This is Coy Mathis, a transgender 6 year old living in Colorado. It just so happens that my brother is in her class at Eagleside Elementary School in Fountain, Colorado. When I asked my brother how he felt about Coy he said, “She’s got really cool hair and we play on the slides at recess.” I asked what he thought about Coy’s decision to be a girl and he said, “She is a girl. She just got the wrong body on accident.” How is a 6 year old more understanding and accepting of her than many of the adults at Eagleside Elementary?
Love this child’s wise and kind commentary. We have a child like this in our neighborhood, too. Since he was a toddler, he wore princess dresses and refused to wear pants. He wears a swimsuit made for a little girl, and when he splashes around in the pool, refers to himself as a “she”. His parents are supportive of his dressing choice, but continue to refer to s/he as a “he”. Who knows what I would do in their shoes. Consider it a phase? Boldly embrace it? But it is remarkable the way kids accept things adults seen to have such a hard time wrapping collective heads around.

My son, who is generally a reluctant reader, really loves the book Dragon Puncher by James Kochalka. And when I say “love”, I mean the white hot laser focus passion that only a kid on the Autism Spectrum seems able to achieve.
Another thing my son is reluctant to do is write. He’s worked hard with occupational therapists to overcome some fairly intense fine motor skill delays, and after years of effort, is able to write legibly. But he doesn’t like to do it. Ever.
So I was surprised (and thrilled) when he said he wanted to write a letter to the author of Dagon Puncher. He did the whole thing himself, only asking for a bit of help with spelling, an envelope, and a stamp. Then we mailed it off. And more or less forgot about it.
But when we got back from Spring Break vacation the other day, there was a reply letter waiting for him with a hand-drawn picture, stickers, and a fun little map for Kochalka’s other series, Johnny Boo. Now, my son is not given to a lot of outward display of enthusiasm, but if you look in that second picture, you can see his little secret smirk, which is what he does when he’s so excited about something that he can’t stop himself from smiling at least just a little. For those of you unfamiliar with Dragon Puncher, the hero’s weapon of choice is a wooden spoon called “Spoony”. That night, my son took a wooden spoon to bed with him. For me, that says it all.
I don’t know if this is one of those things that sticks with him forever. I hope so. But I tell you what, it’s sticking with me. As a father and as an author. Every time I’m tempted to rush through fan correspondence, I’m going to think of the moment my son opened the letter from his favorite author.

Writing novels and mask making!
Have you ever started a project thinking, “Oh, this will be simple!” and then hours later covered in plaster dust say to yourself, “What in the world was I thinking?” Well. If you write novels or engage in art projects with preschoolers you know exactly what I’m talking about.
My daughter is on spring break, so we decided to make these simple masks. I thought sure, splotch some paint, glue some feathers, sprinkle some glitter and voila! Beautiful masks! Let’s run around and roar like eerie lions!
Not so much.
We’re talking strips of plaster. Layers. Sticky glue. Sitting overnight. Waiting. Whining. More waiting. When is it time for the glitter?
No projects are as simple as we think they are going to be. Writing novels are no exception. Just when I think a book is going to be easier than the last, I’m hit with a whole new wave of challenges. So cheers to all the artists out there whether your 4 years old or 40.
Keep up the awesome work—it’s worth it in the end. :)

bonnie bennett + 4.17 “because the night”
Not gonna lie, Bonnie’s white eyes freaked me right the hell outta bed.
I have a similar scene in the third installment of my Spellspinners Series, and after I saw this bit in The Vampire Diaries I was like HEIDI WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU? WHITE EYES SO GROSS AND JUST WRONG! (But also so frighteningly witchy and horror-story awesome!)
All in all a really fun ep! Loved the VampGirls ganging up on Damon and the menage a trois punk-club snackfest.
What was your favorite part?
