Throwback Thursday – Choosing Chuckles
Chuckles is the most adorably grumpy warrior in the cyborg universe. He’s grouchy for a reason – he’s permanently injured and that causes him pain.
But that grouchiness hides the softest of hearts. And Chuckles has absolutely no defenses against Bettina, his bubbly chaos-causing human female.
I love these two together. (grins)
Choosing Chuckles
A Cynical Cyborg Meets A Bad, Bad Female.
Chuckles hates all humans. In the past, humans betrayed him. That treachery caused permanent damage to his muscular form, resulting in a lifespan of pain.

But she can’t let him go. She has to trap him. His dominance thrills her. His deep voice evokes desires she’d never experienced in the past. She’ll risk it all, breaking every rule for one wild encounter with the male she calls Sir.

Grin And Bare Him And Lore
In Grin And Bare Him, the next story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing next week), Grin, Strive and Raw travel to Mercury Minor, the home planet of the Rebel Cyborgs.
Eirene Ours (Cadet) is the leader of the Rebel Cyborgs. She’s not on Mercury Minor, however, when the three cyborgs arrive. She’s off planet with Power.
Lore is the cyborg temporarily in the leadership role. He is coordinating Raw’s rendezvous with his not-yet-seen female.
One of the reasons Lore is trusted by Eirene Ours is… he doesn’t share information that isn’t essential. He has been part of her team during their secret missions. He is accustomed to not transmitting, to hiding their existence from the universe.
That means the three cyborgs don’t know really what to expect on Mercury Minor. (grins) ANYTHING could (and does) happen.

Muse Food – Woolly Bears
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this little guy in our back yard.
He’s a woolly bear caterpillar, the larval form of the isabella tiger moth, and he’s a fascinating creature.
He hatches from his egg in the fall.
Then, when winter and the snow comes, he freezes solid. His heart stops beating. His guts freeze. His blood freezes. And finally the rest of his body freezes.
In the spring, he thaws and goes about his usual business. (grins)
Yes, he’s proof beings can be completely frozen and survive. That doesn’t merely happen in SciFi Romances.
Oh, and yes, I am heartbreakingly aware climate change is going to make it very difficult for the woolly bears to survive. These warm temperatures aren’t good for these little creatures.

Grin And Bare Him – Fourth Scene Of The First Chapter
Grin And Bare Him, the second story in the Cyborg Unity series, releases next week! Woot!

