February 3, 2020: This is the dark timeline!

If you needed any more proof, look no further than yesterday’s Super Bowl.

I need to get back to my Reality Prime where, I expect, I’ll be receiving good news on one of my projects before week’s end.  Wish me luck on my journey back!

Feast your eyes on this haul!

This past weekend, Akemi and I hit the annual Winter Chocolate Show.  We picked up multiples of our favorites including Sirene’s Dark Milk, Hummingbird’s Cap-Haitien, Finnia’s buttermilk milk chocolate, and Coco’s London Fog, in addition to assorted others.  I think we’re good until March.

Suji seems to be settling in as the one and only.  We’ve got her up to two brisk walks a day and I suspect she could even do three.  It’s amazing when you consider that THIS –

Was how she got around when we first got her.  Check out her back legs.  She could barely move them and they were little more than dead weight.  Now, she’s unstoppable!

Finishing up work on a pitch package.  To be honest, I prefer scripting over assembling these overviews which are, for all intents and purposes, sales documents.  Of course, if someone is intrigued enough by the pitch to pick up the show for development or – better yet! – production, that script will come as well.  I’ve been working on this one for about two weeks now and feel it’s in pretty good shape.  In terms of comps, I’m describing it as Supernatural meets This Is Us.  Are you intrigued?

Once I’ve delivered – and provided I haven’t received notes on my outline for the second TimEscape script by then – I’m going to take a week off to recharge, making get some reading/watching in.  Then, next Tuesday, it’s off to Montreal for ??? days to dogsit – and start work on that new feature.

Spoilers for Super Bowl 54!

1

Super Bowl 54 will see the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers.  Mahomes and the Chiefs offense has looked positively unbeatable rolling into the big game, marching up and down the field and scoring seemingly at will, averaging 43 points in their last two post-season games.

They are reminiscent of the top-scoring Washington Redskins of ’83, the 1990 high-flying Buffalo Bills, the Greatest Show on Turf that were the explosive 14-2 2001 St. Louis Rams, and those altogether unstoppable offenses like the ’97 Packers, 2015 Panthers, and last year’s Los Angeles Rams.

All of whom, incidentally, lost the Super Bowl to a superior defenses.

I’m also kind of reminded of the 2016 Atlanta Falcons with their Number #1 scoring offense, averaging 34 points and 416 yards per game in the regular season and scoring a league high 540 points!  Enroute to losing Super Bowl 40.

Or, if you want to talk about unstoppable, how about the 2007 Patriots. 16-0! They didn’t lose a game all season!

All regular season.  But they lost the Super Bowl.

But no.  What Mahomes and this 2019 Kansas City Chiefs team really reminds me of are Dan Marino and the high-octane ’84 Miami Dolphins.  Like Mahomes and the Chiefs, they looked poised to tear it up in Super Bowl 19.

Only to lose.

To the San Francisco 49ers.  38-16

Defense wins championships.

SUPER BOWL 54 FINAL SCORE:

49ERS 42 – CHIEFS 21

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, unlike the Houston game, no catch up.

But plenty of Mostert!

January 31, 2020: I think I might be etherium-deficient!

I remember Dark Matter director/stunt coordinator John Stead coming into my office one day, looking down at the supplements crowding my desk and throwing me a concerned: “Joe, man. Are you okay?”

In retrospect, I probably didn’t need to be taking so many, but I’d just read a Men’s Health article that outlined the most important supplements a man my age should be taking – which happened to amount to approximately 12-15 pills daily.

I know, I know.  I hear that supplements are unnecessary and you get all the vitamins and minerals you need by just eating properly.  But who has the time to eat properly?  Which is why I do a multivitamin every day.  And vitamin D because, according to my doctor, I’m low.  And zinc for .  Oh, and resveratrol for its antioxidant properties.  And that’s pretty much it.

In addition to a mega-pack containing: vitamins A, D3, E, C, B1, B2, niacin, pantothetic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, biotin, calcium, phosphorous, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, potassium, selenium, silicone, choline, inositol, fish oil, DHA, EPA, glucosamine, MSM, catechu, skullcap, etherium, adamantium, inertron, naquadah, and Element Zero.

Now that I think of it, I probably don’t need to double up on the vitamin D and zinc.

Well, I’m looking to finish up a first draft of this series overview (an adaptation of sorts) for top of next week when I can start working on my new feature script.  Hopefully, by that time, I will have received notes on the outline for my second TimEscape script.  And further news on that out-of-nowhere opportunity that presented itself earlier this week.  And that other BIG project that sits, poised to either land or crash in spectacular fashion…sometime in February.

