Round and round.
The dermatologist did two biopsies a couple of weeks ago. Got the results today. The one on my back was nothing, but the one behind my right ear is basal cell carcinoma so they'll have to cut it off. Um...the mole, not the ear--I hope. Thankfully it wasn't melanoma this time, although the cure is the same. Another nice scar for me. Remember when I asked for something good to happen a few months back? Still waiting.

If Pixar made a movie of my life, it would be called UP-itty.
I have come to the conclusion that I am out of touch with what people like.
I gave up on writing short stories a long time ago, deciding that I was more a novel writer. Editors weren't buying the kind of short story I liked to write, and I didn't enjoy the kind of short stories they liked to publish.
I'm beginning to wonder, however, if I have the same issue with novels. Most of the agents told me they loved Darkside, they just didn't think there was a market for it. I'm worried that the same may be true for The Moonlight War.
Certainly my track record with movies lately has been dismal. I loved John Carter, thought Battleship was pretty decent, and thoroughly enjoyed Rock of Ages. (I just read a review where a critic complained that Tom Cruise couldn't sing? What? Did he watch/listen to the same movie I did? He may not be a great singer, but then most of the people he tried to emulate aren't either.)
Anyway, I'm not sure what to do, because this writing thing is way too hard if I'm only writing for myself.
Maybe it's just age. Soon I'll be standing on my porch with my trousers pulled up to my nipples, waving my cane and shouting for them dang kids to get off'n my lawn.
Though seriously, I don't think there's an aspect of my life lately that's not in a state of flux.

Update
So the agent who requested the first five pages of the Moonlight War a couple of weeks ago declined. I still haven't heard anything from the agent who requested the complete manuscript.
Being the positive, upbeat kind of guy I am, I'm certain this doesn't bode well.

Same meme; different book.
The rules:
1. Go to page 77 (or 7th) of your current ms
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written. No cheating.
From the new Darkside novel (WIP):
"Maybe I should go say something?" I asked Leanne.
Leanne smiled at me sweetly to let me know how ludicrous the idea was. "Because you have such a way with words?"
Okay, she had a point. I seem to have a penchant for saying the wrong thing at the right time. Besides, Sabrina seemed to be handling her husband just fine without me.
I loved Alex like my own daughter--I was her protector, after all--but I wouldn't have wanted to be Josh for all the mocha frappe lattes in Starbucks. Not that I'd ever have to worry on that account.

How had he come to this?
The Ashai. The Ashai had named him, and words had power. He was the Hasa ni do, and the name had changed him.
It had defined him despite all that he’d been, or done. But Tasha had power of his own. The words wouldn’t define who he would become.
Hiro stood, ready, waiting, wary.
Tasha shook his head--a slow, deliberate movement. Perhaps his comfort may have been worth a man's life, but it wasn’t worth a boy's. Especially one with such potential, arrogant though he might be.
Still, talent and arrogance were a bad combination.

Apparently not an exact science.
I had to go for two biopsies yesterday on moles/dark spots that I've had since I was first diagnosed with melanoma almost four years ago, and which haven't changed in all that time. Why, after all this time, the sudden decision to biopsy them? If there was another dermatologist that lived within 100 miles of here, I think I'd change. Oh well, results in two weeks.
(Note: the last two she decided to biopsy a year or so ago turned out to be nothing.)

Now they're just screwing with me!
2 Requests from agents in the same day, one for the 1st 5 pages, and one for the complete manuscript. Y'all can start crossing things again, please.

Stupid rich people
Clint Eastwood's model daughter Francesca has infuriated fashion fans after slashing a $100,000 Hermes Birkin handbag and setting it on fire for a controversial photo shoot, with some even sending death threats about how she “wasted money when families can't eat."
What they should really be up in arms about is the fact that there even is such a thing as a $100K handbag, or that anyone—even if they had the money—would pay that for it. (Unless it comes stuffed with about $999,900 in cash.)
