What makes Pauline Rowson's crime novels different - marine mystery country - a fascination with the sea

Sailing out of Portsmouth Harbour We
all know that location is an important factor when choosing where to
live, it is also equally important in choosing the setting for a crime
novel. There are many great settings for crime novels in the UK from
gritty Glasgow to captivating Cornwall and of course the wonderful
diversity of settings in countries around the World. There is also the
fictional setting.

For me though there is marine mystery country, the location for my crime
novels, which happens to be a real place and that is Portsmouth and the
Solent on the South Coast of England. Here my sailing detective, the
flawed and rugged  DI Andy Horton, pits his wits against the criminal
classes, which takes him, and others in the team, into the harbours and
marinas around Portsmouth, Langstone, Chichester, and the Isle of Wight.

Dangerous Cargo, the second in the Art Marvik series, delivers a more deadly cargo than bananas

Pauline Rowson with Dangerous Cargo, picture Malcolm Wells. Geest Line's MV Benguela Stream at Portsmouth International Port Had
great fun on the photo shoot for the launch of Dangerous Cargo thanks
to the Portsmouth International Port, MMD Shipping Services and the
Geest Line.

What better place to launch a new crime novel with the title
Dangerous Cargo than in front of  a cargo ship at Portsmouth
International Port, although the cargo in the second in the marine based
crime series featuring Art Marvik is of a far more deadly nature than
bananas transported on the Geest Line's MV
Benguela Stream, a purpose-built Dutch-registered 150m vessel for the ocean transport of
perishable cargo.

A flavour of Art Marvik's first mission for NIMS ahead of his second in Dangerous Cargo

Former Royal Marine Commando, Art Marvik, now working undercover for the
UK's National Intelligence Marine Squad, (NIMS) is about to embark on
his second mission in Dangerous Cargo,
published by Severn House in the UK on 31 May 2016.  I thought  as a
prequel you might like a flavour of his first mission for NIMS in Silent Running  which is available in paperback and as an ebook.

Silent Running - An Art Marvik Marine Crime Novel by Pauline Rowson
Adrift after leaving the marines, Marvik finds
himself being used as bait to catch a ruthless killer whose slaying
spree spans the decades.
It's a mission that will put all his skills and training to the test- a dangerous assignment that could cost him his life

Pauline Rowson on the attraction of writing crime novels

This video was shot at CSI Portsmouth 2012 at which I appeared with
crime authors, Stephen Booth, Ann Cleeves and Matt Hilton.  It was great
fun and I think the audience enjoyed it as much as we did.

In this video I'm talking about what attracts me to crime novels, crime
writing, characters, psychology, point of view and writing style.

Hope you enjoy the short excerpt.

What makes the crime genre is so popular

Fatal Catch a DI Andy Horton Mystery by Pauline Rowson Crime fiction is one of the best selling genres and the most borrowed
from public libraries. So what is it that makes crime fiction so
popular?  Well apart from being a cracking good read, in crime fiction
we know that generally speaking justice will be done and the case will
be resolved and that doesn’t always happen in real life.

In crime fiction the villain either gets caught or gets his/her
comeuppance but in real life the evil and manipulative, the guilty can
get
away with it as in the case of the unsolved murder in my own family in
1959 that of my great aunt, Martha Giles.

Crime fiction can give us a resolution. It can also give us an insight into what makes people tick.

Read more on what makes the crime genre so popular.
