Challenge for 2016 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy

Kuda Huraa Maldives, June 15, 2016 – The 2016 Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy line up is complete and it is one of the most star studded the unique event has seen. Joining Pipe specialists Jamie O’Brien, former Championship Tour competitor and WSL deputy commissioner Travis Logie and 2015 event champion Shane Dorian will be Taj Burrow,  Bethany Hamilton, Rob Machado and local champion Hussain ‘Iboo’ Areef.

I am so excited to have fun surfing with the boys in the Maldives pristine waves. It will be fun and interesting competing on twin and single fin boards. I am looking forward to a cruise time with my family, enjoying our time in paradise.

–Bethany Hamilton

Event co-ordinator, Mark Winson of Tropicsurf, predicts the most exciting year yet with this incredible and diverse line-up of competitors.

“There’s no guessing which way this will go, and that’s what makes it so exciting,” Winson said. “Spectators are in for an electrifying show of surfing skills.”

The 2016 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy will run from August 8-14. For more information check back at www.worldsurfleague.com or on the WSL App.

About the event: Unique in many ways, the Surfing Champions Trophy determines heat times based on age and tests skill across three divisions: single-fin, twin-fin, and thruster. Places are granted by invitation-only to six world champions in a battle for inner-circle kudos and a US$25,000 prize pot. Each heat is run with a timing handicap per competitors age; so, the older the competitor the more time they have in the water.

The event is hosted aboard Four Seasons Explorer – the Maldives’ ultimate surf vessel. Fans can get up close to the action with onboard VIP passes, while the ‘surf tour’ experience continues with shoulder-rubbing events back at Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa, which plays host to the contest’s competitors, judges and Tropicsurf partners (the pros behind Kuda Huraa’s surf operation.)

Sushi Night

The other night my brother’s families and ours got together to make homemade sushi. We had a big slab of freshly caught ahi, organic brown rice, nori, organic sliced veggies, and yummy sauces. We did our best to roll together some lopsided sushi. haha!

This health tip is more about getting together with your family/loved ones to do something out of the ordinary. It is healthy to create fun memories and have quality time with others. Enjoy some lopsided sushi!

Travel With A Reusable Water Bottle!

I cannot over emphasize the importance of staying hydrated. Especially when traveling, proper hydration helps minimize jetlag and support the immune system. To stay hydrated, it helps to have your own reusable bottle (plus it’s better on the earth)! More and more airports are placing fill up stations, like the one pictured above, which make it easy to get your water fix. So keep an eye out!

I like my Corkcicle canteen, it keeps my water or drink cold (or hot) for over 10 hours! It’s the bomb!

Whether you have a Corkcicle or your own water bottle you like to use, bring it along when you travel this summer.

3rd Place Finish | 2016 WSL Fiji Pro

Bethany Hamilton, global sporting icon and event wildcard finishes third in the WSL #FijiPro! Earning Bethany the best wildcard result in WSL competition since 2012. #GoBethany

Bethany was in sensational form at Fiji Women’s Pro, eliminating WSL Jeep Rankings’ Leader Tyler Wright (AUS) in Round 2 before charging past six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Johanne Defay (FRA) in Round 3 to earn a spot in the event’s Quarterfinals.

Hamilton unleashed clean, powerful snaps to earn a 15.47 heat score. Gilmore, with a 14.77 two-wave score, finished closely behind Hamilton. Defay earned a 7.50 to take control early in the heat, but was not able to find a second score to challenge Hamilton and Gilmore.

“Stephanie, Tyler and Carissa are three of my favorite female surfers, so it was daunting knowing I had Stephanie in my heat,” Hamilton said. “I have so much respect for everyone on Tour. I have been dreaming of surfing and competing here, so I was excited to receive a Wildcard entry into this event. I am honored that I can inspire people. I know I am in a unique position to encourage young girls to make great decisions as they grow into women and to chase their dreams. Even after losing my arm, I am still doing everything I’ve hoped I could do with my future and even more. I think I am a reminder for the young girls that they can do it if they set their mind to it.”

After winning her Quarterfinal heat against Nikki VanDyke (AUS), Bethany advanced to the Semifinals where she surfed against eventual event champion Johanne Defay. Overall an outstanding performance by Bethany, catching the attention of international media, and creating even more excitement leading up to the release of her performance surf film, Surfs Like a Girl.

The Endless Ways to Use Coconut Oil—And How To Get a Jar FREE

There’s a really good reason why everyone is talking about coconut oil these days. From chefs and foodies to estheticians and beauty experts, its hard to ignore the buzz about this incredible ingredient.

Coconut Oil is a product I use EVERY DAY — no joke!

