Utah to Arizona and Valentine's
Back home for one day then I'm off to Arizona. I'll be doing a book signing in Phoenix at the address below.
Wednesday, February 16, 2011
Book Signing at Barnes & Noble Phoenix
7pm @ 21001 N. Tatum Blvd. Suite 42, Phoenix, AZ 85050
Then I'll be doing an appearance at Maricopa high school on Thursday the 17. Friday through Sunday I'll be in Tucson visiting family and hopefully doing some events too.
I had a fantastic book signing in Utah with 100 people coming out. It took me over an hour to get all the books signed. Can I just say that my fans are awesome! They came in T-shirts with their own stuffed tigers carrying old books and new ones. Utah rocks!

On Friday I went to Springville and spoke at Merit Academy and Reagan Academy. The kids were so fun! They brought in books from the Orem Barnes & Noble store and sold out quickly. The librarian is taking orders for more this week. I got a lot of pictures of kids hugging the tiger and even had one parent bring his videocamera so we could tape me with his kids.

The next day I went all over the Salt Lake Valley signing books at Barnes & Noble stores so if you missed me on Thursday you can still get a signed book at any store there including Bountiful.

I went to a Penguin author event featuring five YA authors and took pictures. Authors were-Beth Revis, Across the Universe, Ally Condie, Matched, Andrea Cremer, Nightshade, Brenna Yovanoff, The Replacement, and Kirsten Miller, The Eternal Ones. There were about 150 attendees and it was held in the downtown SLC library. Beautiful venue. I missed having dinner with Beth but enjoyed the extra time with my in-laws.

Headed off to Arizona tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing my brothers and sisters. Today is Valentine's Day and though me and my husband are planning to celebrate it later, I'll leave you with a few Valentine's thoughts.
Here's a poem by Robert Burns
A Red, Red Rose
O, my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June.
O, my Luve's like a melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair as thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run:
And fare thee well, my only luve!
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.
During Valentine's I like to do something for everyone in my family and decorate. I have a Valentine mailbox that sits on the counter that's the perfect place to stuff Valentine's cards. I also like twinkle lights and have colored lights for almost every holiday. My February ones are purple and pink. I sollect children's books for every holiday and like to sit and read with my nieces and nephews when they come over to visit. The ones who live far away send me little valentines with candy hearts that often get crushed in the mail. I like to send them holiday cards with stickers or a gift certificate to Baskin Robbins.
A perfect Valentine's day to me includes the following:
1) Chocolate (this is my number one for a reason)
2) Hand Holding
3) Flowers (preferably roses)
4) A Fancy Dinner (either made at home or at a restaurant)
5) Music (Romantic music is nice but since Brad is Deaf it's usually not on his radar)
6) Candles (I like scented ones and the other bonus is that candlelight makes everyone more attractive)
7) Dressing Up (It often seems like I dress up more for my fans than my husband so I try to make a special effort when we celebrate Valentine's)
8) Long Stemmed Dipped Strawberries (not a requisite but really romantic)
That's it for me. What are some of your favorite Valentine's Day traditions? How did you celebrate Valentine's Day?