It also looks like I’ll be heading to Montreal to dogsit for my sister in the coming weeks.  Akemi, who has been watching way too many coronavirus youtube videos aint exactly thrilled at the prospect of me being out of town for an extended period, but I reassured her that we should have full confidence in our government that doesn’t seem at all concerned by the prospect of a pandemic.  In fact, they seem downright disinterested.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking of switching my reading up a little by checking out some graphic novels.  Any recent must-reads to recommend?  Any can’t-miss classics to suggest?  Feel free to inundate my comments section.

Still eyeing March for business/dog adoption-themed trip to L.A.  Pitch a few projects.  Take a few meetings.  And hopefully adopt a senior pug or two.

What’s new with you?

January 30, 2020: Dialing home! Excusing psychotic behavior! #AmazingPeopleWithWhomIHaveWorked!

Well, this takes me back to…oh, not that long ago…

Ah, I see ESPN is looking to redeem Michael Vick in its upcoming documentary on the dog-killer:

ESPN producing documentary seeking to excuse Vick’s crimes

“Perhaps the biggest question, though, was raised by the documentary’s director, Stanley Nelson, in a phone interview Wednesday with The Washington Post: “How does something that so many of us see as horribly cruel and torturous, how does anybody not see that?””

Well, with all due respect, Stanley, he’s lying to you.  He’s just looking to rehabilitate his image.

“”I was really, really competitive, and I loved dogs,” he says in the documentary.”

Vick loved them so much that, when he was done with them, he killed them by electrocution and hanging.  I’ll spare you, but the photos of his sadistic crimes are available online for all to see.

You think ESPN is going to include that in the documentary?  Doubt it.

January 28, 2020: Recommend me a new…ah, never mind!

Thinking of starting a new show, but not sure what I should be checking out while I wait for season 2 of The Boys to drop.  I feel in the mood for something in the horror realm and Stephen King’s The Outsider seems the perfect fit, except for the fact they’re dropping episodes on a weekly basis and I do hate to wait.  There’s M. Night Shyamalan’s The Servant, but I’m instantly suspicious of shows that generate articles promising to explain what the hell you just watched.  What else?  Well, I’m not a huge fan of extended PSA’s disguised as t.v. series.  I think it’s important for a show to have a message, and to deliver it in entertaining fashion, but I’d prefer not to be bludgeoned or spoken down to.  I’d also rather not start on something with a huge history I need to catch up on.  A low seasonal episode is great.  A minimal number of seasons produced to date is even better.  I prefer a serialized narrative over episodic storytelling.

Okay.  While I was in the midst of writing the aforementioned, I received a notification from the library informing me that my digital copy of Adrian Thaikovsky’s Children of Ruin is available to read.

Kindly disregard that opening paragraph.

January 27, 2020: Tweetstorm, Dark Matter and #AmazingPeopleWithWhomIHaveWorked!

Thanks to everyone who joined in on our last Stargate tweetstorm.  Although the aim wasn’t really to trend, we did nonetheless place in the Top 10 in France, Germany, and Canada, and ended up showing in the U.S., U.K., and Worldwide trends.  So well done.  The potential homes of a new series were blasted with a reminder that Stargate fandom is out there – and very much looking forward to a new in-canon series.  The rest is up to them…

Came across this nice little article the other day:

1-62

Dark Matter is a mind-bending space drama that’s totally bingeable

“It’s gripping viewing right from the start, in part because the storytelling displays a confidence that you don’t always see in mystery-heavy series like this. It’s not just that it feels like the show already knows the answers to the big questions; it feels like the pathway to those answers is clear – to the showrunners, if not the characters themselves.”

Yes, as a matter of fact, I did have a plan – for every story and character arc.

“Part of what makes Dark Matter so satisfying to watch is the way that it doesn’t let questions pile up. Some of the mysteries in the first episode are answered later in the same episode; others turn out to be questions that hang over the first season, and sometimes over the show’s entire three season run.

And no sooner are some questions answered than new ones come to the fore. What’s going on behind that mysterious locked door? Why is there a murdered teenage boy in the cargo hold? And most importantly of all, it’s clear that it was one of the six who tampered with their stasis pods and wiped their memories – but which one and why?”

Man, this article made me all sorts of nostalgic.  So much so that I’m considering organizing a fan re-watch of the series during which I’ll offer up behind the scenes pics, videos, and trivia on every episode.  Who’s interested?
