Camping Weekend in the Catskills:

After a wet start to our trip, my friend and I had a fantastic weekend camping in the western Catskills.  We stayed at Little Pond State Campground just outside of Livingstone Manor, NY.  What a fantastic place.  Beautiful large sites, very private, large lake to fish for bass and a nice boat rental.  Lots of black bear warnings, but we made it out alive!

On Saturday we hiked the Dry Brook Ridge Trail to the top of Balsom Lake Mountain.  At 3730 feet, it's the highest peak in the western Catskills (and boy did it feel like it as we climbed to the top).  At the summit we met a nice couple that volunteer to oversee the cabin and fire tower on the mountain.  The woman's father had been a state employee beginning in the 1940's who manned the (then in service) tower.  The view from the top was a breathtaking sight.  You could see all the way to the eastern edge of the Catskills, well beyond Slide Mountain.  Just amazing.

We finished the day fishing at Alder Lake.  On Sunday we headed into Livingston Manor to spend the day fly fishing one of the finest trout streams in America, the Beaverkill River.  I caught two wild Brook Trout right before packing it in for the day and returning to the city.  I can't wait to get up there again soon.  Just a magical weekend away from the urban grind.

happy summer solstice! hope wherever you are, you're making the most of it.

We spent Father's Day weekend in Santa Cruz, CA. I love the place for many reasons—the eclectic mix of the eccentric (See: Spiderman street performer) and the sea (view from our hotel room of a surf lesson) make it pretty obvious why.

This morning's playlist. Not sure I knew it before today, but it's a perfect fit for what I'm working on.

A funny and spot-on description of the cafe where I write

Crowded during the afternoon hours.
I always thought that I wouldn't find a better place for face-time than the first floor of my college library. I have been proven wrong.

Sightings during my work session here included:
-French exchange students
-Rich housewives with young girls toting designer handbags and leaving with their respectively caf and decaf lattes
-Entrepreneurs
-Writer and editor discussing a book*
-A couple on an awkward date where only the guy was talking
-Numerous high school students

The tight setting made sure that I did not miss a single worthy incident that went on in the shop all afternoon. There was never a dull moment and the seats were consistently filled. It was only around 5 that things started to quiet down.

Yep, that pretty much sums up my summer office. Minus the high school students who are hopefully soaking up some play time on a beach somewhere. :)

Monkey coffee

Before you get too excited, they don't have monkey-face coffee. I just liked this picture.
*I wonder if the writer was me and the "editor" was one of my critique partners. Or visa-versa. What the what?
