Ryan the Speechless.
It was all I could think about on the way home. Now he knew what it was like. What it was like to want to say something but not say it, so that all the words stay inside and get all tangled up.
Cat-Got-Your-Tongue Ryan (and you can bet Ryan would skin that cat alive if he ever caught him, even though There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as Mr. Binsley would say, though he stopped saying it after some parent phoned Bubbles Brezhnev and made a stink about animal rights). I never thought I’d see the day.
Ryan, his mouth sewn real tight, staring at Lucy, not saying a word after she called him Gutless. Silent Ryan. I kept expecting him to look like Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, all wound up, ready to explode. But instead Ryan kept staring at Lucy with this dead, zombie look in his eyes, like all the anger had been poured out and all you’re left with are empty eyes waiting for a refill.
I would have kept on thinking about Ryan but then I heard it.
A siren.
And then I saw it.
An L-3 rescue pumper. It can pump up to 2000 gpm.
It came barreling down the street. It’s like the truck was Moses and everything in its way was the Red Sea. By the time I got to the building there were firefighters heading into the lobby and others looking busy as bees. I didn’t see any smoke. I didn’t smell anything either. A woman next to me looked up at the top of the building.
Nothing, she said. I could tell she was disappointed. Not a lick of flames. No smoke, neither. She shook her head. Nothing.
It’s like she was waiting for some amazing high wire act and all she got was some lame ventriloquist whose lips moved.
She sucked on her teeth. A waste of time. She pointed to the front door. Three firefighters were heading back to their truck. Mine and theirs.
I knew what she meant but I didn’t want to say anything. The last thing I wanted was to start chatting with Miss-I-Want-My-Money-Back. I could tell she was the type that would talk my ear off, smack her lips, and then start on the other ear. Besides, she wasn’t really expecting me to say anything. She wasn’t like Lucy. This was a one-way conversation.
I could have been home, watching TV. But when I heard the sirens I came right over, expecting…
She held out a hand and looked up and down at the building and sighed. Every brick was a disappointment.
Expecting more than this. She shook her head again. Much more.
She turned around and walked away. She patted a firefighter on the shoulder. A Sorry for troubling you pat. He gave her a What the heck? look but she didn’t notice. She kept on walking.
I looked back the building. I didn’t blame it the way Miss-I-Want-My-Money-Back did. But I was hoping for some flames. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt or freak out about a lost pet or end up on television, bawling their eyes out. But I like fires. I like how they have a mind of their own. I like how you have to take them seriously. I like how they grab your attention.
The firefighters gathered their gear and drove off. I looked at the silent sirens on top of the truck and thought of Silent Ryan.
He wouldn’t stay silent for long.

It’s still loosely mythology-based (though I’m going to make you read the book to figure out how it relates to mythology, exactly) and for those of who are worried, it’s still very much a romance. I’ve been teasing little hints about it for over a year now, so I’m very happy to finally be able to talk about it openly.

THE LAUNCH PARTY
Now, this is very exciting! If you live in the Salem, Oregon area, or have just always longed to visit, you might want to save the date of May 9th. I’m hosting a TERRAFORMER launch party in my hometown of Salem at my favorite grocery store of all time, ROTH’S! It might sound like a strange place for a party, but trust me, it’s not. This store is AH-MA-ZING. Seriously.
You might recall that the TIGER’S DREAM launch party happened in the downtown Salem public library. Well, that’s not possible right now because it’s closed for renovations and when I began looking for event space, everyone kept saying, go to ROTH’S. It just so happens that I actually wrote most of TERRAFORMER on the balcony of that store overlooking the gorgeous produce department, which is going to make a LOT of sense when you start reading the book.
Also, they make great made-to-order lunches and have an outstanding salad bar right downstairs. It’s basically a writer’s dream with dozens of interesting characters walking around downstairs who I can easily study from my bird’s eye perch.
Anyhoo, my launch parties, if you didn’t know, are pretty epic. Those who have attended my events can give a shout out in support. We are planning on some fun and fabulous games. There will be prizes, of course. My mom and I will be dressing up sort of matchers. Then there will be food. Oh…the food. ROTH’s is one of the last grocery stores that still makes homemade donuts. If that’s not enough to tempt you to head in our direction, you are welcome to peruse the other launch party blog posts to help you make up your mind.

