LOTS AND LOTS OF STATIC
HAVE you heard? After the international debut of “Static” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15420946/), post-production kicked into overdrive, and we’re expecting the movie to come out soon in DVD and quite possibly Blu-Ray formats. This dramatic K. Simmons Production movie is about Will Gardner (played by Daniel S. Janik aka, yes, Raymond Gaynor), a curmongeous old veteran who’s seen and conquered everything life has thrown at him — until now. This time he faces Alzheimer’s disease, a battle he quickly realizes he can’t win. And yet…in the process he discovers a way to deal with this final challenge in the form of an old Philco radio that plays only static (https://kspllc.media/the-static-movie).

ORCHID ENVY
JUST as COVID-19 set in, I had the good fortune to visit a nearby orchid farm and bring home six different orchids to care for and cultivate. I’m pleased to announce that, now more than a year and a half later, my orchid-friends remain health and supportive as they were throughout the worst (so far) of the pandemic. What’s more, they seemed to thrive in the quieter, less auto-exhausted air bathing them. Call me crazy if you like, but these plants seemed more than happy to experience five million humans disappear and the usually frenetic world of business temporarily return to days of yore. Okay, so they may not be directly related. Or they may. Who knows, really?
But what I’m envious of is not only their abject joy during a time of woe, but their ability to instill that sense of joie de vivre in moi, during a time when impulsivity, violence, homicides, wars and suicides seemed to run rampant. The question now, is what happens next? Will yet another COVID-19 variant sweep the world, yet again challenging us to let of of the “old days” of crowd-based sales for a “new age” of individual service? Will the world attempt to “catch up” to where it “should” have been if the pandemic had never materialized? Or will everything simply continue to evolve in an ever sweeping kind of human-induced chaos I call “dis-integration?” I’ve no idea, but my several orchids seemed to perk up their leaves as I read this missive to myself out loud to check for errors (yes, as a professional actor and author, I’m always cognizant of the importance of the “Three C’s,” namely clarity, completeness and conciseness (as well as grammatical and syntactical correctness, the elusive 4th C, that like the neutrino seems to pervade everything but with little to no effect these days of self-publishing).

DIGGING DEEPER OR WATCHING THE RISE
HISTORY (“his” “story”) is a strange animal. First, it’s the victors who generally write it. Second, it’s almost always steeped in the hopes and expectations of the dominant culture. Third, it’s not scientific (i.e. not repeatable in the technical sense since it involves group activities based on contemporary norms). Fourth, it’s not academic, fiction and non-fiction often being published interchangeably (think of the “novel” here — typically an historically-based work with at least some fictional characters). Finally, it’s always subject to archeological “evidence,” which is, in and of itself subject to massive change as science plays catch up in this important field of study. It’s also subject to propaganda, a point increasingly apparent in the Trump and post-Trump presidency world.
But it’s the archeological (here interpreted as things buried beneath or in old layers as they rise) that provides the best verification for “his-story” (or “herstory” for that matter). The amazing thing about all this is that so much is/was simply buried beneath our feet, be it the Tar Pits of La Brea, the Greco-Roman cities of antiquity or the pyramids and mounds of the Native Americans. It’s right there beneath our feet, if we choose to look, which, sadly, we often don’t. Not everything archeological is supportive of our contemporary culture, mores, beliefs or military-politico-business desires. What’s left is for authors and actors to bring to life. Not history or herstory, but new possibilities, that hopefully will encourage us to “dig deeper under our feet” or “observe the rising mountainsides more closely.” I proposed to take that one step further in the Amazon genre bestseller, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor. It’s not possibilities in novels, but probabilities, the latter of particular power whether looking to the past or the future (and through the future, always the past). A DAY OF THE NOT-SO-DEAD
Día de los Muertos, according to National Geographic, celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. That includes, I assume, reading, yeah? But it’s also celebrated by some with bonfires, guising or mumming, divination and feasting as Samhain, a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or “darker-half” of the year beginning on the evening of 31 October, since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset.

