Scream 5 And Requels
Please Note – I will be talking about Scream 5 in this post and there might be spoilers posted. If you haven’t yet watched Scream 5, you might want to skip this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Scream 5 recently and we really enjoyed it. We haven’t watched all of the Scream movies but we have watched the first one and that was key to our enjoyment. Scream 5 assumes you’ve watched that movie (but it reminds you of the plot so there is no need to remember everything).
Scream 5 is a movie about requels and it is, ironically, a requel itself.
What is a requel?
As per Charles T. White, “My take on what a requel is when a new movie in a franchise/series is a sequel to the original movie but is also a remake at the same time.
Usually, requels ignore all the other movies in a franchise and just become a sequel to the original movie.
Also, the title of requels are usually just the original name (first name of the first movie in that series) and they bring new and legacy characters into the story.”
I LOVE requels. I didn’t know there was a name for it until Scream 5. But I have always loved them.
They give fans MUCH more content because the original is still…well…original.
They honor the past stories and the past characters. They give us updates on those characters.
Yet they modernize the franchises. There were clever treatments of technology in Scream 5 that they couldn’t do in the original Scream (phones are fraggin’ scary).
And they allow the creators to add twists and these twists are SO important to scary movies. We, viewers, don’t want to be able to predict when the baddie will jump out from the shadows.
I can’t yet envision how requels could be used in a Romance Novel series. Our books tend to be timeless. But I’m certain some writers will do this very well in the future. I look forward to reading their twists on requels!

Muse Food – Why Choose?
I’m a real dumba$$. (grins)
I often stress about the coloring for aliens. I’ve done quite a few purple alien species, blue alien species, green, orange, other colors. And I don’t want to repeat colors but there are only so many hues.
IF the alien is merely one color.
Look at this beautiful macaw we spotted in the Dominican Republic.
They are white, red, blue, green, AND yellow.
Aliens are likely to sport a variety of colors also. They can be green AND blue. Or orange AND brown. Or any number of different combinations.
I shouldn’t restrict myself to only one!

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – April 9

Yes, I continue to work on the first draft of Strive For Forever, the fourth core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in July). The first, second AND third drafts should be completed this month. Expect the updates to change soon!

Why Are Strive, Raw And Grin Friends?
Strive, Raw and Grin are three very different cyborgs personality-wise. Sometimes it is challenging to see why they would be such good friends.
They are all the same model, are all K models. They look similar. They were manufactured in the same vat, were trained in the same facility, escaped at the same time.
But so were hundreds of other cyborgs.
Strive and Grin formed an early bond because neither of them enjoy battle, which is unusual for cyborgs. They want to create, not destroy.
Raw admired that about Strive and Grin. He valued their non-warrior personalities so much he was willing to fight, to kill, to perhaps die to protect them.
All three of them respect, value, and truly LIKE each other. Their differences make them stronger as friends.

Help Others Today To Help Yourself
Whenever I feel a bit down, I help another being and I immediately feel better.
I was of service. I made another person’s world a little happier. I changed THEIR view of their day.
And that usually changes MY view of MY day.
That help is often tiny.
I might give a drooping plant growing between the cracks in the pavement a little drink of water. Or share news about another writer’s book release. Or hold the door open for someone. Or leave a heavily bruised apple out for the mafia squirrels.
It doesn’t have to be a big effort.
Because little acts of kindness matter.
Try this. It could be the best thing you do for yourself all day.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Cure
Dark Cure is the final story in the Refuge (Dark Thoughts) series. I think of it as a bridge story to the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series.
Because the hero is a Chamele warrior. Oghul has claws and has a barbarian feel to him. And he is destined to have one genetic match.
His match is Gisella, the Refuge’s human medic. Gisella doesn’t believe in forever. She knows, very well, that everything ends so she lives in the moment.
Oghul is determined to change her view. (grins)
A warrior seeking forever faces a medic living in the moment.
Gisella, the Refuge’s medic, is dedicated to her role. She doesn’t have the space in her lifespan for love, a mate, or children. Healing is her entire focus.

The Similarity Of Alien Planets
Humans have adapted specifically to life here on Earth.
The range of acceptable oxygen levels in breathable air, for us, for example, is very narrow. The optimal oxygen level for humans is about 21 percent. If oxygen levels fall below 19.5 percent for an extended period of time, bad things start to happen. If oxygen levels increase above 23.5 percent for an extended period of time, bad things start to happen.
We’re as sensitive to other gases and minerals. And to temperature (which is why a 1.5C increase is a BIG deal). And to gravity.
And…well…to almost everything else around us.
What this, unfortunately, means is for us to be able to live naturally (i.e. outside of a climate-controlled structure) on another planet, that planet has to closely resemble Earth.
The human females in my cyborg romances might temporarily visit planets with different specs. But they have to wear suits while venturing outside their ships.
They will be found and/or want to live permanently on alien planets that are similar to our own wonderful Earth.

Death On The Nile And Guessing Twists
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk very generally about the movie Death On The Nile. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Death On The Nile, the 2022 movie based on the Agatha Christie novel. Neither of us had read the book or watched any early versions of this story.
Yet we both guessed who killed the first victim a scene before the body was discovered.
That might have been the director’s expectation.
It might have been a romance novel situation.
In romance novels, we almost always immediately know who will end up happy, in love and in a relationship. Heck, the book description indirectly tells us that information! (grins) If the description talks about Raw and Taytu, Raw and Taytu will be in a happy, loving relationship in the last chapter of the story.
Maybe we were expected to know who did it early in the Death On The Nile movie. Maybe, as with romance novels, we were expected to enjoy the journey to that obvious conclusion.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I did enjoy the journey. The sets were amazing and we both love Egypt.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Fire
Dark Fire combines many of my favorite types of stories.
It has a dragon-like hero. It is an alien romance. The hero is a warrior. The heroine is a thief. There is plenty of action and heated encounters and a dash of humor.
It is a fun, thrilling story and I think you’ll really enjoy it!

What the Beast wants, the Beast gets.
Dare’s savage nature has made him an outcast among his kind. The silver-scaled Dracheon warrior can’t control his inner beast. It’s too strong. When his primitive instincts told him his destined mate was on Carinae E, he had no choice. He had to travel to the outlaw planet. There, he hoped to meet a female powerful enough to survive his Drache.
He finds Faylee, a delicate little human.
Faylee is the best thief on the planet. Everyone she encounters mistakes her for a young boy…except for a tall, shiny warrior from off-planet. When she gazes into Dare’s flame-filled eyes, he makes her feel, for the first time, like a desirable female. The fire-breathing male has her yearning for hot kisses, fierce embraces, and a future filled with love. She doesn’t realize mating with him might be the last thing she ever does.