Oh, and did I mention that this was a PRE-launch party? That means that those who come to this one are getting their hands on the book EARLY…as in, BEFORE everyone else!
But be warned. Space is limited. Get it? SPACE?! HEE. HEE. Grab a ticket before they’re sold out! You don’t want to miss your shuttle to paradise!
TERRAFORMER: Countdown to Publication: The Contest
So this contest is going to be a little something for everyone. Some of you just like to do click and follow type stuff or review books and I love that. Some of you are the more artsy type and want to do Dress up the Cover creations or love Cosplay or want to participate in our Topiary battle. This is going to be a pick and choose how you want to play. Obviously the more effort you put in, the better your chances of winning, but if you’re the type that loves social media and tweeting or shooting Instagram photos, you can do that as often as you like to make up the difference so it should even out in the end.
We’re going to start the contest a little early to give you creative types, time to come up with your art. Once you create, all you have to do is take a picture and share it once on some social media site and attach it to the Rafflecopter via a link. If you want to share it more often, you can, but the big points only count once per art project. Remember, it has to be your original work, not someone else’s. You are also welcome to do all the typical rafflecopter entries if you like as well.

My Projects
Personally, I’m planning on making a topiary, a headpiece, a costume, and I might just try my hand at a cake. Dressing up the cover is always fun. I love playing with food and appetizer ideas. We’ll be having some amazing treats at the party including edible flowers! I can’t wait to see what all of you create! Don’t forget to tell me how many points you think your project/s are worth. Patches & Bookplates
We are now offering international fans the opportunity to get signed bookplates. For those of you who don’t know what a bookplate is, it’s typically a sticker you affix onto the title page of your book. It’s not as valuable as an official signature on a page to a book collector, but it’s the next best thing. You can order up to three bookplates per envelope. Note: These are just Colleen Houck signatures. The stickers will not be personalized and nothing else will be added.
To have up to 3 bookplates shipped anywhere worldwide the cost will be $5.00 US. Enter the number of bookplates you would like to have below. If you put a number higher than 3, only 3 will be shipped. To order more, simply go through the process again by entering the number you want and clicking the button.

What else would you like to see in the store? Some have asked my mom if she would make them a Tiger’s Curse Jean Jacket. Not sure how much to charge for that one. It takes a while. She’s collected the patches and the jacket to make a Lantern’s Ember jacket. We’ll have to post the pictures when she’s done. I’m also considering making Christmas ornaments.

Summer Gift Pack
It’s here! I know you’ve been waiting for this one and I’ll admit, I’ve been putting it off on purpose. I’ve had to collect some stock, you see, and it’s taken me a while. Now this one’s going to be more expensive than my other gift packs. The reason for this is because the hardback is now out of print. You should also note that this one is offered only until my supplies run out. I don’t have many and they were really hard to find. I had to search far and wide and had to pay a pretty penny just to get these editions which is why it’s more spendy than usual.

Spring Gift Pack
For the spring gift pack I’ve selected Tiger’s Voyage. I’ve got several newbies who’ve signed up for my newsletter thanks to the recent YA Scavenger Hunt and a timely school visit to Walker Middle School in my hometown of Salem, Oregon. Go Wildcats! So how this works is…every few months or so I offer up a special prize pack with some exclusive swag, a signed and stamped hardback and other awesome goodies, shipped out at a special price. And, for those of you who’ve signed up for my newsletter, I pick two subscribers randomly to win a prize pack. All you have to do to win is open the newsletter and figure out it’s your email.