Valentine's

Hi!
I am heading out on tour for the next few weeks so I wanted to tell you a few things before I go. First, we've added two more countries to our list of foreign publishers-Portugal and the Czech Republic.
The big news, which some of you have heard, is that Tiger's Curse made it on the New York Times Bestsellers list, debuting at number six on the Children's Chapter Book's section. This is amazing and wonderful and it means I get to put that title by my name now. What an awesome thing that is! If you look it up, it should post next week. Publisher's get wind of the list earlier than the rest of us.
We're going to do something special on the website for Valentine's Day. There have been whispers of new e-cards and I wrote some bonus material too so keep checking back if you want to celebrate Valentine's with the tigers. =)
Seventeen Magazine is giving away a copy of Tiger's Curse for Valentine's Day. Here is a link.“Get into a V-Day state of mind with Tiger’s Curse. Enter to win a signed copy at Seventeen:”
I had a fantastic time at my last two events. I went to the Costco store out by the Portland Airport which is the busiest Costco in the world. This is likely because Oregon doesn't have any sales tax and that store is right across the border between Washington and Oregon. They had a lot of books for me to sign. More than any place I've been in. My mom sat with me at the table and she is a great saleswoman. If a shopper even looked at her she had them buying not one book but one for each grandchild. Dad went shopping and took a nap in the car and my husband carted books back and forth from my table to the book section so I could sign all their stock.
On Friday night I had a book signing at the Clackamas Town Center Mall Barnes & Noble in Portland. We had about 75 people in attendance and it was standing room only. I gave out some prizes like old posters and T-shirts and my own personal copy of the galley of Tiger's Quest. The woman who won was approached by several people asking if they could buy it from her. She didn't sell. I used a PowerPoint presentation for the first time which made me much more comfortable. People could look at beautiful tigers as I spoke. My husband said I seemed more relaxed during this presentation than others. If you ever publish a book and want a terrific event organized, head to Page at that Barnes & Noble store. She is amazing and did a fantastic job!
Today I'm flying to Seattle where I'll be doing a presentation at Ballard high school on the 8th and then my main event at 7:00 pm.
Barnes & Noble U-Village
2675 NE University Village Street
Seattle, WA 98105
Phone: 206-517-4107
On Wednesday, I'll fly to Salt Lake City, Utah and I'll do an event there at 7:00 pm on Thursday the 10th:
Barnes & Noble
7157 Plaza Center Drive
West Jordan, UT 84084
Phone: 801-282-1324
I may also be doing another Costco event while in Salt Lake as well. I'm going to attend a Penguin event on the 11th. They'll have five of their YA authors in one place so I'll get to meet Beth Revis, Across the Universe, and Ally Condie, Matched, and have them sign my books. I found out that Beth and I not only had our debut novels released on the same day but we also have the same birthday so we really are soul sisters. There is talk about her publicist and mine arranging for us to have dinner together. Makes me feel a bit like a toddler being set up for a play date. =)
I return home for a day and a half and then fly out to Arizona on Tuesday. On Wednesday February 16th I have an event at 7:00 pm at:
Barnes & Noble
21001 N. Tatum Blvd.
Phoenix, AZ 85050
480-538-8520
On the 17th I'll be speaking at Maricopa high school and then I'll drive down to Tucson. We're trying to set up some events in Tucson where I grew up and hopefully I'll have some time to hit some of my old favorite places and spend time with the four brothers and sisters and their families who live there.
I'll try to blog from the road and send out pictures from the events!
Have a great couple of weeks and happy Valentine's Day!

Hi Everybody,
I wanted to update you on a few things. First, we have some exciting news. We've just landed an audiobook deal! I'm very excited to get the opportunity to listen to the book. Everybody chime in and let me know what kind of a voice you think would be best. Should it be a young woman like Kelsey reading in first person or should we have a Nilima voice or a Mr. Kadam? Do you think it should be just a typical American actor or an Indian actor? Would you prefer a male or a female? We've been very busy selling the series around the world and I'm listing all my information below so you can see where the tigers are headed and when the books will be released in other languages. One thing for sure is that the tigers are going global.
Country Publisher
Brazil Editora Sextante (Portuguese)
Hungary Könyvmolyképző Publisher
Russia AST/ASTREL
Spain RBA Libros
Poland Otwarte
Taiwan Locus Publishing (complex Chinese characters)
United Kingdom Hodder
Germany Heyne
Greece Platypus Book Co.
China Beijing Yutian Hanfeng Book Co. (simplified characters)
Korea Woongjin Think Big Co.
Thailand Kaewkarn Publishing
We'll post links, covers, and pub dates for these countries as soon as they come in.
Meanwhile, I'm moving along swimmingly in book four, Tiger's Destiny, and just incorporated a Native American myth from the Northwest. I found it when reading about Mount St. Helens.
Hope you all have a great week and that I get to see some of you at Barnes & Noble on Friday.

