Question – Jesus, 104
~ Regarding Reasoning, 4of5 ~
Introduction ~ This series is about questions involving Jesus. Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth. Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others. We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus.
“When He saw their faith, He said to him, ‘Man, your sins are forgiven you.’ And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, ‘Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’
“But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, ‘Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven you,” or to say, “Rise up and walk?” But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins’ — He said to the man who was paralyzed, ‘I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.’
“Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, ‘We have seen strange things today!’” (Luke 5:17-26).

Myth, 110
~ Evangelism Is Something I Do ~
Myth ~ Evangelism is something that I do myself. God expects me to save souls. Reality ~ First we must recognize that according to Scripture evangelism is a spiritual gift. Second, Scripture tells us that all Christians should be a witness for Christ. A witness is only responsible for telling what they know first-hand. A good witness does not need in-depth theology. It is interesting that many people have no trouble witnessing to their co-workers the morning after attending a great sports or music event. Finally, the saving of souls is God’s responsibility – our responsibility is to be obedient to Scripture and the Holy Spirit’s direction in our lives. We are God’s people. But evangelism is God’s work of which if we are obedient we may play a part. Scripture ~ The New Testament contains a total of three references to evangelism. Good hermeneutic (Biblical interpretation) principles need to be used rather than accepting what has often been taught. Look at the three references and what they clearly tell us.
Evangelism ~ The first reference to an evangelist in the Word of God is in Acts 21:8, where we read: “Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven.” Notice the clear use of the word as a title, similar to the way in which one today might say “Billy Graham the evangelist.” Incidentally, Philip—the evangelist is to be distinguished from Philip—the apostle.
The second reference is in Ephesians 4:11, dealing with spiritual gifts in the church: “It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.” The context clearly speaks for itself.
The third time the word evangelist is used in the Word of God is in 2 Timothy 4:5, where we read Paul's charge to Timothy: “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” Here we see the term used as a specific instruction to a specific individual. “Do the work of an evangelist” again connotes a specific type of calling. How Christians exercise the gift of evangelism may vary. Some may conduct mass crusades while others are skilled in one-to-one evangelistic efforts.
The word “evangelist” appears in Scripture in only three locations. It seems clear from these references that not all Christians are called to be evangelists and therefore are not necessarily commanded to do the work of an evangelist (or to feel guilty about not doing so). Witness ~ “You [all Christians] will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you [all Christians]; and you [all Christians] will be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8). All Christians are His witnesses whether they intend to be or not! In other words, you cannot change God’s character—but you can sure damage His reputation!
Throughout the Bible all saints are repeatedly exhorted to be witnesses, and by implication all are exhorted to speak forth. But as we have seen, there is a difference between witnessing and evangelizing. There are many places in Scripture where witnessing is a clear command to all Christians

Invisible God, 7of11
~ Jesus Christ Is The Image Of The Invisible God ~
Introductory Quote ~ “In the early days of space exploration one of the Russian cosmonauts returned from space and matter-of-factly stated that he hadn’t seen God! The essence of his comment was, ‘I’ve been there, done that, I didn’t see God — therefore there is no God.’
“Because God was not seen by Russian cosmonauts or our own astronauts, does that mean that God does not exist? Does it mean that He is absent from outer space? Or, is He present but invisible?
“We know that it is dark, very dark, in outer space. We also are aware that outer space is full of light traveling from stars in all directions. Only a tiny fraction of this light travels in a direction that causes it to reach our planet earth. Space travelers do not see the light that is so abundant in space.
“The Scriptures tell us that the God who is light dwells in darkness!” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight” by Robert Lloyd Russell).
Scripture ~ “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:9-18).
Closing Quote ~ “As we return to Einstein’s theory of relativity, we find that as an object reaches the speed of light, dimensions in the direction of travel become zero. This means that objects traveling at the speed of light become invisible, no matter how large they are at slower speeds. Light defies our normal constraints of spatial dimensions.
“Although light is invisible, it is capable of manifesting itself. We can detect the presence of light as it reveals our surroundings, and we discern the effects of light such as feeling its warmth on our skin. It is as if we can see the unseen.
“We can utilize the effects of light in many ways. In our era with the use of lasers mankind has harnessed the power of light to perform many wonderful tasks — from supermarket checkout procedures to critical medical operations.
“In a similar manner we do not see God, but we see the manifestations of God. The effects of the invisible God are clearly seen. His presence can be known.
“The key to understanding either physical or spiritual light is found in observing what it can do. Although no one has ever seen physical light, mankind has learned a great deal about its characteristics; we have applied our knowledge in useful ways.” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight” by Robert Lloyd Russell).

