jubilantics:

Books won’t stay banned. They won’t burn. Ideas won’t go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only sure weapon against bad ideas is better ideas. — Alfred Whitney Griswald

Banned Books Mugshots: Alaska Young (Looking for Alaska), Janie Crawford (Their Eyes Were Watching God), Holden Caulfield (The Catcher in the Rye), Harry Potter (Harry Potter), and Hester Prynne (The Scarlet Letter).

““A very famous writer once said, ‘A book is like a mirror. If a fool looks in, you can’t expect a genius to look out.’ People tend to find in books what they want to find. And I think my books are very moral. I know they have absolutely nothing to do with what this lady is writing about, so I’m afraid I can’t give her much help there.””

Mr. Gruff is my new favorite.

Honestly, if this is a real pamphlet, I can’t help but laugh as it is so horrifyingly outrageous: “If you find an Atheist in your neighborhood TELL A PARENT OR PASTOR RIGHT AWAY.”

God help us all. ;)

“Children’s and YA books are about being brave and kind, about learning wisdom and love, about that journey into and through maturity that we all keep starting, and starting again, no matter how old we get. I think that’s why so many adults read YA: we’re never done coming of age.”

"On September 11, 2001, we were in Southern California saying goodbye to my husband’s dear..."

“On September 11, 2001, we were in Southern California saying goodbye to my husband’s dear grandfather who was dying, had left and were visiting my grandparents. That night we got the phone call that his grandfather had passed away. With heavy hearts we went to bed and were woken by my grandfather his face red, his eyes heavy with the words, “We’re under attack.” We sat together, the four of us, two WWII generation and two 20-somethings, and watched the news all day long. Then we attended a funeral. My husband always says he was so glad his grandfather, who escaped a Nazi prison camp in Holland and fled to America to raise his family, didn’t live to see the towers fall. My grandfather, who was a Colonel in WWII, had. For us, this was the first time witnessing violence of this kind on American soil, for others around the world, it’s a daily occurrence. Today I’m thinking of everyone harmed by war and violence, on our soil and beyond. To honor those lost and still losing, choosing kindness and tolerance and understanding whenever possible isn’t going to fix everything, but it’s a start.”
