I might be a tad cynical.
As part of my job as an Avionics Standards sergeant, I oversaw an exam this morning--the final exam of the course. One of the students got 100%, his 10th out of 15 exams, for an overall course average of 98%.
I told him if there were another Forces Reduction Program starting today he'd be the first to go. The military would be all, "Hey, You! Get the f@&k out. We don't need no smart people like you making the rest of us look bad. Where's that dumb kid, bottom of the class? He'll be a Chief in no time."

Day 3 of the Apocalypse
I received my second rejection letter from an agent I queried about twenty minutes after the first one last night. Apparently agents read their email late at night--who knew?
I must say, even though both were rejections, my experience so far has been better than when I was querying for DARKSIDE, in that the response has been fast, and both letters were very polite.
Other than an acceptance, what more can you ask from a potential agent?

Day 2 of the Apocalypse
And the first agent rejection is in! Not bad, only one day.

Day 1 of the Apocalypse
Sent out my first query letters this morning. I hate that combined feeling of hope and dread. Well, especially the dread part.

PSA
Remember that one little bit of good fortune I asked for about three months ago? Still waiting.
Btw, I'm fully stocked with bad luck, so all future deliveraries will be returned unopened.
Thanks.

Heartfelt Thanks
So the query letter is pretty much finished. I'd like to thank all of you who helped and encouraged me. I couldn't have done it without you. Well, I could have, but it would have sucked. (I think I'm just going to go with THE MOONLIGHT WAR as a title right now.)
Now I just have to figure out where to send it. Does anyone know of or recommend agents representing heroic fantasy right now?
What's the best resource for finding such agents?

What was I thinking?
My initial impetus for writing THE NOVEL WITH HALF A NAME was: What if the movie PITCH BLACK were written as a heroic fantasy by David Gemmell or George R.R. Martin? And so we have ___ ____ ____: The Moonlight War: Book 1
I don't know how well I've succeeded; it was certainly the most ambitious book that I've written to date- so much so that many of the characters and themes I wanted to explore just wouldn't fit into this one novel. Still, I'm quite happy with the finished product, and while the first book works as a stand-alone story it's meant to be the first in a series. Hopefully I'll get the chance to tackle those missed themes in later books.
That is if I can ever finish this @#%# query letter.

Query Letter Lament
Damn, but this query letter rigmarole is frustrating. Seriously, how many other professions require so much work and creative effort simply to OFFER SOMEONE A JOB.
This is why people self-publish.
