Travels in Caricanus
During the last month, a change has taken place that I'm now ready to make official. The first four Facets stories are now considered prequels to my science fiction series. Millhaven Castle remains on its own. (The astronomy/genetic engineering theme really doesn't suit its mood.)
My readers are used to thinking of these stories as set in different worlds. They still are. They are now merely different planets within a sprawling galactic civiliziation rather than "imaginary countries." Jurant i...

Review: Red Rain by Aubrey Hansen

Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction
Rating: Pg-13 (for intensity, action violence)
Available as a paperback, ebook, or free audiobook
Most science fiction is incoherently written and uncreative, with bad dialogue. It is rare to find a work that taps the genre's potential. At 35,000 words, Red Rain packs a lot of excitement for its length. The general audience is teenagers, but the story will hold interest for adults as well.
A teenage girl named Phil...

Picture Book Spotlight: Rocket Boy 6 Pack by Joy Findlay

Genre: Children's Picture Book
Rating: G
Currently only available on the Kindle
This pack of six tiny books is both educational and fun. It comes only in ebook form (the idea being that kids will learn to be comfortable with technology from a very early age) and is astronomy-based. Children learn numbers, alphabet, colors, and other basic concepts, using breathtakingly beautiful NASA pictures.
When I opened this book, I was stunned by the lovely images, and thoroughly enjoyed turning pages even...

Should Books Have Movie Ratings?
I first thought about this after reading a really bad book. The content had not been at all what I expected, and if I had known how disturbing the book was, I would not have tried it. I wished that this book (and others out there) had had some sort of rating, like those used for movies and television programs: G, PG, PG-13, etc. Then I would have had more of an idea what I was getting into.
