lil kind life: alanis morissette responds to time magazine cover controversy
[image error]

Alanis Morissette recently posted an article on The Huffington Post dedicated to the benefits of attachment parenting. Alanis who has a toddler named Ever wrote the piece in response to the recent Time magazine controversy. Here’s an excerpt:
“I personally believe that the attachment stage done well can circumvent countless addictions later in life because many of these addictions are often a temporary attempt at feeling this sense of connection. If a child's needs during this stage of development are not met he or she will be staving off a haunting sense of cellular disconnection and loneliness for a lifetime. They will not have effectively internalized a loving nurturance as their own love-style.”

In the article Alanis discusses how attachment parenting affects children during the different stages of the development process.

My little munchkin recently turned one! We took the photos above the morning of his birthday and made this home video of him opening a present from one of our friends:
One of my missions in life is to stop the production of all the “stuff.” That includes trying to avoid being given gifts we don’t really need. I was proud that Bear’s first birthday gifts were a reflection of our mission. He didn’t get a ton of gifts at all but what he did get was thoughtful and useful. For example my parents and a dear family friend each gave him a check so we could open his first bank account. My dad did this with me when I was little…I remember going to the bank with him. It was really neat at the time! I was a little girl but not as young as Bear as I remember the whole thing.
Christopher’s mom asked us what he needed in advance. He really needed socks so she gave him organic socks made by a company called Baby Legs they also make non-organic socks but she picked the organic ones. How great of her that she asked and did research and found super cute socks! His other gift of course was the ukulele you see in the video made by Zither Heaven from my friend Alex Keeling. It’s so cute and he loves it - he always loves when Daddy plays guitar.

On Bear’s birthday also Cinco de Mayo we attended a party for our great friend’s kid named Calhoun. They gave Bear a school bus made of 100 recycled plastic made by Green Toys. These were all his presents! Not bad for age one! And not too harmful for the planet! Yahoo!

action alert: help ban battery cages
[image error]
Each year millions of laying hens are confined to wire battery cages: tiny spaces that are usually smaller than a single sheet of paper. Citing animal welfare and food safety concerns many have been working for years to have these cages banned and some tremendous progress has been made!
Find out how you can help stop the drugging of racehorses.
Just last week a federal legislation to ban the cages and overhaul the egg industry was introduced to Congress by Senator Dianne Feinstein and the bill S.3239 was backed by a group of bipartisan co-sponsors. If passed this bill will greatly improve the treatment of 280 million hens in the country and will double the amount of space each bird has while also putting an end to forced starvation molting.
To move the bill forward Senator Feinstein will need our help!
Please contact your local Senator and ask them to support Feinstein on S. 3239. You can find your Senator’s information here.
To find out more about battery cages visit The Humane Society’s website here. You can also contact Senator Feinstein here to let her know just how much you appreciate her work on S. 3239.
What animal rights issues are most important to you? Share in the comments section and we will see what we can do to help.

kind cures: kate heals her digestive disorder
[image error]
Kind Lifer Kate stopped taking her prescription medications and is healing her body with a kind diet.
“I have tried a vegetarian diet on and off again for years starting in college. It wasn't until I read Alicia's book and was urged by my homeopath to consider a plant-based diet that I really noticed changes that convinced me to make this a permanent change. I have had a digestive disorder for 20 years been through countless diagnostic procedures surgeries and diagnosis. Since changing my diet I have stopped taking five prescription medications and have reduced an OTC medication from five a day to one every other day or so. The more I do the better I feel with my digestive system and countless other ways I didn't expect! Reading Alicia's book allowed me to shift through the adjustment phase without giving up. Thank you for this new lease on life!”
Congrats Kate and thanks for sharing your story!
