OF BASEBALL AND BULLETPROOF BIBLES

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

As believers, there are three families we receive; the one we’re born into, the one we’re born again into and the one we choose to fellowship with while waiting for the biggest family re-union ever. Don’t let family hurts keep you from celebrating this precious gift.

OF BASEBALL AND BULLETPROOF BIBLES

Years ago, my son, Luke, and I were on sitting on the “home run porch” watching the Texas Rangers play ball. For a while, I was confident enough in my athletic abilities to pray for a ball to come our way. It would be cool to get our hands on a real major league ball.

At the head of the fourth inning, Michael Young drove a homer right to my seat. If you saw it on TV, I was the fat guy pushing people over to protect myself from the monster shot. There, on national television, I screamed like a little girl and jumped two full seats to my left to avoid that ball.

The really awesome dad right in front of me – apparently a real man – held his glove up in front of my face and, after catching it, handed it to his very impressed 9-year-old. Luke looked at me. I looked at Luke and we both busted out laughing.

Side note: Be careful what you pray for because you might look stupid when you get it.

One of the guys I crawled over was a 19-year-old soldier on leave from Iraq. For some reason, the whole situation reminded me of Private First Class Brendan Schweigart.

A New York native, Schweigart told his mother he always carried his Bible into battle, tucked under his bulletproof shield. One day, he was shot in the chest with a high powered rifle. That Gideon pocket Bible from boot camp saved his life by shielding his heart.

To this day, he has that Bible, bullet lodged into its pages – the bullet meant for his heart stopped somewhere in the book of Psalms. I think it’s a great idea to keep your heart protected with God’s Word.

Just like that soldier putting God’s word under his body armor didn’t know it would cause him to dodge a bullet, you and I often don’t realize that hiding God’s Word in our heart causes us to doge something much more lethal – sin. Be intentional – shield your heart.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. – Psalms 119:11

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO FOCUS ON GOD’S WORD. HE PROMISES IT WILL ACCOMPLISH THE PURPOSE SET OUT FOR IT – SAVING YOUR HIDE AND MINE!

WARRIORS AREN’T BORN

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

The battles you are going through today will be the stepping stone to the victories of tomorrow. Don’t let the enemy put a strangle hold on you. Persevere through. You will be ready for battle with the strength and stamina that God has given to you.

WARRIORS AREN’T BORN

In my day, fighting wasn’t a big deal. Today, if a fight breaks out, you can count on a mob or a gun.

My mind goes back to a terrible eighth grade bully. Held back three years, he was a foot taller than me and had the IQ of cool whip. He seemed undefeatable. After several months of being his piñata, my history teacher and two coaches took me aside for a clandestine meeting. It was years before I knew that word meant “secret.”

In short, they wanted me to fight back. They showed me how to fight and encouraged me. My chance at redemption came soon enough and I did what they taught me. I punched the bully in the nose. The beating that followed was classic in the annals of Joshua Middle School.

Another clandestine meeting. This time, encouragement and slaps on the back. “Way to go! You had him Troy! Why did you stop? You should have kept punching!”

In the end, I did put that bully down. I didn’t grow in stature. I grew in confidence through every terrible battle. I was no longer afraid of being beat up. My resistance discouraged that bully and he finally decided he didn’t want to mess with me.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7

I learned how to be a warrior from that bloody season of my life. You see, you don’t learn to become a warrior through victorious battles. Warriors aren’t born. They’re made through a long succession of defeats. It’s all about getting back up and going after victory again and again.

Victory grows from momentum. The Bible calls it “faithfulness” and faithfulness is all about persistence. So be persistent in the battles between your ears. Battle darkness with light, lies with truth and overcome evil with God’s goodness. Invade your earth with heaven. It’s what you were made to do!

For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. – Psalm 18:39

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO DISCOURAGE THE ENEMY. GET UP FROM THAT DEFEAT AND TAKE A SWING AT SOMETHING BIGGER AND BETTER.  DON’T BE AFRAID OF GETTING BEAT UP – THE VICTORY IS ALREADY WON!

HANDLING YOUR HATERS 101

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

The saying goes that home is where the heart is; Jesus says, “My home is in your heart.”

HANDLING YOUR HATERS 101

If you are chasing after God and His purpose for your life, you are going to have people who don’t like what you’re doing or the success you are having. It’s human nature to covet what someone else has, especially blessings.

So, how do you handle your haters? Let me give you three simple steps.

1) Be a purpose-driven person. Remain confident in your calling no matter what! When you have a purpose, you can focus without being distracted by your haters. The Bible says the face of Jesus was set like a flint toward Jerusalem and His ultimate purpose. Yours should be too.

