Pauline Rowson explains why our libraries are so important to our communities
Iowe a great deal to libraries and particularly the libraries of
Portsmouth. Without them I might never have discovered the sheer joy of
reading and ultimately have become a crime writer.
Coming from a household where money was tight I was fortunate enough to
be introduced by a friend’s mother to a small local library in
Portsmouth, the Alderman Lacey Library in Tangiers Road. There I
discovered a treasure trove of books, the sheer volume and variety of
which would have been impossible for my parents to buy, let alone
store. I devoured everything from adventure to classics and many in
between.

Successful writing tips - My six rules for writing
Writing is a tough game so to make it easier for budding writers here are my five rules to successful writing! 1. Travel by public transport as often as you can. If you’ve got a free
bus pass so much the better, you can stay on the bus all day and save
on heating bills at home. You see and meet some great characters for
novels.

What's on in October 2016
Well it's October and we're getting deeper into autumn here in England.
The sunlight has changed to that soft amber glow and the leaves on the
trees are beginning to change colour to all shades of reds and golds.
I've also been collecting conkers. Not to play with but to put in a bowl
and to admire their deep rich red mahogany.
Two of my DI Andy Horton crime novels are set in October. The second in the series, Deadly Waters and the eleventh, Shroud of Evil. Both are available in paperback and as an ebook.
The seasons and the sea are both great inspirations for me. This month
sees me putting the final touches to DI Andy Horton number fourteen
before moving on to number fifteen, while number thirteen is to be
published in February 2017. I'll also be working on final revisions to
the third in the Art Marvik marine crime series.
