Spiritual Gifts, 29
~ The Spiritual Gift of Music ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Category ~ We are still in the broad classification of grace gifts which I think of as the medical community. I think of the gift of music used for God as Spiritual Psychologists.
Since it is audible this gift is classified under the Speaking Gifts.
Definition ~ The duties of music ministers roughly correspond to those of the Old Testament Levites. Consider this, while Preachers admonish people about what is important; Teachers educate them as to what is important; and Musicians merely do what is important without explaining it. Some tend to label Christian music as entertainment rather than worship. In doing this, they denigrate God's intention for music ministry.
Scripture ~ “Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: praise Him with the psaltery and harp. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: praise Him with stringed instruments and organs” (Psalm 150:3-4).
Interesting Facts ~ Scripture mentions music far more than preaching as an element of worship. Even Paul’s statement in Romans that faith comes by hearing the Word of God pertained primarily to the musical presentation of Scripture in ancient Jewish worship. To this day the Scriptures are chanted in the synagogue, and the music leader is called a “cantor.”
Biblical Examples ~ (1) The memorializing of events such as we find in Exodus 15:1-18, 21 which commemorates Israel's victory over Egypt. The chorus in verse 21 is a thematic summary of the event. A choir of women performed, singing and dancing with timbrels as they were led by that spry old lady Miriam. From that chorus comes our modern praise song: ‘I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously, the horse and rider thrown into the sea...’ It certainly demonstrates the timelessness of music as a form of worship.
(2) Music as a teacher: Temple songs were used to impress certain facts upon the memory. Through the centuries music has continued as a teaching device.
Quotes ~ “Schubert's String Quartet in A Minor is the only proof I need for the existence of God.” —H.L. Mencken
“God’s call for the music minister {in the broad sense} of the church is to inspire His people to holy worship until the day we all gather in the heavenly throne room and sing His praises forever.” —Moishe Rosen
Testimony ~ In the spring of 1960 a young freshmen student at the University of Washington heard “Amazing Grace” on a Christian radio station. Being a top math student the last verse began to haunt him as undeniably true -- if there really is an eternity. “When we've been there ten thousand years, with no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun.” He knew that if the Bible was true then 10,000 years of torture in hell would not have shortened his punishment. This song was a key item which the Holy Spirit of God used in my conversion. That student was me! Music had a significant part in my conversion.
Closing Comments ~ “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 102
~ Regarding Reasoning, 2of5 ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, ‘Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? They said to Him, ‘Twelve.’ Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?And they said, ‘Seven.’ So He said to them, ‘How is it you do not understand?” (Mark 8:17-21).

God Is My… (Psalms), 69
~ God Is My Healer, 2 ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psalm 103:1-5).
Other Passage ~ “I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up, and have not let my foes rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. O Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave; You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit” (Psalm 30:1-3).

Myth, 107
~ I Can Consider Eternity Later ~
Myth ~ One of Satan’s biggest lies is that we can put off a decision regarding salvation through Jesus Christ to a later date. Reality ~ The day you were born you were terminal. The big question is how many years, months, weeks, days will you spend on earth. Only God knows! Your life could easily end before the end of today. Scripture ~ “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:13-14). “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Quote ~ “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” (missionary martyr Jim Elliot)~ Robert Lloyd Russell, ABUNDANT LIFE NOW blog.

Invisible God, 4of11
~ No Man Has Ever Seen God ~
Introductory Quote ~ “In the early days of space exploration one of the Russian cosmonauts returned from space and matter-of-factly stated that he hadn’t seen God! The essence of his comment was, ‘I’ve been there, done that, I didn’t see God — therefore there is no God.’
“Because God was not seen by Russian cosmonauts or our own astronauts, does that mean that God does not exist? Does it mean that He is absent from outer space? Or, is He present but invisible?
“We know that it is dark, very dark, in outer space. We also are aware that outer space is full of light traveling from stars in all directions. Only a tiny fraction of this light travels in a direction that causes it to reach our planet earth. Space travelers do not see the light that is so abundant in space.
“The Scriptures tell us that the God who is light dwells in darkness!” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight” by Robert Lloyd Russell).
Scripture ~ “John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said, “He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.”’ And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (John 1:15-18).
Closing Quote ~ “As we return to Einstein’s theory of relativity, we find that as an object reaches the speed of light, dimensions in the direction of travel become zero. This means that objects traveling at the speed of light become invisible, no matter how large they are at slower speeds. Light defies our normal constraints of spatial dimensions.
“Although light is invisible, it is capable of manifesting itself. We can detect the presence of light as it reveals our surroundings, and we discern the effects of light such as feeling its warmth on our skin. It is as if we can see the unseen.
“We can utilize the effects of light in many ways. In our era with the use of lasers mankind has harnessed the power of light to perform many wonderful tasks — from supermarket checkout procedures to critical medical operations.
“In a similar manner we do not see God, but we see the manifestations of God. The effects of the invisible God are clearly seen. His presence can be known.
“The key to understanding either physical or spiritual light is found in observing what it can do. Although no one has ever seen physical light, mankind has learned a great deal about its characteristics; we have applied our knowledge in useful ways.” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight” by Robert Lloyd Russell).