And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, – Luke 9:51

2) Know something about your haters. The Bible says that when the first king of Israel was anointed, the children of Belial came out to tell him he could never be successful. Here is the guy who is going to take everyone to the next level, and the very people criticizing him are, in fact, worthless, trifling men who are too dysfunctional themselves to get anything done.

Don’t listen to people like that. Don’t let people who can’t get it together keep you from having it together!

3) Know you are in good company. The Bible is filled with great men and women who dealt with haters and naysayers. Jesus Himself said that if the world hates you, it is because it first hated Him. Yes, your family resemblance will work against you because the world is evil and loves darkness. If you are a shining light, you will be persecuted, but take heart, Jesus has overcome the world!

O God, the proud have risen against me, And a mob of violent men have sought my life, And have not set You before them. – Psalms 86:14

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO BE A PERSON OF GODLY VISION AND PURPOSE. IGNORE THE NAYSAYERS AND CALL YOURSELF BLESSED BECAUSE YOU ARE IN GOOD COMPANY!

JESUS, SLAVERY AND ME

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

God has set you free so that you can help set others free. Find those places and pass on the gift of freedom to others!

JESUS, SLAVERY AND ME

There seems to be a hatred for slavery connected to the day I was born. While I was bawlin’ for somebody to turn out the lights, 570 miles east of me, a young black man – a Christian by the name of James Meredith – looked at this hands and saw the color red. He’d just been shot.

An American veteran, Meredith almost died the day I was born. A white sniper thought he deserved to die for trying to go to college. He was the first black student admitted to the University of Mississippi, a flashpoint in the American civil rights movement.

Motivated by his faith and courageous sense of duty, Meredith stood his ground, lived to be an old man and saw his son, Joseph, graduate from the University of Mississippi with a doctorate.

He said, “Nobody and picked me. I believed, and believe now, that I have a divine responsibility…”

On that same day 101 years earlier, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolishing slavery was officially adopted as law.

Lincoln once said, “Slavery is founded on the selfishness of man’s nature. Opposition to it is his love of justice.”

I get all lathered up over injustice and “what ain’t right.” I think it’s part of my destiny to be a redemption fanatic. I love freedom and hate control just like my Father God. He hates it so much, He gave us and His angels free will to choose whether or not we want to be part of His family.

I’m also like my big brother, Jesus.

Hating the chains on our hearts, He left His Father and home in heaven and became a man. He taught people about God’s love and home in heaven, then battled sin on the cross and slapped our slave master, Satan, in the face by rising from the grave three days later.

Yes, human slavery is wrong so why didn’t Jesus abolish it? Because that’s our job. We invented it. You see, He came to destroy a much worse, eternal form of slavery to sin, death and Satan. As free people who love justice because our God is just, you and I have a divine responsibility. Break every chain!

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. – Galatians 5:1

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO SET SOMEONE FREE FROM ETERNAL BONDAGE TO DEATH AND SATAN. TESTIFY TO A GOOD AND JUST GOD. SET A CAPTIVE FREE.

Seven: 7 Lessons for 7 Churches

Sunday, March 27, 2022

Pastor Jerry Sellers, OpenDoor Church, Burleson, TX

As we continue this morning on our series, 7 I would like to start by giving you a little back drop info so we can get a clear and practical understanding why Jesus sent 7 letters to the 7 churches in Revelation.

The book of Revelation is one of the most unique books contained in the 66 books of the Bible. The prophetic imagery given to John throughout the 22 chapters is almost unbelievable to comprehend. Far many people who do not clearly see why John wrote down what he saw view it through lens of fear.

The purpose of the book—especially the 7 letters for the 7 churches—was To strengthen the faith of the members of the present-day churches by giving them the assurance deliverance from the evil powers arrayed against them was close at hand.

In the book of Revelation, the Apostle John wrote about events that would lead to the end of this age. The link between John’s day and the time of Christ’s return is the prophetic time period pictured by seven Church eras outlined in Revelation 2–3.

The letters to the seven churches describe actual conditions in each church at the end of the first century AD. However, the letters are also prophecy of the future. Jesus Christ’s words in these key chapters—chapter 2 & 3 of Revelation—explain the 7 eras, or the 7 periods of the church, and reveal the spiritual condition of God’s Church throughout history —where it has gone astray, and what you and I need to do about it!

The church conditions described in the letters prophetically describe the conditions that would prevail in each successive era. John addressed the book of Revelation “To the seven churches” (Revelation1:4), indicating the letters to each church were to be read in all the churches. We need to understand what these letters reveal about the eras of the Church—especially our modern era—and how their lessons apply to us today.

These seven cities were located roughly thirty to fifty miles apart along a circular road that went north to Pergamum, turned southeast to Laodicea, and returned full circle to Ephesus.

This explains the order the churches are listed. If you were dropping off these letters, you would reach these cities in this order.

