New Book Reveal!
Hello Readers!
I am so excited to finally tell you about my top secret book project. I’ve been working on it since February and now we’re finally ready to tell you all about it!
As many of you know, I love Halloween. I decorate my entire home and we average about three hundred and fifty trick-or-treaters every year. I always ask the older kids if they are at least twelve and they hang their heads in shame thinking I won’t be giving them any candy, but then they gasp in surprise when I tell them they get candy AND a book.
Last year I gave them a choice between Tiger’s Curse and Reawakened.
But, in 2018, I’ll be handing out my brand new book. It’s based on the legend of Sleepy Hollow. My main character is Jack, as in Jack of the Lantern, and he falls in love with a witch named Ember O’Dare.

We’re working on the cover right now but we’ll reveal it as soon as it’s ready. I’m so excited to bring you a Halloween book! It has everything from black cats to pumpkins to cauldrons and spells. If you’re a Halloween fanatic like me, you’ll want to add this one to your collection.
And, last but not least, I give you title. My new book, debuting fall 2018 will be called…

“Writing a book is never a particularly straightforward process, and so when I considered which deleted scene from BLOOD ROSE REBELLION to include in the YA Scavenger Hunt, I had lots to choose from. The book went through many revisions before it hit the shelves: at one point I cut nearly 30k from the story (including an encounter with bandits that I loved, but didn’t quite fit the story—but I’m happy to say I’ve repurposed some of those scenes for book 2, LOST CROW CONSPIRACY). Another revision saw nearly as much cut and rewritten, not to mention all the scenes that were transformed during edits.
I’ve settled on a scene that isn’t particularly spoilery, but was deeply satisfying to write. If you’ve read BLOOD ROSE REBELLION, you know it starts off with the MC, Anna, dealing with a caddish and dishonorable suitor. He doesn’t really show up again in the book, but in an earlier draft, I dragged him back just so Anna could finally confront him as he deserved.
For readers keeping track, this scene would have fallen around the current chapter 17 of the novel, when Anna has gone to visit Lady Berri in Buda-Pest and agrees to try and help Lady Berri break a spell. (You might also notice that Anna’s maid Ginny was Jenny in earlier versions—until it finally occurred to me that Jenny was too close to my sister’s name, Jeni, and she might not appreciate being made into a lady’s maid, particularly as she also has reddish hair and freckles and endured too many sessions of playing “princess” with me growing up, where I was the grand lady and she was my maid—the perils of being a younger sister with a bossy elder sister. Sometimes your subconscious holds onto things and puts them in your books without permission).

Announcing Fall 2017 YASH Teams!
For all of you who love finding new reads, I have just the thing for you. The YA Scavenger Hunt is coming. If you’ve never heard of it, the hunt runs twice a year in the spring and in the fall. Reunited Book Trailer Contest winners announced!
The long awaited moment came and went with the release of Colleen Houck’s latest book and book trailer in August and was celebrated with a party at her local Powell’s book store with a bang!