During the voyage to Mercury Minor, Grin and Strive helped Raw formulate a plan they projected would completely conquer his female emotionally.
They armed him with human-friendly compliments and courting strategies they had located in various databases. Strive crafted two additional decorative panels utilizing the same floral theme. Grin drafted the blueprints for a unique domicile suited for human females.
Their plan was perfect.
Except for one detail.
Raw hadn’t been given an opportunity to implement it.
They were six planet rotations and one shift away from the planet, and their friend’s genetic match hadn’t yet accepted any of his communications.
“She could be damaged.” The warrior expressed that fear. “That would explain why she’s offline.”
“Ask our contact on Mercury Minor if she’s fully functional.” Grin monitored the state of the test panels. All were intact.
“If I ask Lore that question, he’ll process I’m not communicating with my female.” Raw slowed the warship’s speed. “There’s an 85.2588 percent probability he’ll speak with the leadership team on Mercury Minor and with the cyborg council on the Homeland, and a 47.2365 percent probability they’ll then withdraw our authorization to land on the planet.” Landing privileges on the planet were severely rationed. “I’ll lose the opportunity to claim my female.”
“That projection is sound.” Strive surprised Grin by agreeing with their friend.
The two males had heatedly debated every decision they’d made during the voyage.
Grin suspected they enjoyed the arguments.
“And there’s no need to ask the question. Your female is fully functional. She also remains on Mercury Minor,” Strive told Raw. “Lore processes who you are traveling to meet. He would’ve contacted you if she was damaged or missing.”
“Lore would process the state of your female.” Grin nodded. “He—”
A light on the bridge’s console flashed.
“He’s contacting us now.” Raw opened communications. “This is Raw. We will arrive in six planet rotations and one shift.”
“That landing has been authorized.” Lore’s face appeared on the main viewscreen. “I’m sending you the coordinates.”
The location of the landing site appeared below his image.
“Warriors will greet you as you disembark from your vessel.” The cyborg’s words were clipped. “I’ll be amongst them. We’ll escort you to your female’s chamber.”
“My female won’t be waiting at the coordinates?” Raw lifted his eyebrows.
There was a telling pause.
Grin exchanged a glance with Strive.
That didn’t project good things.
“Your female won’t be waiting at the landing site,” Lore finally responded. “She’ll be occupying her chamber.”
No new information was relayed.
There was another stretch of silence.
Ask him why she won’t be greeting you upon our landing. Strive urged Raw through their shared transmission line.
I’m not jeopardizing the claiming of my female. Raw was being unusually cautious.
Grin agreed with the male’s stance. He projected Lore processed they wanted more intel and was deliberately withholding it.
“During your stay on Mercury Minor, you’ll be approached by one or more beings requesting transport off the planet.” Lore changed the subject. “Refuse those requests. And guard your ship.”
Grin frowned. “You’re not allowing beings to leave the planet?”
The male’s face hardened. “The being most aggressively seeking to leave Mercury Minor plans to travel to a Humanoid Alliance-controlled planet. She’s a fragile, fully organic humanoid, and there’s an 84.2563 percent probability she’ll be killed on her self-appointed mission. We prefer to safeguard her until she is claimed by her warrior. That warrior can then modify her processing.”
“That’s logical.” Grin had been thoroughly chastised.
“All our decisions are logical.” Lore’s tone was snippy. “We await your arrival.”
The male ended the communication.
“That unidentified warrior will have a challenging task once he meets his female.” Grin shook his head. “She sounds determined to end her lifespan.”
“I envy that warrior,” Strive shared softly.
“I envy him also.” Grin swallowed a sigh. He wouldn’t be the humanoid female’s male. She required a warrior, and he refused to hold that role. “I’ll take the first shift guarding the warship.”
He would utilize that time to examine the test panels.
“You can have the first shift and the second one also.” Raw increased the warship’s speed. “While you’re guarding the warship, I’ll meet with my female. We’ll talk. Finally. I’ll wield all the right words, sharing with her the statements the two of you have crafted for me. She’ll have no defenses against my advances. My female will agree to breed with me, and I’ll be the most fortunate warrior in the universe.”
He sounded as though he was trying to convince himself that progression of events would occur.
“I’ll be exploring the planet.” Strive stretched out his body armor-clad legs. “Warriors have been chattering about the wide-open spaces on Mercury Minor. There are trees higher than domiciles, and large fields of yellow grasses, and no beings within visual range.”
Grin had heard that chatter also. Mercury Minor was covered with restored soil. It was lush and fertile and had few inhabitants.
The Homeland, in contrast, was crowded with beings, both on the planet’s surface and in the ships orbiting high above it. There were no wide-open spaces, very little vegetation, and there were many, many structures.
Some of them had been designed by him.
He might find inspiration for more structure fabrications on Mercury Minor. Being in a different environment should encourage different ideas, and his surroundings would be quiet and peaceful. There would be plenty of space to test materials.
Grin’s lips curled upward.
His duration on the planet would be conducive to working.
Other cyborgs might not relish that prospect.
He embraced it with his entire being.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – November 13th
We’re creeping closer to the release day for Grin And Bare Him. Yes! I can’t wait for you to read this story, my friends. It is a bit lighter-in-tone than the other core cyborg romances and I dig that. (grins)
I’m still working on Raw Desires, the third story in the Cyborg Unity series. I really enjoy bringing the two cyborg factions together. That unity will be needed because the Humanoid Alliance is planning…well…badness for the universe.

