Hello from The Waiting Room

Before we even get started, no, I'm not writing this blog from a hospital. Or doctor's office. Or car dealership. I have this thing I call The Waiting Room. Characters, some anonymous, some I know already...some with only really amazing eyes or a killer chest (yes, my Waiting Room can sometimes look like the Makeup trailer for a war movie), introduce themselves to me and poof! off on a story tangent. But I call it The Waiting Room because I make them wait there until I'm ready. The rule for T...

Rom-Con 2014, Here I Come!

romcon badge

Yesterday, I did something exciting! I signed up for Rom-Con! I am so freaking excited! A chance to get to spend time with other romance writers, meet readers and have some fun!

Along with being excited, I am so nervous!

I am very shy when I meet strangers. I don't do it well. I turn red, stammer and generally make a fool of myself.

Ergh.

The general public thinks writing is a solitary thing. That may have been true in Hemingway's time, or Shakespeare's. But nowadays, writing, if you wan...

Welcome Gail Kittleson

Join the Wranglers in welcoming my friend Gail Kittleson to the corral today. She has interesting new answers to my same old questions!
When did you know you were a writer? Or do you know it even now? (Sometimes I have doubts about myself.)
Does knowing I was SUPPOSED TO BE a writer count? I’ve known that since I was a kid. As a young adult, I hid what I wrote, coming out once in a while to have a poem published in a magazine.
Now that I’ve learned about the writing personality, I sure wish I’d...

Is Your Filter in Place?

I like characters who don't have a filter. I don't mean characters who say things just to be cruel, but characters who say what's on their minds. But real people with no filter? Not so much. While no filter may be cute coming from babies and little old ladies, (Sophia was my favorite Golden Girl) it's not cute when coming out of the mouth of someone whose main goal is to be mean.

Blake and Ella, characters in my latest book, Ella Ever After, are the type of people...

The Bee Experience

I don't have a writing lesson or a tale of encouragement but I do have my bee experience.

A couple of weeks ago, we discovered a bee hive in our yard. Literally imbedded in our yard.

See the hive to your left? It's in the ground. In my yard.

Kinda cool, huh?

My friend did a little research and she determined they were miner bees. I Googled miner bees and became fascinated and quite proud that they had decided to share my space. Although I'm giving them clear berth.

Later that day, I sent a pi...

How Do You Spell Success?

Yesterday D'Ann had a great post about chasing rainbows (and dreams) and giving yourself some tough-love in the process.

Yesterday was also bebe's first day of Kindergarten. She awoke at 6:40, ready to run off to school...and was a little disappointed that she had to 1) eat breakfast 2) brush her teeth 3) get dressed and then 4) *wait* for the bus to arrive before she could leave. And when it did arrive, she gave us a backward wave and stomp-jumped up the steps, introduced herself to the drive...

Chasing Rainbows!

I took this picture earlier this summer. It was in the field up the road from me. I got in the car and drove a ways to get a better look. Of course, the closer I got, the further it moved. There was no way I was ever going to get to that rainbow. It's a lot like writing. What the heck are you talking about, D'Ann, you ask?

Just that so many people go into publishing with the idea that because they wrote a book they have
arrived! Book tours, book signings, and yes, money a...

A little vacation of the soul

In 1999, I read The House on Olive Street, by Robyn Carr. It was a game-changer. Itwasn’t the first women’s fiction title I’d read—though they were definitely harder to find in those days—but it was the first one that made me realize something. And, more than that, admit it.
I like women.          No, not that way, though “that way” is fine with me. What I mean i...