Now, it’s interesting that there were actually other churches in this area, some of them more prominent. So why did God choose these cities and these churches?

We know these cities served as the headquarters for the postal districts in these areas. So it might just be a strategic decision. Maybe John (and ultimately Jesus) wanted these letters to get to as many churches and believers as possible. So he sent them to the cities that could most easily make copies and get them out.

But there’s another possibility that is even more likely. All of these cities had temples, priests, or altars dedicated to emperor worship. So perhaps, these letters were written to these cities because they were meant to be attacks on the front lines of the enemy.

It is good to note that every letter follows the same basic structure and form:

Revelation of Christ – At the beginning, there is a description of Christ that is specifically selected for each church from the vision in chapter one.Encouragement – Then, there is encouragement – what is the church doing well? What is Christ pleased with in that church?Rebuke – Next, for 5 out of the 7 churches, there is rebuke.Invitation – At the end of each letter, the message is individualized. Each letter ends with “To the one who overcomes…” So even though the letter is addressed to the church as a whole, the message requires a response from individuals in the church. YOU ARE THE TEMPLE OF GOD. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LOOK AT THESE SEVEN CHURCHES AND SEE YOUR OWN WALK WITH JESUS THROUGH THIS LENS. Reward – And finally, there is a reward mentioned for those who overcome. All of the rewards are pulled from the vision of the New Heavens and New Earth in Revelation 21 and 22.

Let’s quickly look at The Lessons of the 7 Churches

Ephesus: Casual/Complacent Church—“Left its First Love”

Revelation 2:4-5Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

Smyrna: Conflicted Church—Faithful in Trials

Revelation 2:8-10“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, ‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: 9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Pergamos: The Compromising Church

Revelation 2:12-16“And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

Thyatira: The Corrupt Church

Revelation 2:18-21“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 “I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.

Sardis: The Corpse Church—Looked alive because it was financially rich, but inside it was dead.

Revelation 3:1-3 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

Philadelphia: The Consistent Church—Persistent and Faithful

Revelation 3:7-10“And to theangel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens”: 8 “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. 9 Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

Laodicea: Calloused Church/Lukewarm

Revelation 3:14-19“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

The message that Jesus gave these 7 churches is not outdated. It is not timestamped and has no expiration date. It timeless and still valuable to churches and individuals today.

Hebrews 4:12For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It’s a filter we should pour our purpose, passion, perspective and priorities through. It’s a call to action for the church become alive and get up. It’s also a personal challenge to change. It’s a command to clean house even in your own life because you are the temple of God. In the positive, it’s a celebration because of the promise to receive a crown.

The key for the church in 2022 is that we are able to learn from these 7 lessons Jesus gave the 7 churches. Seven times in these 2 chapters, Jesus said, “He that has an ear to hear let him hear what the Spirit says.” What could Holy Spirit be saying to you?

CREATIVE GENIUS

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

God is doing a work in your thought life in those places of anxiety. Think on the joy the Lord brings and He will give you strength.

CREATIVE GENIUS

There’s a group of people I call the “spikey-haired people.” It’s a demographic of creative people and I love creative people because I have a creative side to me. In fact, if I can’t be creative, I start getting mad.

I have learned a huge part of my job is to come up with content – sermons, radio and TV shows, books, songs and the devotion you’re reading right now. I really seek God about the stuff I write.

What I write needs to be fun and full of life. It needs to be all those things Jesus wants it to be, so there’s a creative kind of groove that I’ve got to get into whether putting together a message or writing a song or a book. Over the years, I have found one truth about the creative process:

Anxiety is the kryptonite of creativity.

Anxiety takes you into survival mode. You cannot be creative and fun and come up with fresh, new ideas in survival mode. Believe me, you need to be creative in your thinking every day!

When God is in creative mode, He is so much fun. I love that about God. As the Creator, He can start anything. He can finish anything. He can go back in our timeline to apply the blood of Jesus or work all things for our good today.

We need God to be creative every day because we get into messes every day, and He’s the creative genius who turns ashes to beauty!

To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.  – Isaiah 61: 2-3

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO RECOGNIZE ANXIETY BEFORE IT STEALS YOUR CREATIVE JUICES. CALL ON JESUS FOR DELIVERANCE FROM WHAT IS PULLING YOU DOWN!

WHOSE KINGDOM ARE YOU BUILDING?

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

The harvest is the fruit – ripe, sweet and juicy. Give Me the fruit of your labor, it will feed others. Keep it for yourself, it is bitter. Give Me your harvest. I will keep you full!

WHOSE KINGDOM ARE YOU BUILDING?

You want to see good things in your life and positive outcomes in your relationships, ministry, finances and job. What you’re looking for is fruit – just like the Lord wants to see fruit, or a positive result, from your life.

