ANNOUNCING: the winner of our eco fashion correspondent contest

Last month I asked all you kind fashionistas to enter my fashion correspondent contest. The challenge was to submit a photo or collage of your favorite kind ensemble. I was impressed with your creative collages and you showed me a bunch of brands I'm definitely going to investigate.

One grand prizewinner is winning my dress and kicking off our kind fashion series. It was a very tough call with a few really great entries with eclectic styles so I've decided to invite a few of my favorites to contribute guest blogs as well. Each of our correspondents will also receive a piece of clothing from my closet that matches her style.

The correspondents I've chosen all have a different sense of style so hopefully there's something for everyone here! With that I’ll get to the winners already! Here we go:

kind eats: naughty and flirty cookie dough truffles

Ok these cookie dough truffles by Chef Chloe look pretty insane. I haven't made these yet but I hope to in the near future. I want one right now! Super naughty flirty treat. If you make them let me know how it goes.

Check out my recipe for Oozy Gooey Guacamole Dip!

Cookie Dough Truffles

Ingredients

1/2 cup vegan margarine
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tabelspoon pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons water
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
12 oz semisweet chocolate dairy free

Instructions

Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Using a mixer beat margarine brown sugar salt vanilla and water until combined. Add flour and beat until incorporated. Fold in mini chocolate chips. Cover dough and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls with the palms of your hands. Place on prepared baking sheets. Freeze for 15 minutes.

Melt the remaining 12 ounces chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. Let cool to room temperature. Remove one tray of cookie dough balls from the freezer. Dip each ball into the melted chocolate and remove using two forks. Place the coated balls back onto the baking sheet and transfer to the refrigerator. Repeat with the second tray of cookie dough balls. Chill until the chocolate is set about 20 minutes. Store in refrigerator until serving.

What's your favorite sweet treat? Share your recipes on your profile and I'll feature them in the kind recipe gallery

kind holidays: happy first day of summer!

Today is the official first day of summer.

kind holidays: happy first day of summer!

kind holidays: happy first day of summer!

My day started out just right. I ate a superhero breakfast and went to yoga class which always feels great. Yoga is my church. I feel so happy and balanced after my anusara class. The yoga instructor reminded me of how different seasons affect the body.

Summer is a season of extreme weather; it’s not the ideal time for cleanses or fasting spring and fall are better for that. Rather it’s a time to relax and enjoy your life. Get outside. And we naturally eat less during summer because it’s hot. It’s a good time for salads of all varieties grain salads and bean salads included. It’s a time for lighter cooking styles and times…a lighter flair to all you prepare.

Check out my blog from last year about the origin of the summer solstice.

This summer try to do as many of your favorite activities as possible.  If you like going to the beach go as much as you can. Ride your bike as much as you can and just do what you love to do as much as possible.

What summer activities are you looking forward to most?

action alert: help the JSPCA protect israels animals

Kind Lifer Calla recently alerted me to Israel's stray animal problem see video here and gave me some information about how we can help:

The Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals JSPCA is working to reduce the number of stray animals in Israel. They provide adoption services medical attention food and shelter to as many as 350 cats and dogs at a time. Israel has a large neglected and malnourished animal population with cats in particular suffering the most. To combat this problem the JSPCA has teamed up with Spay Israel to help prevent cat overpopulation in the region.

ANNOUNCING: the winner of mays the kind diet giveaway

ANNOUNCING the winner of mays the kind diet giveaway

For last month’s giveaway I asked you to share what your Memorial Day plans were. Our randomly selected winner shared her plans as well as the story of her kind journey so far. Congrats kind lifer Celia!

“Oh goodness I LOVE reading everyone’s ideas!!! I am a very new baby vegan. The change for my life was really simple actually. We are expecting! So I made my appointment for the doctor and a week later was horrified to see that my iron was low and my weight was up 7lbs! I came home with a strong determination . . . to relearn what being healthy means. As I started becoming educated more and more items were evicted from our cupboards and fridge. The last thing I ever expected was to become a vegan. I was the first one to smother something incheese or make it bacon. And with all the crazy food aversions from being pregnant I never thought I could do it! But shockingly enough I can do it!! The benefits went waaay past health. I have not gained a single pound I’m only 13 weeks – no additional weight gain is great right now and my iron is perfect. What I did not expect was the changes in my home life. My husband daughter and I have so much more energy to take walks together. My daughter and I prepare meals together rather than just throwing something together. Cooking food that is nourishing my family is such a wonderful feeling. It has been really fun bringing our fresh healthy dishes to our holiday family functions. Easter the celebration of eggs lol was a challenge but we won the crowd over with our tofu frittata. So for Memorial Day we are having friends and family over for a BBQ. Instead of hotdogs and burgers we will be setting up a yummy veggie shish kabob bar. We are going to have a mass variety of skewer friendly veggies so people can build their own kabobs. I haven’t got all the side dishes figured out yet but reading these comments I am getting some awesome ideas!”

Sounds like a fun kabob party! I like that idea.

kind holidays: my thoughts on fathers day

Bear and Christopher brought me mulberries and flowers from the Farmers Market on Mother's Day

Father’s Day is Sunday June 17! I always like to know the history of the holidays we celebrate so here’s a little backstory on Father’s Day:

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19 1910 in Spokane Washington. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea to honor her father a Civil War veteran who raised his six children as a single parent. How sweet is that? Three years later a bill was introduced to make Father’s Day a national holiday but Congress didn’t want to pass it because ironically they feared it would become too commercial.

It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as an official day to honor fathers. In 1972 President Nixon made it a national holiday by signing President Johnson’s proclamation into law.

As with all holidays Father’s Day has become a big sales pitch…which is really really sad. Just buying presents because we’re being told to misses the point. But we get sucked in and if you decide to boycott a holiday like Father’s Day you look like a jerk!

In our family we dance in between. We are romantics and suckers for any opportunity to celebrate and mark a moment! But we are not big on exchanging gifts. Instead we just really enjoy each other like we do everyday and just try to make holidays about being a family. If you want to do something special send a nice card or make a thoughtful gesture like offering to clean your dad’s house or cook him a nice meal. If you feel you should give a gift pick something eco conscious that your dad really needs.

Here are some more ideas for how you can celebrate a kind Father’s Day plus how my family celebrated Mother’s Day:

The Earth’s precious resources provide an inspiring reason not to buy gifts. Go No Impact Man style! The less we buy the better off we are. And if we do buy let’s make those choices really Earth-friendly. A bonus is that you get to save money at the same time! Win-win. Be creative and heartfelt in what you give – it’s way more meaningful.

Check out last year’s post for some delish Father’s Day recipe ideas!
