USAA To FAA: Our Insurance Adjusters Want Drones

One of America's biggest insurance companies thinks unmanned aircraft could change the way it processes disaster claims.

One of America's largest insurance companies has an unorthodox proposal: using unmanned aircraft to speed up insurance claim processing. USAA, which serves millions of U.S. military personnel and their families with financial services, formally petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on October 2 for permission to use drone aircraft to process insurance claims. The USAA says that flying unmanned aircraft over natural disaster areas where claims have been filed could potentially benefit their membership.

Cuteness Alert: Google And London Zoo Live Stream Meerkats To Test Wi-Fi Technology

Google is hoping "white space" technology can help protect endangered species and improve Internet access in rural areas.

Google and the London Zoo are partnering to stream the zoo's meerkats, Asian otters, and giant Galapagos tortoises on YouTube, but the goal is not only to broadcast adorable animals. The project is a test of the use of white space--small gaps in the radio spectrum that exist between television transmissions--to track endangered species in the wild and protect them from poachers.

Snapchat Says It Is Not Responsible For Any Allegedly Hacked Photos

On 4chan, the event already has a name: "The Snappening."

Late Thursday night, hackers who claim to have collected 13 GB worth of Snapchat photos through third-party apps reportedly released a flood of private images onto the Internet. (The site they were released through has since been taken down, although Business Insider reports that "thousands of people" have already downloaded the collection.)

This Future Archaeological Site Is Filled With Obsidian Nintendo Controllers

A new exhibition by artist Daniel Arsham renders contemporary objects in geological materials, an eerie comment on the passage of time.

When ogling ancient artifacts unearthed from archaeological digs--like Iron or Bronze Age tools--it's easy for museum visitors to forget that at the time of their use, many of these objects represented the height of technology and luxury. Likewise, while, say, extolling the virtues of the shiny new iPhone 6, it's easy to forget that it too will become a dated relic sooner rather than later.
