Epic Journal – 30th March 2014

30th March 2014

So the base hotel has changed. This really isn’t as big a deal as it sounds, especially as I’ve yet to plan hotels and hire cars. That needs to be done this week although I am considering moving around the state as geocaching dictates.

It now feels very real and very close and I still have so much to do. In less than a month I’ll be chasing, in less than three weeks I’ll be caching.

Reading up about the new hotel it sounds pretty lush – a gated apartment complex with facilities....

Epic Journal – 29th March 2014

29th March 2014

Today was a photography day. With any luck I announced my trip via an awesome video explaining what I was doing. I hope I have because I spent a lot of time on it today.

I was using my Canon to film as the bracket for my GoPro hasn’t arrived yet. It gave me chance to really play around with the camera and try out a few things.

I did about 9 different takes, a lot because I wasn’t sure whether the camera was recording or not. If nothing else, I at least know how to do that.

I now n...

Day 1 – I’m Still Alive

I am in Birmingham, Alabama.

After setting out from Norman, Oklahoma at 5am we headed east, passing through the damage path of the previous night’s Mayflower tornado. Shortly after that the other van had an accident.

Everyone was fine but we had to organise a rental for them and lost a lot of time. It also meant in-flight wifi ability was reduced, so expect less updates from the road. As a result. By the time we were South of Memphis chasing the line of storms forming in Mississippi, we were be...

Epic Journal – 28th March 2014

28th March 2014

So last night Tornado season really seemed to kick off.

There were some Tornado warned storms in Missouri and so as I was busy setting up the Mac to handle my geocaching for the trip, it was a perfect time to set up another piece of software called Radarscope

Radarscope is basically a weather radar programme that relays the sort of radar images you see on US news networks to my PC. It’ll be handy as it’ll give me notifications of severe weather warnings and tornado watches.

So I w...

Epic Journal – 27th March 2014

27th March 2014

So today I started building my Geocaching PQs for the trip. I’d rather have too many caches planned rather than too few, so I’ve planned two massive routes that I doubt I’ll get to complete.

Oklahoma doesn’t have a huge amount of caches but it has a few power trail. It’s those I’m targeting, with a view that they will be easy and I should be able to rack up some numbers whilst away.

The problem is that these power trails are narrow and long, so my usual method of finding a cache...