Powell's Event
I finally get to settle down and write this week which is something I've haven't been able to do for a while. I had a great event at Powell's last Thursday in Beaverton, Oregon. A good sized group showed up and I had a lot of people I knew in the audience which is always fun.We had a good number of Deaf people in the audience so Powell's graciously provided an interpreter who ended up being a good friend of mine. He was assisted by a good friend of mine who is one of my former coworkers. First I did a reading of the first couple pages of the prologue of Tiger's Curse which ended up being a really bad decision for the interpreter. Though his wife and mom have both read the book, his mom being one of the Lindas the book is dedicated to in fact, he hasn't. The poor guy had to fingerspell Bhreenam, Mujulaain, Lokesh, etc. I felt really bad and will choose a better selection next time. I should know better which is the really sad thing.
After the reading we had a great Q & A discussion which included some good questions I haven't been asked before. For example, I was asked which book in the series is my favorite. The answer is Voyage. Another one asked why the eyes of the tiger were so blue. I came up with something really profound like...because they're pretty. I just signed books after that. It was a very exciting and fun kick off for the Curse tour. My next stop is a Costco in Portland on Saturday, which is great because it's it free sample day and I love browsing the book section anyway. Below are a few pictures.
Isn't that poster pretty? I singed it with a silver marker and it's up in their author display now. Have a great week everybody!

Back From California
I returned from California late last night to find an ice covered car in the airport long term parking. The drive home was slow but uneventful and I finally crawled into bed around midnight.
So to catch you up on the doings of the last few days...when last I blogged I was on a train. Judi and I checked into a very interesting hotel called The Standard. They had egg chairs hanging from the ceiling, shag carpet on the walls, and very strange furniture. The couches were very low, the rooms had silver beanbags, and the showers and sinks featured orange tiles from a 1970's style dorm room. During the evening, at check in, a young female reclines in a glass box behind the front desk on a twin mattress and checks her email. She's dressed in just a T-shirt and boxers. It's called the chicquarium, I found out. Instead of plants they have a cactus in each room, boxed water instead of bottled, and they also have a DJ scrambling party music in the lobby. The food at their restaurant was fabulous though.
So Monday we were picked up by Jeff, a sales rep with Sterling, and we went around to see some independent bookstores and sign their stock. We went to Vroman's, Mrs. Nelson's, Book Soup, and the San Marino Toy & Book Shoppe.
After that we headed to lunch at Smitty's Grill. They make fantastic homemade potato chips and a giant chicken pot pie. I just got the Chicken Caesar Salad.
Then Jeff dropped me and Judi off at the Clarity Media Group Offices where I had a session with former award winning television reporter and anchor, Susan Campos. She was fantastic and made me feel right at home on camera. Which is good since I have a television spot coming up and I'm a bit nervous.
We finished with Susan at 8:00 pm and she dropped us off at a restaurant where she knew the owner. His name was Dmitri, I think he was Greek. He took very good care of us and arranged a table though we didn't have a reservation. Someone famous must have been inside because there were some paparazzi standing around waiting for someone to come out. I never saw anyone I recognized but they might've snuck out the back way. It's called The Tower Bar. Here's a menu. We got Truffle Mac & Cheese to share alongside our fish dishes. It was my first time eating truffles and it's not what I expected. To me it's very pungent and tastes almost like a woodsy, firm mushroom. The picture of Mac and Cheese below is the closest thing I can find to how it looked. This one is from a different restaurant.
Finally got back and climbed into bed.

