Bethany Welcomed To Team Tige
Tige Boats is excited to welcome the inspirational Bethany Hamilton to the Tige family! Known as one of the world’s most brave women and a world ranked surfer, Bethany will now be adding the Tige wave to her surfing.
“Surfing is my passion, so taking it behind a boat is going to be a fun adventure,” stated Bethany. “I’m excited to be a part of the Tige family and represent the brand!”
Surfing behind Tige Boats is the latest trend to hit lakes around the world. To learn more about wakesurfing with Tige, check out Pro Surfer and TeamTige athlete Josh Kerr surfing the endless wave here.
At the age of thirteen, Bethany lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark, which seemed to end her career as a rising surf star. One month after the attack, Bethany returned to the water and within 2 years had won her first National title. Bethany’s legend status continued to rise at the 2016 Fiji Women’s Pro as she beat out the top world ranked women.
“Bethany is an icon and role model,” stated Charlie Pigeon, Founder and CEO of Tige Boats. “Her story has inspired millions of people around the world. Bethany is the perfect fit for Tige and our culture.”
Bethany Hamilton was the inspiration behind the autobiography and movie SOUL SURFER– starring Carrie Underwood, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, and AnnaSophia Robb. Her latest project, BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE, a surf film, will showcase her as one of the best women surfers in the world, is set to release in Summer 2017.
With her new partnership with Tige, Bethany can do what she loves with her friends and family along for the ride.

Homemade Baby Food
All Natural Vegetable & Sweet Potato Baby Food Puree
Since becoming parents, Adam and I enjoy making food for our son, Tobias. So many of the on-the-go baby food purees on the market contain fruit, which adds extra sugar that our son’s growing body does not need.
Making your own baby food is so easy!
STEP 1: Chop and Steam 2 Carrots, 2 Zucchini, and 1 Sweet Potato*
STEP 2: Blend with 1/2 cup Bone Broth
Leftovers can be preserved in the refrigerator or freezer in reusable baby food pouches or containers.
*It’s so easy to mix this recipe up with whatever veggies you have on hand. As always, we recommend choosing fresh, organic produce.
This is a recipe suitable for a 9-18 month old child. And it can be easily modified based on age and personal preferences.

Family Night Tip: The Cell Phone Bowl
“To say that young people are in love with their smartphones would be an understatement: It’s more like they’re obsessed, confirms a new study out by Zogby Analytics.” — USA Today.
Sadly, when I look at the world around me, I have to agree that it’s true. This article by RawHide is so revealing of the issue. But it doesn’t have to be the case for all of us. As a young person in our culture it is possible, and highly valuable, to recognize this problem and begin to set limits for yourself, encouraging your family and friends to do the same.
My family and I have been trying to prioritize our time together by having a “cell phone bowl” where we can all put our devices when we are together.
The results we’ve seen — we interact, we laugh together, we have meaningful conversations, we love each other.
Naturally, we must bust out a smartphone on occasion to take pictures. But for the most part, the rule is: Leave your phone in the bowl. The whole time you’re there. And especially while at the dinner table.
Try it at your next family night! I dare you.

Day 1 Swatch Womens Pro
Bethany Gives Tyler a Run for Her Money (Again)
In a near-repeat of their Fiji battle, the Hawaiian Bethany Hamilton had the Jeep leader, Tyler Wright, on the ropes at Trestles, with Nikki Van Dijk taking the win. – WSL
It was a rough start to Round 1, Heat 3 at Day 1 of the WSL Swatch Women’s Pro today, with a bit of a lull for the first ten minutes of the heat. Making the three competitors a little antsy down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, CA. Bethany held the lead after a few solid scores, but then lost it when Nikki Van Dijk turned out a good scoring ride near the end of the heat. Her final wave was so close but not quite enough to move her back to the lead.
She will move on to Round 2 where she has another matchup against current World #1 Tyler Wright.
The Swatch Women’s Pro will stream live on the WSL website and app September 7th-18th and runs in conjunction with the Hurley Pro at Trestles.

Swatch Womens Pro Wildcard
Bethany Hamilton has been awarded the wildcard for the Swatch Women’s Pro for the second consecutive year. [picture above is her ripping at Trestles before the 2015 event]. This will mark her seventh appearance in a Championship Tour event and her second this season.
The Hawaiian previously caused a series of upsets at the Fiji Women’s Pro earlier this year when she blazed through the draw, eliminating world No. 1 Tyler Wright and defeating six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore on her way to the Semifinals.
Bethany will face Australians Tyler Wright and Nikki Van Dijk in Round 1 of competition.
“Lower Trestles is a really special place – the perfect platform to showcase women’s surfing,” said WSL Women’s Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer. “Bethany is an extremely talented surfer and we are very excited to have her back at the Swatch Women’s Pro. After her incredible performance in Fiji, which is the best we’ve seen from a wildcard in some time, she has earned another opportunity to compete alongside the world’s best.”
The Swatch Women’s Pro will stream live on the WSL website and app September 7th-18th and runs in conjunction with the Hurley Pro at Trestles, event No. 8 on the men’s CT.

Standout at Surfing Champions Trophy
Greeted by flawless 3-foot waves at the right-hand reef break of Sultans, Bethany and her fellow competitors arrived on the beautiful Island of Kuda Huraa and hit the water for the first time in preparation for Day 1 of the 2016 Four Season Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy.
On her second time to the Maldives, as the lone female competitor, Bethany enjoyed the challenge of riding the different equipment required for the unique format of the Champions Trophy, which involves surfers competing on single-fins, twin-fins and thrusters over three separate competition days.
“My first surf was so fun – the conditions were perfect,” Hamilton said. “It’s been fun trying to figure out the different equipment and Sultans really is a perfect wave for trying different boards. It’s going to be really cool surfing with all these guys, I can’t wait.”

