Throwback Thursday – Seizing Power
I view Seizing Power as one of the big finales of the cyborg world stories. It brings together many couples (and more) from previous stories
Power is the leader of the Cyborg Council. He believes he’s the leader of all cyborgs everywhere.
Cadet i.e. Eirene Ours is the leader of the Rebel Cyborgs, the defiant warriors living on Mercury Minor.
These two determined cyborgs are enemies. They are also, although Power doesn’t realize this yet, genetic matches. They are destined to be together.
If they don’t kill each other and millions of cyborgs first.
Seizing Power
This cyborg believes he’s in control.
Power is the self-appointed leader of the cyborg council. Other members might debate situations. He makes the ultimate decisions.
When a threat to Homeland is revealed, he takes command of a fleet and ventures to the edge of cyborg-controlled space to investigate. He finds a rebellion led by a mysterious upstart he calls Cadet.
The plan Power derives is simple—he’ll quickly quash the uprising and teach its leader a lesson the warrior will never forget.
NO ONE challenges his authority.
Eirene Ours might be called a cadet by Power but she is NOT his subordinate. She is the arrogant E Model’s genetic match.
For much of her mature lifespan, she has desired the male, yearning for his dark-eyed gaze, craving his sure hands, longing for his respect.
That esteem was never granted. And Eirene Ours can no longer wait to earn it. There’s an external threat to their kind, a danger that might destroy them all.
Having lured Power to her home terrain, she now plans to use everything within her means — her fists, her daggers, her ship-destroying missiles — to pound that truth into her stubborn warrior’s thick metal skull.
The future of every cyborg is at stake. She can’t fail them.

Raw Desires – First Scene Of The First Chapter
Woot! The countdown to the release day for Raw Desires is on!
And that means I am allowed to share the first chapter while we wait.
Today, I’m sharing the very first scene.

Chapter One
Taytu crouched by her mom’s grave. “I buried a boy from the Semeni settlement this planet rotation.” His body had been partially hidden between the roots of a tree in a nearby forest. “I missed him on the last twelve searches.”
She uncovered fewer and fewer of the dead with each trek around her tiny home planet.
“He’ll be at peace now.” That was the least she could do for one of her kind. She’d been far away, attending an off-planet academy when the Humanoid Alliance and their heartless cyborgs had brutally slaughtered the conflict-adverse Abebans. By the time she was informed of the massacre and had arranged transport home, there was nothing left to do but bury the bodies.
And plot her revenge. Her fingers folded into tight fists.
“The enemy will have no peace.” She felt a tinge of guilt after issuing that statement. “I know you don’t approve of my plans, Mom. If you were here, you would tell me to lay down my anger before it eats me alive. But I don’t have your gentle heart.”
She’d always struggled with the serenity her kind practiced. Her parents had sent her to the academy with the hope she’d find oneness with the universe there.
That was the only reason she had survived.
“I am the last Abeban.” That truth ravaged her soul. “And my heart holds no kindness for our enemy.”
They would pay for what they’d done to her family, friends, and neighbors. She touched the carved stick that marked her mom’s final resting spot.
All around her, thousands of sticks dotted the terrain. Every one represented a soul lost.
When she arrived on the planet, the stench had been overpowering. Her nose wrinkled.
She’d buried everybody, performed a service for each being, carved their grave marker.
And she had trained. She’d studied the enemy, watching footage, replicating their movements, learning their tactics and their strategies.
With each self-taught lesson, she had become more and more like warriors she despised. Her kind’s culture of peace was cast aside. She molded herself into a being who could ruthlessly end lifespans.
The trap she’d set for the enemy was as carefully designed. Every possibility was considered.
It was…perfect. Satisfaction coursed through her.
When the cyborgs returned, they would die.
There was no doubt in her mind they would come back to Yebeti Abeba. They had forgotten two of their killers in one of the death machines they’d left on the planet.
Human corpses sporting Humanoid Alliance officer uniforms had been found on the bridge. The males must’ve misjudged the landing.
The cyborgs were sealed in the cargo hold of the vessel. They would serve as bait for her trap.
“I’ll end as many of their worthless lifespans as I can.” Taytu pressed her lips together. “I’ll lay my anger at their feet and it will consume them.” As it had consumed her. “Then I’ll join you in the land beyond.”
Her skills as a warrior were now adequate, and she’d have the advantage of surprise when the enemy arrived. She was confident she could kill at least one cyborg.
But she would be facing more than that. The warriors never operated alone. And they were manufactured for battle. The cyborgs would defend themselves. They would counterattack.
And they would kill her. She wouldn’t defeat all of them.
Taytu had accepted her impending death. It was a sacrifice she was willing, was eager to make.
There was nothing in the universe left for her. Everyone she loved was now gone.
All she had was a lifespan of loneliness, of regret.
And a heart filled with vengeance.
She straightened. “Ask the deities to forgive me, Mom.” She missed her family, her friends, and her neighbors so very much. The grief carved into the core of her. The sorrow shrouded her like a cape. “We’ll be together then.” She wiped the wetness from her cheeks. “Your goodness should offset the actions I’ll soon take.”
Abeban deities spoke of forgiveness. They should be equally forgiving of her response to the killing of her kind.
If they weren’t…
Fuck them.
Another wave of guilt swept over her. “I didn’t mean that.” She glanced upward at the cloud-filled sky. “Don’t smite me.” She paused. “Not until I’ve done what I have to do.”
And that was to kill as many cyborgs as possible.
She looked at the grave marker. “I love you, Mom. Tell Dad I love him also. And the others. I love them all, and I’m sorry, I’m sorry I wasn’t with them. But I’ll join them soon.”
Once the killing was over.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – January 22nd
This week, I continued to work on the first draft of Strive For Forever, the fourth core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in June).
You’ll be hearing this same update for a while. (grins) I’m not the fastest writer in the universe.
But hey, I get stories written. Slow and steady really DOES win the race!

