The School For Good And Evil And Expectations
Warning – I’m talking about the Netflix movie – The School For Good And Evil – in this post. There will be some (mild) spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip this discussion.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched The School For Good And Evil on Netflix. This fairy tale magical academy movie was based on the book by Soman Chainani and we quite enjoyed it. It was light and fun and had a girl power message.
It also does a brilliant job at using our expectations to create plot twists.
Sophie and Agatha are best friends. But they seem more different than similar.
Agatha wears all black. She loves her cat and her potion-creating mom. She has all the makings of the stereotypical witch in the fairy tales.
Sophie dresses in bright, happy colors. She’s a gifted seamstress and she dreams of being the princess she resembles.
When they’re transported to the School for Good and Evil, we assume Sophie will be placed in the good school and Agatha (whom I LOVE) will be placed in the evil school.
But the exact opposite happens. They are placed, they believe, in the ‘wrong’ schools, becoming instant and obvious outcasts.
I thought this was superbly done and I was extremely inspired by it.

Throwback Thursday – Doc’s Orders
One of the interesting aspects of writing SciFi Romance is making predictions about the future. I do that by researching what scientists and other leaders are working on or worrying about today.
When I wrote Doc’s Orders, one of the things that was worrying scientists was the possibility of a worldwide pandemic. This was LONG before COVID-19 happened. Scientists were sounding the alarms, telling everyone who would listen that we were due for a serious pandemic.
The deadly spread of diseases is also a factor of many exploration campaigns here on Earth. Newcomers bring new diseases, diseases the local population weren’t exposed to.
That would also be an issue with space exploration. Stars, it is already a factor. Bacteria and other lifeforms have hitched rides on spacecraft and have spread to explored planets/moons.
Anyhoo… Doc’s Orders DOES feature a pandemic. This story is a cyborg romance, however, and has the expected happy romance ending. (smiles)
Doc’s Orders
She wants both sides of her cyborg—the medic AND the beast.
A fully functional cyborg is balanced. His machine half and his organic half work together to produce the perfect warrior.
Doc isn’t fully functional.
The G Model operates at the two extremes. When his machine is in complete control, he’s the logic-driven medic, saving lifespans. Once his organics take charge, he becomes the savage beast…and beings die.
Both sides of Doc want to be the first to claim his female.
Allinen is one of the few beings in her small settlement who wasn’t born with a fated mate. Determined to belong somewhere, she has crafted a plan to leave the planet.
That plan doesn’t involve a huge stormy-eyed male who alternates between cool seduction and out-of-control ravishment. Doc isn’t her fated mate. Allinen knows that. But his dual nature and forbidden embraces tempt her to forget forever and indulge in more immediate delights.
Neither side of Doc views their relationship as being temporary. Her conflicted cyborg is prepared to battle her family, her planet and death itself to keep her.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord’s Return
One of the many things I love about Warlord’s Return is… it takes us full circle.
The first story in the series, Warlord Sky, begins with the Chamele warriors returning to their home planet after a visit to the Refuge.
This final story in the series begins with the Chamele warriors leaving their home planet for a visit to the Refuge.
This story also bridges series. The Refuge is the home of the heroes and heroines from the Refuge/Dark Thoughts series. The Chamele stories reside in the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series.
And Warlord’s Return features a mini-dragon. (grins) I LOVE dragons.

Ariq is a barbarian warrior seeking a war.
He locates that battle when he meets Xareni.

Ariq finds that conflict and more when he meets his fatedmate.
Xareni owes the Ruler of the Refuge a favor. That’s the onlyreason she has returned to the settlement. She doesn’t like crowds orstructures or a certain barbarian warrior who insists on following hereverywhere. It doesn’t matter that there’s a connection between them, that hemakes her burn with desire, that he looks at her with heat in his dark eyes.
She’s a monster and monsters don’t need anyone.

I LOVE the cover for Grin And Bare Him (designed by the always awesome Amanda Kelsey). I think it illustrates what a complex hero Grin is.
He’s a cyborg, a being manufactured to fight, and he LOOKS like a warrior. He’s huge and muscular and a daunting presence.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – November 20th
Woot! Grin And Bare Him releases on Tuesday (Monday night if you’ve pre-ordered it)! I’m so fraggin’ excited for you to read this story, my friends. (flying hugs) I love Grin. I love Mohini. I love the other beings you’ll meet in Grin And Bare Him. It is such a fun adventure.

Why You Should Pre-order Grin And Bare Him

If You Wish To Re-Read Stories
Grin And Bare Him, releasing on Tuesday (Monday night if you’ve pre-ordered it), can be read on its own. New-to-me readers will be able to follow the story easily.
But if you wish to re-read some of the previous stories, I suggest starting with Provoking Odium, of course. That’s the first story in Cyborg Unity and we meet Mohini, the heroine, in that story.
We first meet Grin in Breathing Vapor. That’s another story you might enjoy re-reading. Raw and Strive, the next two heroes, first appear in that story also.
Those are the two key stories. Seizing Power is another closely-connected story and it explains the friction between the two cyborg factions.
