Epic Journal – 3rd April 2014

3rd April 2014

Second night of storms and it’s slowly dawning on me that in a month’s time I’m going to be there, doing this, with them.

I’m trying to prep myself for the fact that seeing a tornado is like finding a needle in a haystack. This was the second night of busts on what was expected to be a good tornado potential. I hope that the others chasing with me want to actually chase rather than just tour

Day 2 – Now They Try To Drown Us

After Day 1 was such an eventful day I was prepared and quite willing to accept that future days wouldn’t be able to live up to that first day. I was wrong!

The day started off with discussion of yesterday’s intercept. View seems to be that there were two tornadoes we saw, one either side of us. The one to our left is confirmed as an EF-2 and was 0.75 miles wide. It passed within a few hundred feet of us.

We then went to Tusccaloosa where we met up with the Dominators. They look even more impre...

Epic Journal – 2nd April 2014

2nd April 2014

Last night was my Advanced Storm Spotter Training. It was brilliant because this actually happened during a tornado watch and we were able to look at live data. They’d warned they might have to cancel because of the bad weather and the resources they’d need dealing with monitoring that but it happened just outside their area so training went ahead (although it amused me greatly to think my training on bad weather actually cancelled by bad weather).

The training was pretty intense...

Epic Journal – 1st April 2014

This month I fly to the US

This month I get my first cache outside the UK

This month I will be chasing.

And still, nobody knows!

This is beyond exciting.

TVN have sent through a new bonus TV episode on Tornado science which I have watched and could mostly understand.

What really surprises me throughout this journey is how little we know about tornadoes. You’d think in this age of science we’d know more than we actually do. This is why storm spotters play a vital role in the science.

I...

Epic Journal – 31st March 2014

31st March 2014

I’m officially a storm spotter. Today I received my certificate. I am geekily excited about this but cannot tell anyone!

I have my advanced course tomorrow night but amusingly, this may be cancelled due to bad weather. A multi-day storm front is coming in and it may mean the guys at the National Weather Service are busy with alerts and the like.

Today was the day before the day, but time I got home from sword fighting, most of the storms had died. Also, the area for today’s Torna...