The Reunited Launch Party!
For those of you who are curious as to what I do to prep for a launch party, I decided to show you through pictures.
Usually, the first thing that happens is I get my author copies of the book in the mail. The paperback of Recreated was released around the same time as the hardbacks of Reunited.
Next up, I get my nails done. I like them to look nice for a book event so I do a plain French manicure on my hands and then try to match my feet to the book cover.
For the Reawakened series, I’ve dressed up for each book, buying a dress that matched the cover. Here they all are with their corresponding books. I didn’t do a launch party for Reignited so I don’t have a dress for that one but I probably would have chosen the one below. I really like that the orange dress looks like it has wings.
Once my jewelry and dress is picked out, I focus on hair. For this book launch I decided to go long. My hair is currently four different colors and it was hard to find extensions that matched, so my mom sewed the dark color in my hair right now into the extensions we bought and then we supplemented with purple.
I also get my makeup done for each book event. My makeup girl is named Madeline. She’s super cute and really good at her job. She’s been with me since Tiger’s Curse. I’m using these butterfly wing hot pink and purple striped eyelashes for this event. You can see the extensions on the back of the table.
Next up is planning the giveaways. In addition to copies of Reignited and Tiger’s Promise, we put together some purple themed gift bags with tee shirts, purses, makeup, candy, purple popcorn, cute purple travel sewing kits, lotion, basically anything we could find that was purple.
When we got to Powell’s, I headed to the back of the store to get changed since I live an hour away and also I started signing all the preorders. You can really get a good idea of what my hair looked like in this shot. Also the lashes. Woah.
An extra giveaway we did this time was something my mom came up with. She has developed a love of patches and making her own fandom jean jackets. She made one for the Reawakened series and showed it off at the event. Since it was the same price to print five custom book patches as it was to print fifty, we gave away a dozen or so packets. I had no idea there were so many crafters out there! Out of the sixty attendees, probably fifty raised their hands wanting a packet.
We are planning to give out some more at the Tiger’s Dream launch including Tiger series patches so you don’t want to miss out on that launch party!
First up was a Q & A. I got a lot of my standard questions, including the oft asked, “When is the movie coming?” and “What about Tiger’s Dream?” The Q & A lasted about twenty minutes or so, then it was on to giveaways, the book signing, and pictures. The fan who won the prize for coming the furthest distance was from Eugene, Oregon, about a two hour drive.
Afterwards, we finished the evening as we often do at Olive Garden. Can’t wait to launch Tiger’s Dream! As soon as we narrow down a publication date, I’ll announce it. Also excited to announce my next book with Delacorte which will debut in the fall of 2018. The announcement will be during the YA Scavenger Hunt this October!

Book review for kids, by kids-Captain Underpants
For those of you who are looking for new books appropriate for middle grade that both boys and girls might enjoy, this is the place to look!
Every month, a new book (or two) will be added for review right here and they will be reviewed by the best critics, KIDS! That’s right, the one’s who read them will be the judge!
This blog is written by my smart and witty nephew, Alexander. He’s one of the best closers I’ve met and has an infectious laugh. He loves to watch movies in his pajamas with a cup of hot chocolate, some of my favoritist things too!
First, for those just tuning in, may I introduce Lex.
“Hi readers. I am almost 11 years old, I’m going into middle school (yikes!), I love Vietnamese food, I want to be a famous actor or you-tube star, I like pretty much everything that is from Japan (Legend of Zelda, Totoro, Japanese animation shows and movies, and lots of other things), and like listening to music on my I-phone. I also love going on vacations (especially to see Aunt Colleen and grandma) and staying in nice hotels!”

book review for kids, by kids!
2nd Book Review of Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets
By Dav Pilkey
Book Setting:
The story takes place in George’s house, Harold’s house, the school where they attend and George’s tree house. George and Harold are best friends and do everything together but the school principle threatens their friendship and they can’t let that happen.
Main Characters:
Harold- he has yellow hair and wears a striped shirt. He is a really good artist.
George Beard- he has black hair and wears a tie. He is really great at writing and telling stories.
Mr. Krupp- he is the school principle and is very strict.
Plot:
George Beard and Harold are best friends and love to pull off very big, funny pranks. They also love to create funny comic books and work well together. The principal Mr. Krupp however, hates their comics and pranks. George and Harold get in trouble and surprisingly hypnotizes Mr. Krupp into their made up comic book super hero, Captain Underpants.
This is where their crazy adventures take place of trying to keep Mr. Krupp out of danger while also protecting themselves from getting in trouble. Along the way, they learn some important lessons.
My review:
I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t think to pick up this book until I saw the movie just recently over the summer. I thought the movie was really funny so I borrowed my brother’s copy of the book and turned to page one and started reading. I really liked the book and the story was pretty similar to the movie. I think the characters are relatable and likeable. Harold and George are best friends and just like them, my brother and I work on comic books too (but my brother is a much better artist than I am so he’s more like Harold). I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was funny and imaginative. I recommend this book to anyone who likes potty jokes and comics. Even my little sister who is 2 years old really liked it and giggled a lot so it’s good for younger children too.
