Myth, 106

 ~ Just Be Yourself ~

Myth  ~  Many times people are encouraged to “just be themselves.” Reality  ~  All humans are sinful and wicked.  “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Scripture  ~  “As it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.  They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.  Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes’” (Romans 3:10-18). The Truth  ~  Rather than to be ourselves we are to be like Christ.  We are to continuously seek to become increasingly like Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). It starts with our thinking and our minds. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him” (Philippians 2:5-9a). “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Romans 8:29-30).

Invisible God, 3of11

~ God Surrounds Men But Is Unseen ~

Introductory Quote  ~  “In the early days of space exploration one of the Russian cosmonauts returned from space and matter-of-factly stated that he hadn’t seen God! The essence of his comment was, ‘I’ve been there, done that, I didn’t see God — therefore there is no God.’

“Because God was not seen by Russian cosmonauts or our own astronauts, does that mean that God does not exist?  Does it mean that He is absent from outer space?  Or, is He present but invisible?

“We know that it is dark, very dark, in outer space.  We also are aware that outer space is full of light traveling from stars in all directions.  Only a tiny fraction of this light travels in a direction that causes it to reach our planet earth.  Space travelers do not see the light that is so abundant in space.

“The Scriptures tell us that the God who is light dwells in darkness!” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight”  by Robert Lloyd Russell).

Scripture  ~  “Look, I go forward, but He is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive Him; when He works on the left hand, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the right hand, I cannot see Him.  But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.  My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside.  I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:8-12).

Closing Quote  ~  “As we return to Einstein’s theory of relativity, we find that as an object reaches the speed of light, dimensions in the direction of travel become zero.  This means that objects traveling at the speed of light become invisible, no matter how large they are at slower speeds.  Light defies our normal constraints of spatial dimensions.

“Although light is invisible, it is capable of manifesting itself.  We can detect the presence of light as it reveals our surroundings, and we discern the effects of light such as feeling its warmth on our skin.  It is as if we can see the unseen.

“We can utilize the effects of light in many ways.  In our era with the use of lasers mankind has harnessed the power of light to perform many wonderful tasks — from supermarket checkout procedures to critical medical operations.

“In a similar manner we do not see God, but we see the manifestations of God.  The effects of the invisible God are clearly seen.  His presence can be known.

“The key to understanding either physical or spiritual light is found in observing what it can do.  Although no one has ever seen physical light, mankind has learned a great deal about its characteristics; we have applied our knowledge in useful ways.” (from the book: “GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight”  by Robert Lloyd Russell).

4 Women

~ Four Women in the Book of Revelation ~

Jezebel(Thyatira—the church in the dark ages)  ~  We read our Lord’s words concerning the corrupt church:  “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:  I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.  Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.  And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.  Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.  I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.  And I will give to each one of you according to your works.  Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.  But hold fast what you have till I come.  And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations — “He shall rule them with a rod of iron; they shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels” — as I also have received from My Father; and I will give him the morning star” (Revelation 2:18-28).  The church is feminine—Christ’s bride.  Thyatira was the Roman church during the dark ages.

The Woman(Israel)  ~  We read about a woman, a child, and a dragon:  “Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars.  Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth.  And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.  His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.  And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.  She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron.  And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.  Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days” (Revelation 12:1-6).

Babylon (the apostate church of the Great Tribulation)  ~  We read about the Scarlet Woman and the Scarlet Beast:  “Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.’  So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness.  And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.  The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.  And on her forehead a name was written:  MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.  I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.  And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement” (Revelation 17:1-6).

The Bride (the true Church)  ~  We read concerning the New Jerusalem:  “And He said to me, ‘Itis done!  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.  He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.  But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.’  Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.’  And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.  Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west” (Revelation 21:6-13, cf. 48:30-35).  This is all about the true Church of Jesus Christ in the post-millennial city—her eternal home.

God Our Rock, 23

 ~ God Is My Rock, 4 ~

Introduction  ~  In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:47-49 Jesus relates the importance of building your house upon rock rather than sand.  This principle is even more critical when it comes to our spiritual life.  Each post in this series looks at a different Biblical passage which refers to our God as a Rock (not a complete list).

Scripture  ~  “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.  Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.  They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him” (Psalm 92:12-15).

Comment  ~  An eBook which ties in nicely with this Scripture is “GOD’S CHILD: Like A Tree” which has been described as “The definitive work on Psalm One” by a prominent Dallas Seminary Professor.