Her competitors included the legends of the sport: Taj Burrow (AUS), the eventual event champion; Rob Machado; Travis Logie; Shane Dorian, and Jamie O’Brien, along with local goofy-foot ripper Hussain ‘Iboo’ Areef.
“It’s been really cool to surf with Bethany; she is such an inspiration. I’m just loving it here,” said O’Brien.
Bethany was a standout performer on the twin fin. With only a couple of days practice under he belt on the unique craft, the Hawaiian goofyfoot looked like she was on a thruster going vertical turn after turn. It was not enough to progress to the semifinals though.

“This was my first time surfing a twin fin,” Bethany said. “It’s really fun. I like how you really have to draw out your turns. Surfing with all of these guys is so amazing. It’s just fun to be in the water with them. It gets me excited to surf and pushes me. I’m not in it to take them down, but it would be cool to make a heat against them.”
On the event layday, Bethany and Adam enjoyed not only the waves, but some of the other activities on offer at the Four Seasons Maldives Kuda Huraa.

Bethany Hamilton has settled into Maldivian life nicely
The thruster division rounded out the competition on the final day. Hands down the most impressive performance went to Bethany Hamilton of Hawaii. In the unique format, Hamilton was the only competing female. Hamilton posted an excellent 8.63 and had her male opponents on the ropes. The inspirational goofy-foot was unable to find a back-up score and finished 6th overall at the event.
“That wave was so perfect – one of the ones you really look for,” Hamilton said. “It’s been so good to be here with my family and surfing with the guys. Seeing Rob and his style is just amazing. It’s been a really awesome event.”
“This has been unreal,” Machado said. “That heat was sick, Bethany blew me away, her surfing is incredible. Everyone at this contest rips so hard, once you’re off tour it’s rare to be around people who surf at this level, it’s so cool to see, especially making everyone surf single and twin fin boards. I came to the Maldives years ago and it was a real mission getting around to waves but this trip has been amazing; Kuda Huraa is so close to all these waves it’s been so incredible.”
“This is one of the best events I have ever competed in,” Logie said. “The vibe is really cool and the waves have been pumping the whole time. …I think Bethany Hamilton is the best surfer in the world, I’ve always had respect for her but seeing her surf this week was incredible.”

Mana Bars
Mana is the Hawaiian word for “power.” I find mana in my life from my faith and self-confidence. My faith gives me assurance to face anything that life throws at me. When I’m feeling confident in that, I have a lot of mana to take on the day.
This nut, seed, chocolate energy bar is one of me and Adam’s go-to homemade snacks. We often bring it to potlucks or family dinners as a dessert!
You will need a food processor and the following ingredients:
2 cups raw almonds
1/2 cup ground flaxseeds
1/2 cup currants, dates, and raisins
1/2 cup shredded coconut
Process until coarsely ground
1/2 cup unsalted almond butter
3 TBS honey
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
1/2 tsp sea salt
Pulse into a coarse paste
Pour and press down into 8×16 inch pan
4 oz dark chocolate
Melt on double boiler
Pour into pan and spread over the nut and seed mixture.
Refrigerate for 30 mins. This can also be frozen in a freezer safe container.
Cut into squares, serve and enjoy!!

How Baby Wearing Keeps Me Doing What I Love
Since becoming a mother I have joined a core- and dare I say, fanatical- group of babywearers! That’s why I’m stoked to be partnering with Baby Tula to release a signature ‘Soul Surfer’ baby carrier design. Available through my Shop. Here’s a bit of the story of our collaboration:
After my son, Tobias, was born, I went out of my way to “wear” him. A Baby Tula carrier was the perfect way to do that! I looked at his first 3 months as the 4th trimester, and made it a point to have lots of skin to skin contact and keep him bundled. It was a beautiful time to bond as child and parent, allowing him to grow in trust, and feel safe in his new environment. My husband, Adam, even wore Tobias a lot! We would take turns. In his first 3 months Tobias was a bit colicky, so we’d do nighttime walks up and down our driveway using the carrier, and it worked. It was a good way to keep him upright after feeds.
Out in public, I found wearing him would keep people’s hands off him more, and I liked that. There’s a time and a place to allow people to touch your new baby, and for me the store, the airport, etc was not that place.
As my son grew, especially during the 4-10 month age but even now as a toddler, he would get really clingy in the evenings. All moms know that babies get needy! It is a beautiful, healthy thing for a young child to want mom. But it often happens at times where mom needs to get stuff done, cook dinner, or spend time with her man. The winning solution for me has been strapping on my Tula carrier. I can comfort and cuddle my son while continuing to do what I need and love to do. Adam and I would go on sunset strolls to spend time together, and Tobias was there, but he was so content that it felt like quality husband/wife time. It was nice to have my hand free to hold my hubby’s!
On top of all this, as an amputee with one arm wearing my baby allows me to have my hand free to use for whatever I need to do!
The design for my ‘Soul Surfer’ signature carrier was a collaboration with Tula’s design team to create a pattern that expressed my passion for surfing. Being an ocean lover, I wanted my carrier to be water inspired. I also love the color blue! Soul Surfer has a modern abstract pattern of blue ocean waves and navy blue canvas to create a carrier that has a cool beach vibe. Accent embroidery appears on the waistband that includes my signature logo and the Baby Tula motto which even resonates with my story: ‘Keep Doing What You Love.’
When tough times come, it’s a beautiful thing to keep doing what you love. It can be a way to heal and overcome. I’ve had the opportunity to continue my surf career following childbirth. Surfing is something I will always love to do, but even more, I love coming home to my husband and son.