Rosaline And Shrewish Characters
Note: This post will talk about the Enemies-to-Lovers Romance movie Rosaline. If you haven’t yet watched this fun, light-hearted, HEA film, you might want to skip this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Rosaline, a YA movie based on the book When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle. This story covers some of the scenes in Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet but from Rosaline’s POV.
We both really enjoyed this movie. It was light and fun and had the expected Romance ending. The soundtrack was awesome. The two main characters had delicious chemistry. And their romance had layers. I could see how they would grow together as a couple.
One of the (many) things it did well is give us a likable ‘shrew’ heroine and that’s very difficult to do. Often shrew characters are so harsh they’re mean. Or they are so soft they’re not truly shrew characters.
Rosaline balances this well. She will list everything she hates but then she’ll admit she does likes something. She’ll tell her hero off and then she’ll ask if he’s coming with her or not. She’ll say something harsh and then immediately and visibly regret it.
I liked her as a heroine. And I understood why her hero falls in love with her.

Remembrance Day 2022
Today is Remembrance Day here in Canada. We commemorate all those who served, who have protected us on and off the battlefield.
I always think of my Great Uncle Frank on Remembrance Day. His wartime experiences changed him forever. (You can read his story here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ) He sacrificed so much to keep us safe.
I also think of him when I write. And I think of the other warriors I’ve met. They were willing to trade their lives to protect us.
That’s my definition of a hero.
Their service and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord’s Mercy
I’m a pantser, a writer who writes by the seat of her pants, someone who doesn’t have any idea where a story is going when she sits down to write.
I didn’t know how the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series would end, but I assumed, Tolui, the big baddie, would eventually die…because that is what big baddies do in romance novels – they die. I assumed the Warlord brothers would work together to defeat him. Permanently.
I was as surprised as many reading buddies were to find out Tolui would be the hero of his own story. The dang male refused to die. His mission was noble. He is deserving of a love to last forever.
And he is one of my all time favorite heroes.
Other Chameles view him as theenemy.
She sees the warrior hero he neverbelieved he could be.

Tolui is a Warlord in search of a planetto rule. He has been leading his fellow clones in a stealth battle, fightingfor both control of the Chamele sector and the right to exist. The brave warriorshe commands warrant respect, and they deserve the best.

Grin And Bare Him And The Definition Of Normal
Humans are pack animals. Most humans like to fit into groups. They like to be ‘normal.’
The definition of normal changes with each group of people.
In Canada, for example, it is normal to apologize when others are upset even if we did nothing wrong.
In New York City, in contrast, locals will look at you as though you’re an alien (or a Canadian, which is pretty much the same thing – grins) if you apologize for something you had no influence over. It isn’t normal to apologize for everything in New York City.
This shifting view of what is normal can be challenging to navigate.
For cyborgs, the definition of normal is more concise. They were manufactured to meet certain specs. That is ‘normal’ for them.
A normal cyborg, for example, is a skilled warrior. That was their primary purpose, was why they were manufactured. Any cyborg who refused to fight or who fought poorly risked being decommissioned or killed by the Humanoid Alliance.
Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing soon!), processes he’s not normal. He’s aware he isn’t the cyborg everyone expects him to be.
And that ‘everyone’ includes the sexy female trying to steal his ship.

Muse Food – Chess And Other Strategy Games
Battle scenes and love scenes are very similar. They are often constructed with an action, followed by a physical reaction and usually an emotional reaction.
Something like…
He strokes her chest. She arches her back. Desire sweeps through her.
or
She swings her sword. He blocks the blow. Excitement courses through his circuits.
It reminds me of a game of chess. There’s a move. Then there’s a countermove.
When I’m stuck in a scene, I often jot down a random action and then I think how the other beings in that scene would react to it. That often gets my creativity flowing.