Spiritual Gifts, 27

~ The Spiritual Gift of Preaching ~

Opening Comment  ~  “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures” (James 1:16-18).

Category  ~  We are still in the broad classification of grace gifts which I think of as the medical community.  The Gift of Preaching could be considered the spiritual Physical Therapist.

Preaching is mentioned many times in Scripture and there are many gifted preachers.  It is interesting to note that the gift of preaching is not mentioned in Scripture specifically as a gift.  Clearly it was in the days of the early church and remains so today.  There is no question that preaching can be a spiritual gift.  I good friend of mine and spiritual mentor once told me, “Bob, I am not a good speaker, but I am a gifted preacher.”  I knew him well and that was a true statement.

Definition  ~  Primarily "preaching" is a technique, a methodology, a delivery vehicle for exercising Biblical gifts such as: Teaching, Exhortation, and Evangelism.  As in the use/misuse of all grace gifts it is possible for a preacher to be exercising, in a fleshly way, natural abilities such as skill in oratory.

Biblical Examples  ~  Jesus Christ (i.e., the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7), the Apostles Paul (i.e. Mars Hill, Acts 17:22-31) and Peter (Acts 2:14-42), and others.

Traits  ~  While not an exhaustive list, here are some characteristics to consider:

Accepts the Bible for what it says without doubt.

Persists even when inwardly discouraged, and works harder to achieve results.

Speak clearly, organize and present material so that others understand.

Encourage people to continue in Christian growth by taking the next step.

Like decisions to be made, once people have heard the truth.

Enjoy addressing a large group, feel uncomfortable sometimes in one-to-one settings.

Tells people when they are doing wrong, and encourages them to build a disciplined life.

Find the foundational truths of Scripture to be worth repeating over and over.

Challenges people to set high standards of Biblical conduct for their daily activities.

Plan appealing presentations to get people to respond with positive changes in behavior.

Closing Comments  ~  “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.  Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.  Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.  Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6-7).

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

Question – Jesus, 100

 ~ Regarding Quantity ~

Introduction ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.

Scripture  ~  “‘When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?’  They said to Him, ‘Twelve.’  ‘Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?’  And they said, ‘Seven’” (Mark 8:19-20).

Comments  ~  As is the case of all of Christ’s questions to others He knew the answer but wisely asked questions to get His point across.

God Is My… (Psalms), 67

 ~ God Is My Shepherd, 3  ~

Introduction  ~  Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms.  While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.

Passage  ~  “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!  Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.  Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

“For the Lord is the great God, and the great King above all gods.  In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also.  The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.  For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand” (Psalm 95:1-7).

Other Passages  ~  “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!  Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up Your strength, and come and save us” (Psalm 80:1-2).

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake” (Psalm 23:1-3).

Myth, 105

~ Man Is Irrelevant In The Big Picture ~

Myth  ~  In this great universe of billions of galaxies man is just a tiny irrelevant part of the big picture.  Mankind evolved from apes which have evolved from a Big Bang or other unverifiable source.  Reality  ~  Man was created in the image of God and man’s purpose is to worship his Creator.  Scripture  ~  “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth’” (Genesis 1:27-28).  “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.  And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it” (Genesis 9:6-7).  “You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. Ps 139:13-14 Comment  ~  I do not fully understand what being created in the image of God means.  One thing is clear to me.  God is the creator and He endowed man with a creativity not seen in other forms of life on earth.  Man creates, automobiles, aircraft, massive cities, and amazing electronics.  Other forms of life may create intricate structures, such as the honeycombs of bees, but their technology does not change over centuries.

Invisible God, 2of11

~ Man Cannot See God ~

2 Gives 2

 ~ 2 Spiritual Disciplines with 2 Results ~

Be In The Word of God  ~  “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious” (1 Peter 4:7a). To be serious about your Christian faith requires spending regular time in the Word of God—a critical spiritual discipline for a healthy spiritual life which results in a clear mind and self-control.

Be In Prayer ~  “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers” (1 Peter 4:7).  Prayer is another critical with regards to all of life on earth and for a healthy spiritual life which is a responsibility, duty, and ministry that all Christians are called to.

Result One  ~  “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.’  Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.  As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:8-10).  To love others deeply is a practical result which comes from the two previous spiritual disciplines.

Result Two  ~  “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.’  Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.  As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:8-10).  The result of the previous paragraphs is stated clearly.
