October 23, 2020: Is it just me…?

I’m beginning to suspect I’m in a distortion bubble where time is rapidly accelerating.  I feel like it was just last week that I was saying “Hey, it’s summer already!” and, suddenly, here we are on the cusp of winter!  And it’s not just me.  Lately, Akemi has taken to remarking about the increasingly short days.  Bedtime?  Again?!  Before we know it, we’ll be deep into 2021.  And who knows what fresh horrors that year will bring!

How about a little Yes/No…

10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

Images-2 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

I came across this article the other day…

10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter

It’s an interesting list and got me to thinking: What would I recommend?

Well, since you (didn’t) ask…

1 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#10. Trigun

A wild space western focusing on the adventures of Vash the Stampede, a notoriously destructive outlaw,  and the two insurance agents tasked with minimizing the damage he causes.  It’s no secret that I drew inspiration for Dark Matter from several anime, and this fun, action-driven title was tops among them.

1-1 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#9. Red Dwarf

Though more of an out and out comedy, Red Dwarf does offer Dark Matter parallels in its premise, fish out of water set-up, and its adorably atyptical android.

1-2 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#8. The Mandalorian

I mean, sure, there’s some definite tonal and thematic similarities in a series that echoes the fun and adventure of the original films.

1-3 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#7. The Orville

Speaking of fun, how great is it that a network demonstrates confidence in a comedic far-future series?  I love sci-fi with humor and its a running element in most all my work.

1-4 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#6. Stargate: Atlantis

And nowhere is this more evident than in my pre-Dark Matter scripts – like, say, Atlantis for instance.  As I’ve stated in many an interview, I love humor because it acts as a shorthand, allowing audiences to quickly connect with characters.

1-5 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#5. Blake’s 7

This one is, perhaps, the most obvious in that we follow the seven member criminal crew of the galaxy’s most wanted ship.  Bad guys DO have more fun.

1-6 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#4. Stargate: SG-1

Yes, this the show on which I honed my writerly talents and gave rise to my love of several of the themes that recur through much of my work: redemption, friendship, and family.

1-7 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#3. Firefly

Many a fan of both shows have drawn complimentary comparisons between them.  I’ll take it!

1-8 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#2. Farscape

Maybe not as gloriously bananas as Farscape (although episodes like All the Time in the World do come close), but Dark Matter definitely shares similarities in its colorful crew and occasionally out-there future tech and stories.

1-9 10 Shows To Check Out If You Loved Dark Matter!

#1. Cowboy Bebop

From tone to themes to Dark Matter’s FIVE as a live action distance cousin of Radical Edward, there are plenty of inspirational parallels here.  If you haven’t done so already, check it out!

So, are there any shows I missed that you would include on the list?

October 20, 2020: Projects on the move! Wraith interior decor! Dark Matter Episode 3 discussion!

It seems like a number of the balls I set in motion months are finally coming into play.  Some strategic movement on TimEscape as well as my other sci-fi series, and progress on Project F (yet another sci-fi project).  I suspect things will be picking up in the next couple of weeks!

Y’know, I always loved the wraith interior decor…

Oh, hey, in the most unlikely event you missed it, here’s my Dark Matter Episode 3 panel discussion with the gang at Orville Nation…

October 17, 2020: The Crime Club convenes to discuss Schneider vs Bax!

The day after my birthday and I’m suffering from a bit of a food hangover.  Nevertheless, I pushed through and actually got a little work done today – restructuring the pilot, tweaking the first act, and beating out the pitch for that time travel series we’ll be taking out next week.

So, did anyone check out Schneider vs. Bax, last week’s Crime Club pick?  If you didn’t and were planning on catching up…you might want to sit this one out.

Images-1

A hitman (Schneider) is hired to kill a man (Bax) living alone in a remote home in the wilderness.  But, in an early twist, we learn that the target has actually been hired to off the hitman who will come gunning for him.  It’s a great premise that ultimately falls flat and the blame lands on some horrendous plotting.  Every twist and turn is predicated on a massive contrivance or ridiculous character motivation.  Let me count the ways…

Bax conveniently forgets this is the day a hitman will be dispatched to kill him and just happens to invite his estranged daughter to visit that afternoon.

The guy who hires Schneider (and tips off Bax) at some point trips and falls and knocks himself out, giving events time to unfold and spiral out of control.

A prostitute happens to find refuge from her violent pimp in the warehouse Schneider uses as a safe house, forcing the hitman to act and, for some reason, take her hostage.

Bax’s father (and his young girlfriend) also happen to choose this particular day to visit him.

The guy who hires Schneider accidentally sends a text to Schneider’s phone intended for Bax, thus idiotically tipping Schneider off to what’s really going on.

For some reason, Bax’s daughter wanders off into the surrounding woods where her grandfather happens to find her and attempts to assault her before she knifes him to death.

Oh, did I mention this movie is supposed to be a comedy?  Well, it’s described as a black comedy but it was devoid of humor – unless, of course, you find idiotic behavior hilarious.

There were so many times while watching this movie that I wondered “Why is this character doing this?” or “Why didn’t he/she do that?”.  Alas, it became readily apparent that the reason “Why?” was because the writer needed them to.  Without these massive coincidences and suspect behavior, he wouldn’t have had a movie.

Let’s see if we can do better next week when the Crime Club reconvenes to discuss Blue Ruin…

October 16, 2020: Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.  Today, I celebrated by taking Suji out for her walks, restructuring a pilot, and thanking people for their birthday messages posted across various social media platforms.  Since it’s also our one year wedding anniversary, Akemi and I upheld tradition by having ramen for lunch.  For dinner, it was dinner from Buca, my favorite restaurant, delivered compliments of sis, Daisy, and mom.

Between the shipment I received the other day and these, I think I’m good for socks until at least next summer.  Also pictured: my birthday pecan pie and the new building fob I got for my birthday because my old one broke.  Romantic, no?

Alrighty, off to do some birthday things like take Suji out for another walk, watch anime, and eat some tiramisu.  I leave you with some photos from the SGU vault…Stargate-universe-8 Stargate-universe-9 Stargate-universe-10 Stargate-universe-11 Stargate-universe-12