Raw Desires And Warrior Heroes
Raw, the hero of Raw Desires, the third core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in February), is a warrior. His two best buddies, Grin and Strive, don’t hold warrior roles.
Grin is a structure designer, a space architect (grins). Strive is an artist.
But they both have the ability (somewhat) to fight. Because they’re cyborgs. They were manufactured for battle.
I suspect, in the future, most of my cyborg heroes will be warriors. That’s their core programming.
There WILL be cyborgs holding other roles, however. Cyborgs and their genetic matches need to eat. Someone has to fabricate their nourishment. They need structures to live and work in. They need body armor and flight suits to wear. Spaceships have to be flown. And their souls will seek to be nourished with art.
Their roles are expanding and I find that exciting!

Ordering Seeds And The Power Of Small
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have been ordering seeds for this upcoming outdoor gardening season (likely starting in May).
We ordered 500 spinach seeds.
The regular packet of spinach seeds we see in the dollar store or other places holds 50 seeds.
So the packet we ordered should have been 10 times as big, right?
Nope. It is the same sized packet. And it still had space for double that amount.
Seeds are amazingly small and light and it often feels like we’re buying a whole lot of nothing. But those 500 seeds, if half of them germinate, could supply the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I with spinach for almost five years.
There’s life in that tiny packet. There’s power. There’s energy.
I think of that when I write about a small heroine. She might be tiny but she’s often powerful. (grins)