Divine Openings
~ Luke Reports 5 Christ-Related Openings ~
Opened Heart(to receive Christ) ~ “And on the Sabbath day we [Paul, Silas, and Timothy) went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.’ So she persuaded us” (Acts 16:13-15).
Opened Eyes(to see Christ) ~ “Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight” (Luke 24:30-31).
Opened Scriptures(to reveal Christ) ~ The previous paragraph continues: “Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:30-32).
Opened Understanding (to learn Christ) ~ “Then He [Jesus Christ] said to them, ‘These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.’ And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures” (Luke 24:44-45).
Opened Heavens(to see the victorious Christ) ~ “When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. But he [Stephen], being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, ‘Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’” (Acts 7:54-56).

God Our Rock, 27
~ God is The Only Rock, 2 ~
Introduction ~ In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand. This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life. Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).
Scripture ~ “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, let them show these to them.
“Do not fear, nor be afraid; have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one’” (Isaiah 44:6-8).

Spiritual Gifts, 30
~ The Spiritual Gift of Music – Great Composers ~
Opening Comment ~ “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Quotes ~ (1) The following quote is from: “THE GIFT OF MUSIC: Great Composers and Their influences” by Jane Stuart Smith, Betty Carlson Crossway Books.
Johann Sebastian Bach: The outstanding member of the greatest musical family the world has ever known. The Bach ancestors left Hungary rather than give up their Biblical faith. The focus of Bach's spiritual life was in Christianity and in the service of religion through music. Bach's Christian faith and his music are inseparably united. His belief in the reality of heaven caused his music to be timeless.
On the title page of his copy of “Little Book for the Organ” Bach wrote, “To the glory of God alone in the highest and to further the learning of everyone.”
He believed that the primary reason for music should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the mind. Many critics consider Bach the greatest of all composers. In him we have the supreme uniting of a person's faith and his talent.
Bach, in a sense, placed himself “in the pulpit” to expound the gospel, and his cantatas reflect the depth of Christianity. Bach wrote his music as an act of worship in the true mystical sense, and his faith and music are unified.
Often Bach wrote on manuscripts, “With the help of Jesus,” or “To God alone be the glory,” acknowledging that his gift of music was from God.
Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the spiritually wisest musicians the world has known. Art comes from the being made in the image of God, and we know. God is for the arts and has relegated to men and women wonderful gifts of creativity. Often these gifts have not been used for God's glory...
“God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 6:17b).
Most critics agree that Bach is the greatest composer of all time. Many of the greatest composers have acknowledged their indebtedness to Bach.
(2) Jewish conductor Felix Mendelssohn became a Christian shortly after his second performance of “The Passion According to Saint Matthew” by J.S. Bach. That same piece led Nancy Ginstling to think about Jesus for the first time. She ultimately became a Christian, and wrote the book “The Jewish Case for Jesus.”
(3) “I feel strongly that all the arts, and particularly music, should be placed in the service of Him who has created and given them.” —Martin Luther
Note ~ As individuals turn further and further from the personal, infinite God, the Giver of gifts, the more dehumanized and twisted will be that which he or she creates. May the great gift of music be used for the glory of God.
Closing Comments ~ “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 103
~ Regarding Reasoning, 3of5 ~

We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts). Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture ~ “There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’
“Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be born again.” The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
“Nicodemus answered and said to Him, ‘How can these things be?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:1-17).

God Is My… (Psalms), 71
~ God Is My Redeemer, 3 ~
Introduction ~ Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms. While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage ~ “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy, and gathered out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south” (Psalm 107:1-3).
Other Passages ~ “For You are my rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalm 31:3-5).
“Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psalm 103:1-5).

Myth, 109
~ Become A Christian and Your Life Will Be Easy ~
Myth ~ There are “Health and Wealth” preachers whose message is largely that of personal gain and a comfortable lifestyle for those who believe. Reality ~ This is a far cry from what the Scripture teaches. Scripture ~ “Sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45b). Jesus put it this way, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Quotes ~ “Those who say, ‘If you become a Christian your troubles will be over,’ have no clue what a Christian is – for that’s when the war really begins.” (Burk Parsons)
