need to find heath crunch ice cream for father's dayhelp!

Once upon a time my husband's favorite treat was Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream. I want him to have his treat for Father's Day…but kind-style! Does anyone know of a good vegan alternative to this? Is there a veg Heath Bar I could mix up with an awesome veg ice cream? Or is there a Ben & Jerry's like vegan ice cream company I don't know about? Help!

lil kind life: bear's coachella style

lil kind life: bear's coachella style

This year my husband and I took Bear to Coachella to enjoy some tunes out in the desert. We lived in a trailer for three days and had our food and kitchen in there. We shared showers with the other campers and had a good fun camper experience. This was our third time doing this! Outside Bear wore noise-canceling headphones to protect his ears and because of the insane heat out in the desert we all made sure to wear sunscreen and such…plus Bear got a new hat! Here's the story:

Bear's Coachella Style
By Christopher Jarecki

We were headed to Coachella for a few days and Bear needed a hat. I went to this great vintage store called Blue Bird on Larchmont in LA and for four bucks got him a great one.

I have tons of other stuff to rage against but for some reason the price of new baby clothes really gets me goin'. So we get most of his clothes as hand me downs from friends…but if your kids' hand me downs aren't doing it check out your local thrift store and stick it to the man.

lil kind life: 10 ways to help your kids go green

Here here! Check out my blog about Blue Bird here. I also want to add that the main reason we prefer hand-me-downs and second-hand clothes for Bear isn’t just the fabulous price but mostly the eco factor. There’s no reason to buy new stuff especially for kids who grow out of their clothes so quickly. But for everything you buy check out used first…the planet is begging you. The people who lack clean water clean food and clean air are begging you.

Also I find it super sweet that my husband went out and did this. I didn’t even ask him to buy a hat for Bear. He just came home and said ‘I got Bear a hat for Coachella.’ What a great daddy for having that thought and going out and getting his baby son a hat! I hope it inspires other guys to go out and take care of their babies’ needs. It doesn’t cost much to go to a vintage store and find something cool – it’s like hunting and gathering but for good stuff! I love the idea and level of involvement. I thought it was really sweet!

Here’s a video and some more pictures of our family weekend at Coachella:

Bear loves his dad’s guitar! The sandals I’m wearing in the picture on the left are in my Open Sky store. They’re made of 100 recycled materials and look & feel great. A must have if you need new flip-flops for summer!

Kind Coachella

We had the most delicious tempeh wraps from this organic stand. The people in the picture above were walking toward the area where they could refill their water bottles. The grounds were really clean and they had different bins for compost recycling and landfill waste. It was so great to see the effort to be more mindful.

How can we get more music festivals be more eco-minded?

goodbye big gulp: will nyc stop selling oversized drinks?

goodbye big gulp: will nyc stop selling oversized drinks?

By now you may have heard about NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed ban on sodas and sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in food service establishments. Citing the nation’s increasing obesity epidemic the Mayor has been both applauded for his firm stand to combat weight issues in his city as well a criticized by some who say that he’s overreaching by taking away consumer’s freedom of choice when it comes to what they eat and drink.

Ten Quick Tips for Curing a Cold

Mayor Bloomberg has been working on this policy for more than two years and with the cost of obesity-related health issues spiraling toward 8 billion in New York state alone according to New York’s Department of Health this latest measure may set an example for other cities to enact similar legislation.

Do you think laws like this will help people to lead healthier lifestyles?

ANNOUNCING: the winner of my new juice beauty collection

announcing the winner of my new juice beauty collection

I recently posted a giveaway for my brand new Juice Beauty make-up and skin care line. The question was what product sounded the most interesting to you. Our randomly-chosen winner Holly W said:

"It is impossible to pick only one since they all sound amazing! However I think I would like to pick the cleanser because as Alicia pointed out during the interview so many products that we use have names that clearly indicate that they are chemically laden and can't be great for the skin. The idea of using a product that is 'kind' not only to my skin but also the community and the planet is lovely. Since I wash my face twice a day a good cleanser that is gentle and made with real products sounds right up my alley! And way to go to Ulta for endorsing a 'kind' product. Can't wait to try them all!"

