#AmazingPeopleWithWhomIHaveWorked@JamieElman was the lead in my first live-action series, a teen sitcom called Student Bodies. A true gem of a human being, he has kept busy ever since, most recently creating, directing and starring in his own comedy series, YidLife Crisis. pic.twitter.com/GuxKiYA0Mi

Akemi made mapo tofu for lunch today and, while serving, told me about the Tofu Truck that used to come around her neighborhood when she was a kid.  Like the ice cream truck, it played music and then parked so that people could curbside purchases.  Akemi recalled being in kindergarten and running out of the house with her giant bowl to be filled with cold tofu in the summer, and hot tofu in the winter.  Curiously, there was also a sweet potato truck that followed the same M.O. but no ice cream truck.

It reminds me of when I was a kid and hearing the musical approach of what I assumed to be the ice cream truck, running outside with my friends only to discover it was actually the cutler truck – an elderly Italian man who sharpened knives or other cutting instruments out of the back of his truck.

I’m thinking of maybe doing something similar, riding around the various neighborhoods in my truck, playing a tune, but instead of offering ice cream or tofu or knife-sharpening, I would offer my script editing services.

Save the date!

In the lead up to our Stargate tweetstorm, I’ve been posting some concept art (by Production Designer James Robbins) from SG-1’s ninth season.

In case you missed it…

Heavy sigh.

Looks like we’re pumping the brakes on adopting a new (old) dog.  The plan is to fly down with Suji, sometime in early March, and have her pick her perfect match.

I am, admittedly, very disappointed in the delay.

Save the date!  Oh, you already have?  Then tell your friends to save the date! Stargate fans worldwide will be launching a final tweetstorm in support of a new in-canon series.  Last time, we told the studios.  This time, we’ll be telling the potential home of a new Stargate series.  On January 25th, prepare to tag any of the following –

Amazon @PrimeVideo
Apple TV+ @AppleTVPlus
Disney+ @disneyplus
NBCU’s Peacock @NBCUniversal
Netflix @netflix
Let’s go!

Hmmmmm.  A little hiccup in our plans to adopt a special needs senior pug. Apparently, little Lexxie can get a little snappy if other dogs trespass on her blanket.  The news has caused Akemi some concern as Suji, our own special needs senior, is a bit of an alpha herself.  A big part of adopting another dog is to give Suji company – and if this second dog can’t get along with Suji, that’s a problem. On the other hand, an equally big part of adopting a dog is to give some needy dog a great home in which to live out their twilight years.  The rescue believes Lexxie may simply be suffering from kennel fatigue as she tends to demonstrate her snappy behavior after returning to the kennel after her weekend home stays with a volunteer.  She is, simply, upset – and, frankly, looking a little depressed. My take is that, regardless of who starts what, Suji and Lexxie will ultimately find a way to work things out – as most dogs do.  Given the fact that they’re both senior pugs – and Lexxie isn’t exactly mobile given her hip issues – I think it’s unlikely they get into any extended skirmishes or cause each other injuries.  But I need Akemi to be comfortable with this decision and if I’m going to go down to pick up Lexxie, I really need to book a flight for next week.  Thoughts?

January 20, 2020: On the scripting front…

A productive day!

I completed a final pass on my horror script, incorporating some of the notes I received on the first draft.  It was delivered to my agent this morning and will be going out this week to test the waters of that great unpredictable marketplace.  Are people still making horror movies?  Are they still looking for horror with a sense of humor?  Do people still read?  More importantly, is responding still a thing?  We’ll find out soon enough!  Or maybe not.

I also delivered the revised outline for my second episode of TimEscape, that bananas sci-fi series I am developing with the gang at EOne.  Thanks to writer Niko Troubetzkoy who drew an assist on this one and whose input to date has proven thoughtful, inspired, and incredibly helpful.

Starting work on that web series adaptation today.  This one promises to be a lot of fun – especially if everything falls into place between now and that April deadline.

I think I’m going to write another feature.  I was struck by an idea last night, then stayed up for hours, playing out the various scenes in my head.  This morning I woke up, wrote everything down and, lo and behold, I’ve got a movie.  Ish.  I’m still undecided about the ending, but very much looking forward to getting started.  Probably next week.  I want to give the ideas time to percolate.  This one will be a rare non-genre output that will, nevertheless, explore familiar territory in the relationship at the heart of this road trip tale.

Finally…

Wut? Apparently, you're supposed to cook steel cut Irish oats for 30 minutes. I've been making them in 5. Might explain my week-long stomach ache.

January 17, 2020: Lexxie

Okie doke.  Lexxie is coming home.  Eventually.  I’ve filled out the proper paperwork and paid the adoption fee.  Now, all I have to do is get her here.

When we adopted Suji, two volunteers from the Pacific Pug Rescue kindly took me up on my offer of two round trip tickets and a hotel stay in beautiful Toronto in exchange for transporting her to us.  In Lexxie’s case, however, schedules will not permit it so it looks like I’ll be flying down to pick her up, either this week or the next.  Akemi and I discussed going together, with Suji, but I suspect Suji would prefer to lounge around the apartment rather than suffer a six hour trip (there and back) in a sherpa bag.

Lexxienew3

Ideally, I’d like my trip to line up with some other purpose – maybe a few pitch meetings for instance – but it’s looking kind of tight.  The best I can probably hope for at this point is to send out my horror script top of next week and meet up with potential interested parties the next.

If not, I may look to getting the trip done in a day.  Out of Toronto on an 8:00 a.m. flight and in to L.A. for 10:30 a.m.  Then, out of L.A. on a 3:40 p.m. flight and back home for 11:15 p.m.  Might be kind of tight – but doable.

Downtime? Fuggedaboutit!

I find I have more time to relax and unwind when I’m actually working on a show.  At least, when I’m working and I have addressed any production-related outstanding issues, I feel comfortable making use of the downtime to read or watch something.  When I’m not in production, it’s technically all downtime but, really, time I should be spending setting up my next show.  So, unless it’s work-related, I feel guilty reading or watching something when I should be writing another script or developing another series or going out taking meetings.  The really frustrating part is you can’t just work on a single project and take comfort in a job well done because you have to have several projects on the go in order to give yourself even odds at landing something.  And, more often than not, it’s never the project you love most or think is actually going to go.  It’s a strange industry and makes me reflect fondly back on the Stargate days when we knew early we were going to be working on another season so I could actually carve out weeks of stress and guilt-free R&R.  Back then, we would get the pick-up well before wrap, then spend a good month after wrap breaking stories for next season.  We’d have 2-3 months off to write and, otherwise, unwind before the machine would start again.  It was great being able to travel or simply take the day off to read without feeling like I should really be working on projects A through J.  And A through J is conservative because, in this line of work, projects never really die.  They’re either shelved indefinitely or simply never referred to again, like some embarrassing cousin who no one likes to talk about at family functions.

In situations like these, it really helps to have a supportive partner, like Akemi who declares all of my writing “Great!” despite never having actually read any of it (although she watched and loved both Stargate: Universe and Dark Matter), or wholly backs the prospect of moving to L.A. for work despite the fact that, the last time we went, she was accosted by a homeless man and ended up spending the greater part of our stay, while I was at my meetings, sequestered in our hotel room surfing the internet.

Okay, off to revise a pitch, rewrite an outline, do a pass on a horror script, plot an 8-10 page series overview, get another project, and agonize over the lack of response on another three!