I personally LOVE using coconut oil in my food and cooking. It has a slight coconut flavor that some don’t love, but to me its the buttery flavor that tantalizes my taste buds. I shared in previous health tips about using it to pop popcorn, for oil pulling (which is a natural way to clean and detoxify teeth and gums), to make a baked apple dessert, gluten free waffles, and as a hair mask, but there are so many more ways I have incorporated coconut oil into my everyday life.

If you’re not a fan of the flavor, I know at least nine other ways to use it. The beauty benefits alone will earn it a new spot in your medicine cabinet.

Because coconut oil is ultra moisturizing, it’s perfect for everything from DIY body scrubs to hair masks.  Rub a dollop of it on your skin to see what I mean. It’ll leave you feeling baby soft, and it’s all natural, unlike a lot of lotions out there.

It’s easy to say I LOVE coconut oil. Check out a few of the ways we’ve incorporated it into our daily routine:
● In a stir fry or quick sauté
● As a butter substitute in baking (see my Mango Muffin Recipe)
● To make raw chocolate bars
● In a supercharged smoothie
● In bulletproof coffee
● Spread on toast
● As a moisturizer
● As a leave-in conditioner
● As lip balm
● To soothe itchy skin or bug bites
● As a natural treatment for lice
● To relieve the pain of a sore throat
● In a DIY body butter
● As a makeup remover
● As a baby diaper-rash treatment and prevention

Before you run out to the store to grab a jar, make sure you’re getting only the good stuff. Specifically, you want to make sure coconut oil is organic, ethically sourced, and virgin—like Thrive Market’s. The online shopping site is offering every new member a FREE jar of high quality organic virgin coconut oil. Claim your FREE gift today before they’re gone!

3rd Annual Bethany and Alana Keiki Classic

Community Surf Contest Brings Some Fun and Games to the Next Generation of Surfers

Bethany Hamilton and Alana Blanchard, two of the most influential female surfers in the world, in partnership with Rip Curl and Hanalei Surf Company, hosted the third annual Bethany and Alana Keiki Classic on Sunday, April 17th at their home break of Pine Trees, Hanalei, Kauai.  The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 16th, but due to impending swell the event was moved to Sunday for safety reasons. The surf contest brought out the local community for an exciting day of surfing, beach games and the opportunity to interact with Bethany and Alana.

It was a rainy day at Pine Trees with gusty winds and challenging conditions. Unfortunately, due to the conditions the 10 and under boys and girls were not able to surf; instead the kids participated in competitive beach games. The boys 11-14 surfed two heats and a final and the girls 11-14 surfed one heat and a final. The competitors were judged on their best wave of the heat to advance to the finals. The goal of the surf contest was to create a relaxed, fun environment for the kids to practice their skills and compete against their friends and peers.

Bethany’s husband Adam, along with Ward Niccore from Young Life Hawaii, ran beach games for the kids in-between heats; both Bethany and Alana joined in on the fun.

I love being able to get to know the youth of Kauai and see the up and coming talent here at the Keiki contest. It is really important to me to give back, so I am stoked it has become an annual event.

–Bethany Hamilton

For Bethany, the event is an opportunity to positively impact the local youth and promote education, which is why she hosted the Keiki Classic Essay Challenge. Competitors had the option to submit an essay the day of the event describing how drugs and alcohol can take you away from your passions and dreams. Bethany received some great submissions for her essay contest. She chose two winners, who received Rip Curl Maui Mini watches, but was extremely impressed with all of the entries. The winners, Sydney Maczka and Kahlil Shockley, wowed the crowd as they read their powerful essays aloud during the award ceremony.

A special thank you to Hanalei Surf for helping put on such a great community event! Also, thank you to all of the companies who contributed prizing to stoke all the kids out – Rip Curl, GoPro, FlexFit, Sticky Bumps, Cobian, SPY, Futures Fins, SMS Audio, Crush, Pink’s Creamerie and Ormco. Thank you to Jamba Juice Hawaii for being on site providing free smoothies to all event participants and attendees.

RECIPE: Baked Apples

We made this for a birthday party dessert, and everyone LOVED it!! Enjoy!

Baked Apples

– 6 Apples (organic if possible)

– 1/4 cup walnuts, pecans, or almonds

– 1/4 cup Butter (can substitute w/Coconut Oil)

– 1/4 cup natural brown sugar (or better yet, sub. w/ agave, honey or maple syrup)

– 1/4 cup currants or raisins

Core the apples – making lots of room in the center for the stuffing. Mix all of the other ingredients in a small bowl, until well incorporated.

Stuff the center of each apple with the raisin nut mixture, pile it high on top until all of the raisin nut mixture is used.

Butter (or oil) a rectangular baking dish, and pour 1/2 cup of pure water at the bottom of the pan.

Place the apples in the pan. Bake for approx. 1 hour – basting with the water every 20 minutes or so.

Each apple can be cut in half to serve 2.
