Boxing Day/Reading Day
Today is Boxing Day here in Canada. In the Before Times, it was a day for awesome sales and great shopping (the equivalent of Black Friday in the US). Stores were clearing out unsold holiday merchandise and it was a great day to pick up a bargain.
In my family, when I was young, Boxing Day was a reading day. Many of us received new or new-to-me or borrowed-from-the-library-as-a-surprise books. On Boxing Days in the past, we snuggled under blankets and read until our eyes ached. (grin)
Today, I plan to do the same thing…once we clear the snow (or exercise in the outdoor gym as the Dear Wonderful Hubby calls it). We’re on lockdown in our section of the universe and I have a stack of new-to-me romance novels calling my name.

Special Holiday Treats
The Dear Wonderful Hubby surprised me with a box of Nanaimo
Bars last night. Nanaimo Bars are one of my all time favorite treats. I usually
only indulge in them during the winter holidays.
Nanaimo BarsThe Dear Wonderful Hubby bought himself a strawberry cheesecake
this year from Costco (it is HUGE) and also bought me a chocolate cake. We’ve
been working on both of these all week. (It is just the two of us and we’re on
lockdown so getting through desserts can be a yummy challenge.)
My Awesome Mom sent me a box of cookies and other baking at
the beginning of the month. Some of my favorites in that care package were
raisin tarts and chocolate almond bark.

Readers Are Never Truly Alone
Many of us will be in lockdowns over the winter holidays. In my corner of the universe, we can’t meet with people from outside our households. We’re lucky to have two people in our household (the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are the humans in our home). Some households have only one person in them.
One physical person.
Readers like you and I have hundreds, perhaps thousands of
characters in our households. They formally sit on our shelves but they often also
reside in our heads.
When I was younger, I would read to a wonderful woman in a
long term care home. She had been blind for decades but was quickly losing her
hearing.
I asked her if she was scared. She would be cut off from
others, would be alone.
She smiled at me. “Readers are never alone, my love. We have thousands of friends living up in here.” She tapped her forehead. “I’ll simply be spending more time with them. We’ll have grand adventures and good long chats.”
I remember her words whenever I feel lonely. I’ll look over
my bookshelf (virtual and physical) and I’ll choose a dear friend to spend time
with. And I don’t feel alone anymore.
Many of us will also be online during the holidays. You can reach
out to me whenever you feel like chatting about books or space or other things.

Under Strain
A damaged cyborg warrior is hunted by a peace-loving human female.
Strain is severely malfunctioning. The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor of a horrific decision made by his cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans and when he attacks one placed under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes him to a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue. Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to capture, kiss, claim her.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she knows she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – December 20th
I am in the home stretch of the first draft of Under Strain,
the second Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in May, at the latest). Woot! I will
be completing Chapter 16 today and have Chapter 17 and Chapter 18 planned for
Monday and Tuesday.
This first draft is a hot mess. All of my first drafts are
disasters. But I already know I’ll love it. Strain and his female have such a
unique relationship and it works beautifully for them. I can’t wait for you to
read this story!
After I finish this first draft, I will likely take a break
writing-wise until mid-January. We’re still in lockdown in my section of the universe
so it will just be the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I over the holidays. I have SO
MANY books I want to read (my eldest brother alone has given me THIRTY new historical
romance novels for the holidays – yes, that’s outrageous) and there are movies
and TV shows I want to watch (I haven’t yet watched the season finale of The
Mandalorean. I hear it is a tearjerker.).

Love, Actually
Warning: This post will assume you have watched Love, Actually. If you haven’t watched it, you might wish to do that because I LOVE this movie (it is 17 years old and usually plays at least once on every TV Channel). But you also might wish to skip this post.
One of my favorite Christmas movies is Love, Actually, a movie that follows eight different lead characters as they search for love (of all kinds) over the holidays.
The happiest storyline in this movie for me is the one with newly
widowed Daniel (Liam Neeson) and his son Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster). The
storyline that most tore my heart out was, of course, the one with Karen (Emma
Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman). That dang gold necklace!
But the most frustrating storyline is the one with hard working Sarah (Laura Linney) and hottie Karl (Rodrigo Santoro). Their romance sizzles over days and nights working together. They hook up at the office holiday party but that encounter is thwarted by calls from Sarah’s will-likely-always-be-in-need-of-some-help brother.
I suspect the writers thought this was an illustration of sibling
love but it isn’t. It is an illustration of choosing safety and loneliness over
love and happiness.
Sarah is a classic romance heroine. She is avoiding romantic
love and possible hurt by doing other things. In her case, these other things
are working long hours and making her brother the center of her life.
When she finally ‘grows’ enough to take a chance on the holiday
party and on Karl, she receives a call from her brother and immediately retreats,
using that as an excuse to avoid romantic love.
Karl isn’t given the chance to be the hero.
Sarah is extremely cruel to him, telling her brother multiple times that she wasn’t doing anything important within Karl’s hearing. She turns her back to him. She communicates quite clearly in multiple ways she doesn’t care about his feelings.
Not being an a$$helmet, Karl backs off. In a romance, this is
when the heroine realizes she will lose her hero and her chance at romantic
love. The heroine will then pursue her hero.
But Sarah doesn’t do this. She acts like she doesn’t give a sh*t.
And Karl leaves.
This frustrates the heck out of me as a romance reader and writer…which is WHY I read and write romance.
Heroines in romance tend to…eventually…go after what and who they want. A Romance Heroine would have figured out a way to have romantic love AND support her brother.
There would be no choosing between romantic love and sibling love. She would have devised a means to enjoy both (and that would have made her brother’s life richer also).

A Gift For Yourself
This holiday season, when you’re choosing gifts or creating experiences
or making cookies (grins) for loved ones, treat yourself also.
It doesn’t have to be a big gift. A piece of decadent
chocolate might be the perfect indulgence. Or taking the time to read the next page
of an awesome romance novel. Or pausing for a moment to inhale the tantalizing
scent of the gingerbread cookies you just took out of the oven.
Give yourself something. It has been a challenging year. You
deserve indulgence and love.
As flight attendants would tell us in the Before Times, back
when we could travel safely, we should put on our own oxygen masks before helping
others. It is the same way with the holidays. We need to experience our own joy
before sharing it with our loved ones.
Take care of yourself this holiday season. (big hugs)