IT’S A PARTY! OR IS IT?
RECENTLY, I’ve been surprised and impressed with the creeping of today’s “dis-integration” movement into the very heart of US politics, namely the appearance of Republican Democrats blocking the presidential agenda to get the nation back “on-track” and the Democratic Republicans, of which there are surprisingly mostly “in the closet” in fear of Trump. It might seem like this is the first step to healing the chasm between Democrats and Republicans, but I’m sincerely doubting so. It’s more like these chimeras are working inside each party for it’s own destruction. I’m calling this new phenomenon “implosition,” which seems to fit the evidence the best. It’s as if there were a total assault on the democratic process brewing from the very “middle class” people who benefit most from the system. I say this with full realization that being in the “rich” class — meaning in the powerful monied class — is an exercise in illusion, money and power being mostly illusory games that the “upper” class play both to preserve their illusory power and wealth, and to maintain the class structure with them “on top.” The “problem” with this way of thinking is that we all depend not on money or power, but on the plants of this earth, which depending on the planet remaining “alive.” Is it all a party, or isn’t it?

WHAT DO ACTORS DO BETWEEN FILMS?
THE obvious answer is read scripts sent by one’s agent to ascertain what role will be next. My own less obvious answer is return to authoring. Having finished the second book THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859), the sequel to TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1434403556), I’ve been turning my creative juices towards finishing “Prophecy,” the prospective third book in this series that ties together much of the action in the previous two works. “Prophecy” is indeed about prophecy. So far the “outlandish” prophecies in TOTAL MELTDOWN and THE EDGE OF MADNESS have proven largely fulfilled. “Prophecy” will take them on and take off into the increasingly complex technological world created by its two prequels. Hint: The question as to whether humans will ever be able to actually move from one universe to another without dying will be taken on and take off in “Prophecy.” All with total plausibility.
And as for what’s next for actor Daniel S. Janik, I’m currently contemplating an appearance in the K. Simmons Productions of both “The William Maltese Collection” and “Finding Kate.” Having known the incomparable William Maltese for a number of years, and having co-written TOTAL MELTDOWN with him, I’d be honored to say a few words in the upcoming bio-documentary, should the opportunity arise. As for “Finding Kate,” having co-written QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) with the equally incomparable A. G. Hayes (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0996325530), I am at the moment considering playing either Kate Keenan’s nemesis, the very noir corporate manipulator Hank Tolomeo, or Kate Keenan’s devoted father, Ethan Keenan. Either would, I think, allow me to enjoy immersing into the special agent world of A. G. Hayes. Check this blog regularly to find out what finally happens.

Simmons Productions has purchased the manga, animation and movie rights to THE EDGE OF MADNESS, leaving me to wonder if, when “Prophecy” is finished and published, whether the three books will stand alone on the silver screen, or perhaps be combined into one amazing screenplay and extended length movie. Personally, either one would be fine by me. In the meantime, it’s back to fingers on keyboard to finish “Prophecy” before my next movie appearance. Can’t wait to see me in the movies? COLLECTING THE WILLIAM MALTESE COLLECTION
MANY know Daniel S. Janik (aka author Raymond Gaynor/Gary Martine) as an author and actor, but few know my acting/dancing partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya and I as Executive Producers, but we are. It all started in 2007 with “Clean Water, Common Ground” (1999) which won two Telly awards — https://www.tellyawards.com/?s=Clean+... best documentary — for nature/wildlife and documentary. Initially picked up by the National Film Network and more recently by Savant Media, it is available from all four Savant Bookstores (https://www.savantbooksandpublication...). In Clean Water Common Ground, native Hawaiians, local residents, and commercial land developers, as well as university, federal, state and local officials, examine the damaging effects taking place on the local environment. They examine the impact of land misuse and offer measures that are needed to stem the tide of environmental degradation. They also discuss ways in which the public, including children, can be made aware of this ever-growing concern.
Setsuko and I are currently Executive Producers of the K. Simmons Production of “The William Maltese Collection,” a bio-documentary of the incomparable author and king of erotica, William Maltese (https://kspllc.media/maltese-collection), a reprise to Maltese’s many inspirations, achievements, and his lifelong support of erotica, LGBTQ authors and readers. Pioneering author, artist, model, explorer, escort, military man, businessman, clothing designer, and worldwide celebrity William Maltese is a Pacific Northwesterner whose authorial career spans four decades. From men’s pulp magazines to Harlequin Romances to children’s book to erotic man-love and, yes, to gourmet cookbooks, Maltese has penned more than 200 fiction and non-fiction books.
