Hi Jason,
Thanks for the post! It was a really fun book to write and sometimes, I think I am a creature with a five second memory living in the now... makes it easy to identify with a goldfish! Ian the goldfish, was a great vehicle for a character with a carpe diem attitude and an awesome way to have a non-judgemental character watching other peoples lives go by!
Cheers,

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the question, and your thoughtful review. It’s always great to hear what someone pulls out of a book!

While I do have a bundle of favorite authors, such as Rupert Thomson (The Five Gates of Hell still haunts for some reason), Craig Nova (I’ve read The Geek pretty much every year since I first found it), Peter Carey (love his Collected Stories), and the like, there was no single influence while I was working on Fishbowl. I think the reason these authors are my favorites is because they are trying something different with every book.

Fishbowl started as a short story when I was playing around with a floating narrative style. Once I was finished with the short story, it became apparent it wasn’t really finished... that The Roxy could be used to dissect an entire life story, in a short time frame, told by the residents there. And that was the attempt. To paraphrase the book, to show we don’t live our own lives, we live each other’s together.

Happy reading,
Brad

A few days back, the U.K. launchedthe paperback version of Fishbowl! It’s now out there in the world as a soft and imminently caress-able paperback. The folks at Ebury did a bang-up job on creating a gorgeous new version of the book (and it will soon be available at Tesco shops as well). Check out the new cover below!

“There's such a fragile, thin veneer of illusion between the words "together" and "alone".”
Bradley Somer, Fishbowl

“When the reason for a thing's being illuminated, it doesn't hold the same mystery it does when it is unknown, which is both a wonderful and a horrible revelation. It's wonderful because it's like peeking into the universe and understanding a tiny bit of its complexity. It's also horrible because a little bit of magic is removed from the world with each discovery.”
Bradley Somer, Fishbowl

“If you live half as long, is the time you spend twice as important?”