Know this: The fruit harvest will only happen if you cooperate with God and work with His agenda.

If you aren’t interested in the Spirit of the Lord, if you’re not going to seek Him whenever He tells you to seek Him, and don’t have a value for His word, if you don’t have a value for Him showing up in your prayer life, there’s never going to be a harvest.

The harvest only happens if you and I cooperate with God and His agenda. Yes, He has an agenda for the unredeemed parts of your life, the unredeemed parts of this city and nation. You have to work with Him for His agenda. It’s His Kingdom you are building, not your own.

I know I’ve been guilty over and over of trying to build my own kingdom. However, when I put God first and really go after Kingdom things, I start producing fruit. You have to be concerned with that because it’s everlasting.

Do not be fooled. God will not be mocked. So a man sows, so shall he reap. – Galatians 6:7

Want to reap fruit in your life and the Kingdom? Stop mocking God with your efforts to glorify yourself. Start building His Kingdom by plowing up the hard, fallow ground in your life. Plant love, life and redemption!

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO VALUE GOD’S PLAN FOR YOU. RIP UP REBELLION BY THE ROOTS AND PLANT A SEED OF REDEMPTION IN YOUR LIFE.

TRESPASSES, INIQUITIES AND IDOLS

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

You are mine and I am yours!  Our relationship is like no other! No thing and no one will satisfy you. I am the One True God who is and was and always will be.

TRESPASSES, INIQUITIES AND IDOLS

When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, He was saying, “We’re going to have a book written in stone and you’re going down there to blow everybody’s mind.”

Then God said, “Oh, and I want you to make a real big deal out of the second one.”

You shall not make for yourself a carved image and likeness of anything but that is in the heaven above, the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and forth generations of those who hate me.  – Exodus 20:4-5

Notice God says He will visit the iniquities – not the trespasses – of the fathers down to the third and fourth generation. What does that mean? There is a difference between trespasses and iniquities.

In the book of Isaiah, the Bible says, “He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for iniquities.” A wound is when you bleed on the outside, so a transgression is when you sin on the outside.

A bruise is when you bleed on the inside. An iniquity is something you’re born with. It’s on the inside, in the DNA. When you sin on the inside, it’s because of your iniquity. You can say, “I’m not responsible for my sin. I was born this way!” You’re right. You were.

But you have to take responsibility because you have a choice – to hate God or love Him. When you turn to idols instead of Jesus, the consequences are not only dire, they get passed down to your kids and their kids because you teach it to them.

So what’s your god? Self? Entertainment? Money? Work? Relationships? Ministry? Achievement? Whatever it is, it’s a poor substitute – or idol – for God Almighty. You have a choice. Choose God and He will bless your bloodline.

…But showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep my commandments. – Exodus 20:6

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO OVERCOME YOUR INIQUITY. CHOOSE TO LOVE AND FOLLOW JESUS. LEAD THE WAY FOR YOUR GENERATIONS TO COME.

HATE MAIL

TODAY’S PROPHETIC THOUGHT

Don’t let hatred block you from moving forward. Combat hatred with love and know that Jesus will reward you no matter the other person’s response.

HATE MAIL

I didn’t anticipate the problem I’d have with hatred since being on the radio. I always thought it would be cool to be protested or to get hate mail. It’s not.

I’m being real when I admit to you I have problems. I’ve had a difficult time dealing with the hostility that comes with being a public figure, and I want to repent of that. It’s not just me. There are all kinds of good guys among us that the world despises.

Right now in our culture, the good guys are attacked while thieves, wife beaters, drug addicts and murderers are celebrated. Just watch reality TV. Despite being some of the most messed up people in the world, they have high ratings and an international following on Twitter and Facebook.

This should not come as a surprise. The Bible says the day when good is called evil and evil is called good will come. It’s here. Why do they hate us? Because of the Name.

“You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”  – Matthew 10:22-24

Jesus warned us we will be hated for His name’s sake. If you do good works and show kindness on behalf of the heart and name of Jesus, you will be hated. You need to wrap your brain around the pushback you will get for serving the poor, setting the enslaved free and supporting Israel. Satan hates Jesus and anything that resembles Him. In the context of serving, we are acting in His image.

Know this: He who endures to the end will be saved. It’s not going to get better. It will only get worse and we need to expect that, and even welcome it. Satan only attacks threats to his evil kingdom. If you’re not hated or attacked, maybe you’re not a threat.

Want to be dangerous to the enemy? Want to serve the poor, free slaves and tell the world about a good God and savior who is not mad at them? I do. Even if I’m hated.

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO BECOME A THREAT TO THE DEVIL. SERVE. LOVE. WORSHIP. WHEN THE WORLD ATTACKS YOUR KIND EFFORTS, DO EVEN MORE GOOD IN JESUS’ NAME!
