November 6, 2020: Let’s hit the mailbag!

What do you say?

Chocolate-covered shrimp snacks make a comeback in Japan this winter

I am…dubious.

This is the type of instagram content I enjoy.  This account belongs to a senior couple who post photos of them modeling clothes people don’t collect from their cry cleaning shop:

And their story.

Choose your dessert!

Opening the mailbag….

Natokanaru77 writes: “Need to recharge?”

Answer: That’s all I’ve been doing since January!

TamDixon writes: “What are you Thanksgiving plans?”

Answer: Well, being Canadian, we already celebrated our Thanksgiving in October with traditional tourtière and candied maple leaves.  Hoping the best for Charlie!

Shawn Parrish writes: “Have you stopped getting comics weekly? You haven’t done a best covers post in a while.”

Answer: My reading has fallen off drastically this year, and that includes comics.  But you’re right.  I really should make it a point to resume my Best Covers Wednesday entry.

gforce writes: “Have to head to the dentist on Friday morning to get my first crown ever, um… installed? ”

Answer: Well, report back.  Akemi and I are do for a cleaning and are leery about heading back in to see the dentist.  From what I hear, they’ve dispensed with the water pik but are still good to go with the enamel scratching.

Karen writes: “How’s the condo working out? You had some misgivings when you first bought it.”

Answer: It’s actually been pretty great.  We’re well located, right in the heart of downtown, and our place is south facing meaning we get a lot of sun.  We’re right next door to a park (perfect for Suji!) and within walking distance of shops and restaurants.  I do miss having my own gym though.

TamDixon writes: “How’s your Mom?”

Answer: Mom’s leg is still sore, especially after shopping.

November 5, 2020: I’m Creative Neutral!

Well, it’s been a pretty unproductive week.  Spinning my wheels on that YA sci-fi pilot rewrite and making slow progress on the outline for the Project F pilot.  I was primed to start pitching not one but TWO sci-fi projects, but word is a lot of the major buyers are closing up shop until January.  Once Thanksgiving is upon, it’s going to be: “Let’s circle back on that in 2021.”  To be honest, I’m not all that bothered as it will give me time to, hopefully, finish that rewrite – and complete a first draft of the Project F pilot.

November 4, 2020: Akemi Wednesday!

I once had a girlfriend who would rage-quit any game she was about to lose, occasionally bursting into furious tears while doing so.

Not sure why I thought of her today after all these years.

Anyway, on to better relationships…

November 3, 2020: Social (Media) Etiquette!

I try to maintain an open line of communication with fandom, through this blog and various other social media platforms.  It’s something I’ve been doing for years now and I quite enjoy getting to know people.  There are occasions, however, when I feel I have to draw the line.  Specifically –

Do not direct message me to ask me to deliver a message to a cast member.  Most of them maintain their own social media presence and you can reach out to them directly.  If you do and they don’t get back to you, take that as a no and move on.

I don’t mind answering fan DM’s if they don’t feel comfortable putting something out in public, but if it’s simply to chat or ask questions about a show I’ve worked on, please stick to the public forums so fellow fans can be enlightened as well.

Don’t reach out to me on facebook or linkedin and expect a response within 2-3 months.

Under no circumstances am I interested in reading your Stargate ideas.  I don’t own the rights to the franchise so I can’t do anything about it.

Even though I worked on a series that featured ascended beings, I”m not at all interested in reading about them.  Other topics I’m not interested in reading about include: mysticism, conspiracies, the NBA, the self-help racket, pretty much any book involving magic, dragons, or a character who at some point is referred to as “the chosen one”.

Also, no one spoil the election results for me.  I’m recording CNN and plan to watch this weekend.

Last night, the Orville Nation panel and I discussed Dark Matter Episode 5.  Check out the video.  Chock full of insights.  Now with 20% MORE ZOMBIES!

Your International Guide to Zombies!

Given that it is Halloween, I thought today would be a good time to offer up this handy zombie guide in the event of a zombie apocalypse in your area.  Of course, the severity of the outbreak and your ability to deal with the undead onslaught will vary from country to country but, for starters, please consult this ranking by The Zombie Research Society that helpfully breaks down which nations are best positioned to weather the flesh-eating storm:

TOP TEN COUNTRIES

Good on Australia for placing first.  And quite surprised to see Canada place second.  The fact that the U.S. lands in third, given present circumstances, leads me to question the methodology.

Not all zombies are created equally however.  Your chances of survival will depend on the type you will be facing.  Here are your most concerning varieties…

Zombie

North American variant

Relatively slower moving that your average human, they’re leisurely in their pace, more likely to shamble or crawl than break out into a brisk run.  They’re also fairly noisy, given to groaning, gargling, and cacophonous mouth-breathing and, thus, unlikely to surprise you – unless you happen to step on one or are a character in a movie or zombie t.v. series who has their back to a chain-link fence.

Hgco_w

British variant

Okay, I’m not going to sugarcoat it.  These guys are trouble, noted for their surprisingly explosive sprinting abilities and shameless eating habits.

1eztgpqooevkrhlni06evdg

Chinese variant

Unlike the North American shambler and British sprinter, these zombies get around by hopping.  There are about a half-dozen sub-varieties, ranging from relatively harmless livestock-feeders to the more accomplished ninja zombies who can fly, shapeshift, and crawl around alarmingly quickly.

Traintobusan

South-Korean variant

Similar to the British fast-moving variety, they are also astonishingly adept crawlers and have also been known to take public transportation for longer hauls.

Shockwaves4-4-1

Nazi variant

This slow-moving variant prefer aquatic ambulation (which explains their penchant for goggles) and can be found in large bodies of water.  They appear to be vegetarian, preferring to drown rather than consume their victims.

There are other zombie variants, but they shouldn’t be a cause for concern lest you have offended a sorcerer or witch.

Hope that helps.  Stay safe.  And Happy Halloween!

October 30, 2020: I have been remiss!

Getting sloppy.  I, apparently, missed yesterday’s blog post – although, I could have sworn I did post.  But Akemi confirms I did not and has informed me that, as a result, I’m going to have to post TWO entries today to catch up.  So, I’ll just post-date this entry October 30th, 2020 and swing around with a second, October 31st entry later tonight.

What do you say?  Yes/No?

Personally, I’m a big YES and believe they should do an entire cereal milk line including such favorites as Lucky Charms, Froot Loops, and, of course, Capn Crunch.

So, how are things shaping up for you all heading into the weekend?  I’m still working my way through that pilot rewrite, but had a terrific call today with an executive who not only produces genre but is a fan of genre.  I have to mention it because finding a genre executive who is actually a fan of sci-fi and actually understands and respects the genre is about as rare as spotting a white stag.  Very exciting.

Speaking of exciting…