Congrats Holly! Hope you love the collection!

For more info about my collection check out this interview I did with PopSugar:

kind cure: harlot avoids hysterectomy by giving up dairy

Kind lifer Harlot DeVille has a whole new life now that she’s gone from vegetarian to vegan. Check it out:

"I had been vegetarian since I was 13 years old. Over the years I had terrible pain stomach cramps migraines serious acne and oftentimes fainting spells too. I attended doctors for over 15 years to try and solve my mystery ailment. I was then diagnosed with both Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Endometriosis. My doctor advised that it would be best to undergo hormone treatment and possibly a hysterectomy. At 29 there was no way I wanted to choose either option. I did a lot of research and discovered that dairy played a huge factor in my symptoms; it was then that I made the decision to become vegan. The difference was remarkable. So much so that most of my ovarian cysts disappeared my energy levels improved greatly my emotions balanced my skin cleared up and my migraines disappeared. I was able to socialize again without being conscious of my skin. I was also free from pain. I cannot recommend this enough to anyone dealing with PMS PCOS or Endo. Becoming vegan really did change my life."

kind book club: orgasmic birth

One of my favorite books I read while I was pregnant with Bear was Orgasmic Birth by Elizabeth Davis and Deborah Pascali-Bonaro.

The book is based on the documentary of the same name – I recommend checking out both. They each convey how childbirth can be a joyful experience not the frightening and/or clinical experience we are taught to expect. For anyone who is pregnant read this book ASAP! And I highly recommend it for anyone who is contemplating having a baby.

Check out my comments on the film here.

I can’t recommend the book enough. It’s just a great read: inspiring calming empowering interesting and helpful.

Snag your copy and tell me what your favorite aspects of this book &film are in the comments below! At the end of the month I’ll share your feedback in a blog post so start reading and watching!

BANNED: foie gras will be illegal in california on july 1

BANNED: foie gras will be illegal in california on july 1

California has become the first state to ban foie gras the delicacy made from fatty duck or goose liver. As most of you probably know the process for making foie gras involves grossly overfeeding geese through a funnel so their livers enlarge to such a degree they can’t even walk or breathe properly.

Animal rights activists have been fighting for years to ban this cruel practice. I actually worked really hard to get this law passed. I called Schwarzenegger for a month talking to his trusty team every few days for a few months…I was thrilled when he passed this! The new law which goes into effect July 1 will ban the sale and production of foie gras in California.

Help Ban Battery Cages for Hens

Although California is the first state in the US to enact such a ban other countries such as Israel the Czech Republic Denmark Finland Switzerland and the United Kingdom already have similar laws in place.

How can we get other states to get on board?

book club recap: discussing im mad as hell and im not going to eat it anymore

Here’s what some of you had to say about Christina Pirello’s latest book I’m Mad as Hell and I’m Not Going to Eat it Anymore.

“I just got done reading this book. I loved it. I really loved how it went into depth about the history of where our food has been and all the information about various additives…Great read!”

- Lilash

Check out past kind book club selections!

“I just finished reading this as well! Christina is amazing and I'm so thrilled she's nearby in Philadelphia. I plan to take one of her cooking demo classes as soon as possible. One part of the book that really hit me is when she talks about fast food versions of ‘healthy’ stuff like McDonald's oatmeal. It's full of additives and all kinds of junk. Yuck. So much better and cheaper to make it at home. This book is a great pick!”

- Angela

“This is a fantastic book. I just finished it and now it is sitting with the rest of my vegan cookbooks.  Her recipe for pistachio pesto is delicious...I've already made it twice! If you haven't gotten this book yet you don't want to miss it.”

- Wendy

I’ll be announcing our next book soon so stay tuned!