4 Writings
~ Four Very Special Communications From God To Man ~
FOUR HANDWRITINGS
On Tables Of Stone(Law) ~ “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain’” (Exodus 34:1-2).
the basics: Sinners are lacking in God’s eyes.
On The Plaster Of The Wall (judgment) ~ “In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote” (Daniel 5:5).
the basics: Sinners will be judged by God using His standards.
On The Cross(atonement) ~ “And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: ‘THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS’” (Matthew 27:37).
the basics: The Messiah—the Savior—is making provision for the forgiveness of sin.
On The Heart(grace) ~ (1) “You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart” (2 Corinthians 3:2-3).
the basics: Gentiles from all nations are being restored to God—a result of the Cross.
(2) “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (Hebrews 8:10).
the basics: Israel will be restored to God—a result of the Cross.

God Our Rock, 24
~ My Rock of Refuge, 2 ~
Introduction ~ In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand. This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life. Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).
Scripture ~ “Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul would soon have settled in silence. If I say, ‘My foot slips,’ Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up. In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.
“Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with You? They gather together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood. But the Lord has been my defense, and my God the rock of my refuge. He has brought on them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; the Lord our God shall cut them off” (Psalm 94:17-23).

Spiritual Gifts, 28
~ The Spiritual Gift of Exhortation ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Category ~ We are still in the broad classification of grace gifts which I think of as the medical community. The Gift of Exhortation could be considered the spiritual Cardiologist.
Definition ~ This can also be called the gift of encouraging. It is the God-given ability to draw alongside someone to comfort, to encourage, to rebuke, or to provide spiritual insight which leads to positive action. Various commentators have used different terminology regarding this gift. John Phillips relates this gift closely to the “intention of truth” and points out that it is “addressed to the conscience and the heart.”
The work of the exhorter is to stir up the consciences of God's people so that truth does not become merely abstract theology but is worked out in practical, down-to-earth living.
“In many European homes, rooms are heated by small open fireplaces. Standard equipment with such a fireplace is a poker, a piece of metal used from time to time to stir up the smoldering embers so that they burst back into flame. This is the work of the exhorter. He must stir up the consciences of God's people so that truth does not become merely abstract theology but is worked out in practical, down-to-earth living.” —John Phillips
'Exhortation' is the Greek word 'paraklesis' literally 'a calling near' or 'a calling for.' In other words the underlying purpose of exhortation or encouragement is to comfort.
Scripture ~ “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness” (Romans 12:6-8).
Biblical Examples ~ Joseph (Barnabas) – “Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement)” (Acts 4:36). He was such an encourager that he earned a nickname from the Apostles.
Traits ~ An encourager understands the feelings and attitudes of other people.
An encourager feels deep concern for people who are going through difficulties.
An encourager likes to talk with people either in a group or individually.
An encourager seeks Biblical principles as a guide for daily activities.
An encourager tells people what changes need to be made in their lives without offending them.
An encourager stays with people and encourages them to achieve a task once they have started it.
An encourager enjoys talking with people, sometimes neglects own responsibilities to get too involved.
An encourager tailors a program of action to assist people with their difficulties.
An encourager refuses to be discouraged by difficulties since they are opportunities for personal growth.

Question – Jesus, 101
~ Regarding Reasoning, 1of5 ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, ‘What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?’They said to Him, ‘The Son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How then does David in the Spirit call Him “Lord,” saying: The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool? If David then calls Him “Lord,” how is He his Son?’ And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore” (Matthew 22:41-46).

God Is My… (Psalms), 68
~ God Is My Provider, 3 ~
Other Passages ~ “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:5-6).
“Therefore the Lord heard this and was furious; so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel, because they did not believe in God, and did not trust in His salvation. Yet He had commanded the clouds above, and opened the doors of heaven, had rained down manna on them to eat, and given them of the bread of heaven. Men ate angels' food; He sent them food to the full.
“He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; and by His power He brought in the south wind. He also rained meat on them like the dust, feathered fowl like the sand of the seas; and He let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. So they ate and were well filled, for He gave them their own desire. They were not deprived of their craving” (Psalm 78:21-30a).