THE BOOK GOES ON SALE!
Tuesday morning Judi left. She was supposed to spend opening day with me but she hurried back to NYC because another snow storm was coming and her flight that afternoon was canceled so lucky she got out in the morning. I had a fun day. I ate breakfast with my movie producer, Raffi, who'd just returned from China bearing gifts. He brought me a beautiful scroll that he got made in the Forbidden City. The person who did it was a nephew of the last emperor of China. The large calligraphy symbol is one of four that means tiger. On the upper right is my name in Chinese script. On the left is a wish for luck or good wishes, and the entire bottom is the seal for the artist and his name and title which is rather long. Raffi tagged along to the first stop I made which was the Barnes & Noble store in the Grove. It's a beautiful outdoor mall and Mario Lopez happened to be filming an episode of his show right outside the bookstore. I also got to see the car from The Green Hornet movie pull into the parking structure. For some reason I thought it was just a crazy car with machine guns on the hood and when the valet said it was Green Hornet's car it threw me. I guess I assumed the car would be green for some reason. It's not in reality.
Next, I headed to the Westwood B & N store. Signed books there.
Then, I went to Santa Monica to the B & N on the pier. They had the poster up which was cool. David helped me out. He doesn't look too happy in the picture but he was very friendly.
The coolest visit though was the Americana Mall B & N store. I met with Bob who I think is the store manager. He said there are some people here who'd like to meet you. He took me over to some very exuberant employees who were very excited. They had not one display but two and more Tiger books than any other store I'd visited. They have a poster up on the highest window of the building. The mall is beautiful too. In the pictures you'll see Jessica, Jenn, Tammy, and Bob, and there was one more but I didn't get her name.
So after my adventures, I flew home and woke up today to see Tiger's Curse climb the rankings. The highest I've seen it on Barnes & Noble's website is 2! That is AWESOME! It's still steadily climbing Amazon's rankings as well. Two of my sisters in Arizona took a trip to their bookstore and took pictures with my youngest nephews. You can see he's much happier holding the toy than the book. Aww. My two little handsome princes in training.
Whew! Busy long weekend which I am happy to wrap up. Have a happy day everybody!

ALA Conf Days 2-3
I am now writing from the seat of an AMTRAK train heading to Los Angeles. It's quite a fun way to travel. There's plenty of leg room, a little fold out desk to work on, and a conductor actually came by asking for tickets. He even had a hole punch just like in the Polar Express movie. It's too dark to see the California coastline but it's much more comfy than flying and the tickets are value bargains.
We have our five winners of the first edition signed copy of Tiger's Curse in the limited edition souvenir Kelsey suitcase. We have announced to the winners and are waiting confirmation to share their names with all of you.
So yesterday I had a fabulous breakfast with Cindy and Judi, my editor and marketing director, at the hotel then we met up again at the convention center. As I got ready to sign books a line formed around the side of the booth and Chris, who was running our show, schmoozed the crowd. I had a great assistant, Simone, who flapped all the books, which means she opened them to the page I needed to sign and wrote the name on a post-it so I didn't have to ask how to spell names. A great crowd formed since fantastic treats were being offered which were provided by Sterling's library marketing team, led by Chris Vaccari. They even had chocolate fondue! Some teen bloggers came in, bought the book, and then returned. One brought a friend, shoved her to the table and said, "Buy this book." The other came back to tell me what chapter she was on and that she loved it.
We held an impromptu reception for a few people specially invited for appetizers and goodies in the hotel lounge and then all the girls, me, Cindy, Simone, Judi, and Danielle had a girl's night out dinner at Quarter Kitchen. My favorite dish there was the burrata cheese with mint walnut pesto and grilled country bread. The cheese and pesto was served in a Mason jar. Best appetizer ever!
Today I had breakfast at Cafe 222 which was featured on on of Food Network's Best Things I Ever Ate show. Bobby Flay loved their peanut butter and banana French toast. I actually saw that show. I ordered it and it was good but I had to take out the banana. I haven't been able to eat them since my 20's but still breakfast was fun. I spent the afternoon with Judi. We drove all over San Diego signing books in stores so they'd have autographed copies ready to sell on Tuesday and then we hopped the train.
I'm using my phone as a wi-fi and my batteries are almost dead so I'm not going to upload pictures right now but Judi, my travel buddy, just loaded pictures on the facebook page that you can check out. The Facebook page is just called Tiger's Curse.
Have a great day and I'll check in with you next from Los Angeles!