Throwback Thursday – B Free
B is a VERY old, VERY primitive warrior. He has known loss – loss of everyone he trained with, matured with, cared for. He is the last of his kind.
Or so he believes.
He intercepts a message that implies another B Model has been located.
When he tracks down the sender of that message, he discovers something even more miraculous – he has found his genetic match, a female who makes him feel like a newly manufactured cyborg.
Unfortunately, she is surrounded by the undead.
B Free
B is the last remaining B Model cyborg. All of his brethren, the beings he trained with, fought with, cared deeply for, have perished.
Or so he believes.
When he intercepts a communication mentioning the existence of one of his kind, he has to investigate its source. The message could be a trap set by his enemies. He’ll take that risk if it secures him the companionship he requires to be fully functional.
What he finds is a daring brown-eyed female who activates all his systems. She proudly proclaims she’s a researcher, brandishing that information like a weapon before her. He wants to kiss the sass off her beautiful face, protect her from the dangers around them, claim her forever.
Quinn is on a quest to locate the mechanics of an early-version cyborg. She believes the information captured within that frame will give her valuable insights into the past.
When her mission goes zombie-like beings levels of wrong, she comes face-to-face with a living, breathing B Model. He has big hands, a primitive countenance, and stern hard lips crafted for kissing.
She doesn’t trust him. And she doesn’t have time to indulge her desires.
Their shared enemies are chasing them, would kill to get their precious specimens back. One minor mistake could reduce B and Quinn to a mere line in the databases of history.

AI And Romance Writing
There has been a lot of talk about AI lately. AI has advanced tremendously, which is exciting but also a bit scary. AI has been producing cover art.
And AI has been writing romance novels.
I’m not going to weigh in on other writers using AI to write first drafts. Just as I don’t weigh in about writers using ghostwriters (i.e. other writers) for first drafts.
Everyone has different paths and, if reading buddies are okay with the finished stories, who am I to judge?
I WILL say that I won’t ever use AI for first or any other types of drafts. (I likely already use AI and don’t know it when I look up research topics or read science papers.) I won’t ever use ghostwriters either.
Writing the stories is my favorite part of this wonderful career. I like crafting intricate tales, weaving in characters and events from previous stories. I love how the story always surprises me. I never truly know what will happen.
I’m WAY too selfish to ever give that up.
This WILL mean my release schedule won’t speed up significantly. Though I might go back to 4 core releases a year. Or I might not. (shrugs) I might stick with 3 core releases. I don’t know.
Slower releases are a drawback of purely human-written stories. But I, hopefully, (knock on wood) have years ahead of me and the stories will eventually get written.

Raw Desires And Raw’s Name
When the cyborgs were manufactured, they were assigned a model number – their model type followed by a string of digits. They gave themselves names.
Every name has significance for the cyborg. Grin is good humored and he tends to grin and bear bad situations…like being a warrior who isn’t interested in war. Strive is striving to be a better being and control his emotion system malfunction.
Raw feels…well…raw compared to his two best friends. He knows he’s a primitive being, a warrior who is only interested in war.
He hopes that will be enough to win over his human female.

Muse Food – The Smallest Details
I tend to write three drafts of a story before I submit it to my Awesome Editor.
During the first draft, I scramble to write down all the broad components, the action, the key dialogue, the huge shifts in the characters’ thinking. There is sh*t in the first draft I won’t need in the final draft. There is sh*t that is missing. But the core story is there.
In the second draft, I add the details, smooth out the transitions, infuse the story with emotion.
Because the emotion is in the details. That is what makes the story live and breathe. The details allow us to fully picture the scene, to immerse ourselves in the story.
I think of it like this photo taken in Martinique. The first draft, the core story, is the pathway. But the aspect that makes it live for us is the mosaic trim, the colors, those details.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – January 15th
This week, I happily started, in earnest, writing the first draft of Strive For Forever, the fourth story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing likely in June).
I LOVE this story thus far. I love Strive. Having a creative soul, he is definitely a different type of cyborg hero. But he still has the cyborg characteristics. He was trained to be a warrior, for example. He CAN fight. And he CAN protect his heroine if that is necessary (whispers – It WILL be necessary).
And his heroine? She is SO different from any other heroine I’ve written. This story is fun, fun, fun. (grins)

Grin And Bare Him
This cyborg will be the warrior his female requires.
Cyborgs are manufactured to fight.
