Sucha rush of rapid rapture

Hadto come from somewhere higher.

Bigger Picture

Searchingthrough the scrambled pieces,

Hundreds,thousands, maybe more

Scatteredloosely, helter skelter

Laidout on the puzzle board.

Tryinghard to find an interlocking place

Tofit, to be,

Tointegrate with all the rest

Andform a perfect symmetry.

Noone piece can be forgotten,

Nota single one misplaced,

Elsethe picture be misshapen

Visionhopelessly erased.

Butwhen the whole has come together

Andeach piece knows where it should be,

Witnessall the bigger picture

Formedwith perfect clarity.

Wellsprings of Happiness

Bubblingup,

Tricklingdown,

Springingfrom somewhere

Deepunderground.

Growingin strength,

Mergingin flow,

Gravitydictating

Whereyou will go.

Soothingthe sorrow,

Easingthe pain,

Coolingthe swelter

Likesweet summer rain.

Endlesslymoving,

Cannotbe still,

Dreamsto fruition,

Fortunesto fill.

Hopeto deliver,

Laughterto deal.

Wellspringsof happiness,

Helpme to heal.

Welcome, Sunshine

Shadowsof the night, be gone.

Yourtime well-spent in nourishment,

Nurturingthe dreams of light

Asdawn brings hope of new beginnings.

Welcome,Sunshine,

Welcomefriend

Smilingdown upon my face.

Spreadyour joy across my brow,

Raiseyour manna to my lips.

Sadnesscannot breach your fortress,

Tragiccause must pass you by as

Everycreature great and small

Upwardturns to meet your stare.

Faithfulwatcher,

Silentgiver,

Askingnothing in return.

Notin worship, but our kinship

Bidsme pause to offer praise.

Music, Food, Wine and Sunshine

Don’tneed much to make me happy,

Justmusic, food, wine and sunshine.

Musicfrom within, without,

Inmy ear or in my mind,

Floodsmy thoughts,

Feedsmy soul,

Fillsmy day with warm delights.

Foodto fill my basic needs,

Totempt the pallet,

Curbthe craving.

Feastingfollies filled with flavor

Inmy nose and

Onmy tongue.

Wineto stimulate my senses

Breakingsoft upon my lips,

Helpme gently to remember,

Bidme fondly to forget.

Sunshinechase away my demons,

Spreadyour light upon my brow.

Showme all my wondrous blessings,

Giveme hope so I may dream.
